Moltmann and Kaufman are environmental theologians with different theological commitments. Moltmann (b. 1926) is a theological realist and theologian of radical environmental hope, and Kaufman (1925-2011), was a theological constructivist and theologian of radical environmental responsibility. I argue a tension within environmental theology between hope and responsibility can be explored through a comparison of the manner in which these thinkers--one realist, one constructivist-- revised their positions on anthropology, eschatology and task of theology itself on the basis of their developing environmental consciousness. This comparison reveals that matters of human situatedness, universal telos and understandings of God have foundational significance for attempts to construct a theological response to the environmental crisis. Moltmann and Kaufman’s positions on these foundational issues were informed by the different answers that they gave to certain fundamental questions within systematic theology, namely, what constitutes knowledge of God, the identity of God and what difference God makes in the world. I contend that the centrality of these questions to the construction of these two disparate thinkers’ environmental theologies is exemplary of environmental theology as a whole. That is to say, these systematic issues are rarely highlighted within environmental theology and yet, I argue, they are fundamental and crucial. These thinkers, as we shall see, have radically different views on what constitutes theology. However, they are united in their conviction that theology contains a wealth of resources that can aid humanity in reconstructing their relationship with the environment. Nonetheless, they are exemplars of opposing approaches to environmental theology. Moltmann is a theological realist whose environmental theology is based upon the radical hope given to humanity in Christ. Kaufman, by contrast, is a theological constructivist whose environmental theology is based on radical human responsibility. They offer us differing accounts of the content of anthropology, eschatology and God’s relationship with the world within the context of environmental crisis.

Giving a presidential address is an awesome task, starting with the choice of topic. In the current ecclesial climate I was tempted to focus on the situation of theology or the role of the theologian, both under duress. However, the words of David Power, this year's John Courtney Murray award winner, came to mind. To a faculty demoralized by the unjust removal of one of our colleagues, he as chair of department never ceased repeating, "The best offense is to keep on theologizing." Subvert repression by moving ahead. This is not to say that taking a stand on internal matters is not occasionally necessary. It is. But while theologians have life and breath we must keep on pressing forward, practicing our craft, seeking understanding of the faith for the sake of our own and coming generations. Guided by that wisdom, I have chosen to address the Catholic Theological Society of America on a theological issue that quite literally is coming to be a matter of life or death, namely, the natural world. INTRODUCTION As the twenty-first century rapidly approaches, there is a vital theme largely absent from the thinking of most North American theologians, namely, the whole world as God's good creation. There are a few notable exceptions among our members, but surveying our work as a whole would quickly make this absence clear. The Gyalwang Drukpa is distinguished by his systemic support of both Buddhist nuns and the environ- ment over the past decade, and his efforts have been recognized by the United Nations, the Government of India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and others b. Under what circumstances, if any, could the Drukpa be legitimately characterized as an ecofeminist? A conservative professor of Old Testament and homiletics, she both insists on the theological importance and value of creation and warns against worshipping the creature rather than the creator.     CHAPTER FIFTEEN CARETAKER OR CITIZEN: HANS JONAS, ALDO LEOPOLD, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF JEWISH ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS1 Lawrence Troster Hans Jonas’s last public words ended with this prophetic call: It was once religion which told us that we are all sinners, because of original sin. It is now the ecology of our planet which pronounces us all to be sinners because of the excessive exploits of human inventiveness. It was once religion which threatened us with a last judgment at the end of days. It is now our tortured planet which predicts the arrival of such a day without any heavenly intervention. The latest revelation—from no Mount Sinai, from no Mount of the Sermon, from no Bo (tree of Buddha)—is the outcry of mute things themselves that we must heed by curbing our powers over creation, lest we perish together on a wasteland of what was creation.2 I fi rst encountered the work of Hans Jonas twenty years ago when I read “The Concept of God After Auschwitz.”3 At the time, I did not fully appreciate Jonas’s radical theology. Environmental problems caused by human hands, such as : landslides, floods, drought, pollution and etc are evidence that our environment is really in critical condition. Therefore, as human who directly interacts with environment has moral responsibility to preserve and maintain environmental quality. Human is center and the base of the entire environmental damage. And it happened because the patterns of human behavior itself is not sensitive to the environment, therefore, to solve environmental problems not only make regulation and sanctions but also develop the mental character leads to morality as the foundation to look at nature as an integral part of the human. Religion is the answer to open its followers’ awareness to the importance of protecting the environment, through the mechanism of religious texts reading (exegesis). Eco-theology is containing universal principles in maintaining and caring the earth. In Eco-theology there are spiritual dimension, faith, worldview, ethics, morality and religion, their combination is hoped able to drive a more understanding to human beings about how he should locate the position in the universe related to his interaction with environment and other creatures, by this future of earth will be better.
