November 2007 The Subfamilies Eulophinae, Entedoninae and Tetrastichinae in Iran, with description of new species (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) Zoya YEFREMOVA, Ebrahim EBRAHIMI & Ekaterina YEGORENKOVA Abstract This paper reflects the current degree of research of Eulophidae and their hosts in Iran. A list of the species from Iran belonging to the subfamilies Eulophinae, Entedoninae and Tetrastichinae is presented. In the present work 47 species from 22 genera are recorded from Iran. Two species (Cirrospilus scapus sp. nov. and Aprostocetus persicus sp. nov.) are described as new. A list of 45 host-parasitoid associations in Iran and keys to Iranian species of three genera (Cirrospilus, Diglyphus and Aprostocetus) are included. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel zeigt den derzeitigen Untersuchungsstand an eulophiden Wespen und ihrer Wirte im Iran. Eine Liste der für den Iran festgestellten Arten der Unterfamilien Eu- lophinae, Entedoninae und Tetrastichinae wird präsentiert. Mit vorliegender Arbeit werden 47 Arten in 22 Gattungen aus dem Iran nachgewiesen. Zwei neue Arten (Cirrospilus sca- pus sp. nov. und Aprostocetus persicus sp. nov.) werden beschrieben. Eine Liste von 45 Wirts- und Parasitoid-Beziehungen im Iran und ein Schlüssel für 3 Gattungen (Cirro- spilus, Diglyphus und Aprostocetus) sind in der Arbeit enthalten. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract – Exeristes roborator (Fabricius, 1793) is usually known as the parasitoid of lepidopteran pupae, but was also recorded as the parasitoid of diff erent Cynipidae species in the southern parts of Europe and parts of Middle East. In samples of Diplolepis rosae (Linnaeus, 1758) and D. mayri (Schlechtendal, 1876) galls collected in the eastern Carpathian Basin aft er 2010 E. roborator ap- peared in large numbers compared to those collected before 2010, when the species was not present in the gall communities. Here we report the diff erential presence of Exeristes roborator in the two rose gall species, which points out the host shift of the ichneumonid parasitoid spreading towards north. With 3 fi gures. Key words – Parasite ecology, host preference, host shift , Cynipidae INTRODUCTION Exeristes roborator (Fabricius, 1793) is a polyphagous ectoparasitoid of the family Ichneumonidae and is widely distributed throughout Europe (Baker & Jones 1934). Heredity 81 (1998) 270–274 Received 5 September 1997, accepted 16 February 1998 Distribution of Wolbachia among the guild associated with the parthenogenetic gall wasp Diplolepis rosae MENNO SCHILTHUIZEN* & RICHARD STOUTHAMER Department of Entomology, Wageningen Agricultural University, PO Box 8031, NL-6700 EH Wageningen, The Netherlands Symbionts of the genus Wolbachia, which cause reproductive alterations in insects, are suspec- ted to pass regularly from one host lineage to another. One possible route for such ‘horizontal transmission’ is via parasitization. Here, we study this hypothesis in a complex guild of special- ized parasitoids and inquilines, associated with the parthenogenetic, Wolbachia-infected gall wasp Diplolepis rosae. Diplolepis rosae galls (‘bedeguar galls’) were collected at three localities in The Netherlands and Germany. Specimens of most guild members were obtained. Using molecular techniques, the presence of Wolbachia was detected in five members of the assem- blage. Three of these, Torymus bedeguaris, Habrocytus bedeguaris and D. rosae carried a Wolba- chia belonging to the same subgroup (type I). A phylogenetic analysis was performed on DNA sequences from the FtsZ gene from these three Wolbachias. The analysis showed that the three strains do not cluster closely together, which indicates that the parasitoids have not acquired their Wolbachia from their host. We could not detect host-to-parasitoid transmission in this assemblage (where interactions are both specific, frequent, and possibly ancient). These species are distributed globally and in Europe some are especially common and are founder organisms of biological communi- ties composed of different insects. However, the ecological niches of these species have not been studied in detail. We modelled the potential distributions of these species using the locations of the galls of the four most abundant species of Diplolepis on the Iberian Peninsula (Diplolepis mayri, Diplolepis rosae, Diplolepis eglanteriae and Diplolepis nervosa, the galls of latter two are in- distinguishable) using four different algorithms and identifi ed the resulting consensus for the species. The galls support species-rich, closed communities of inquilines and parasitoids that have become a model system in community ecology. We review recent advances in the ecology of oak cynipids, with particular emphasis on life cycle characteristics and the dynamics of the interactions between host plants, gall wasps, and natural enemies. We assess the importance of gall traits in structuring oak cynipid communities and summarize the evidence for bottom-up and top-down effects across trophic levels. -

Box 14515/775, Tehran – Iran; [email protected] Preface The Ichneumonidae is one of the most species rich families of all organisms with an estimated 60000 species in the world (Townes, 1969). Even so, many authorities regard this figure as an underestimate! (Gauld, 1991). An estimated 12100 species of Ichneumonidae occur in the Afrotropical region (Africa south of the Sahara and including Madagascar) (Townes & Townes, 1973), of which only 1927 have been described (Yu, 1998). This means that roughly 16% of the afrotropical ichneumonids are known to science! These species comprise 338 genera. The family Ichneumonidae is currently split into 37 subfamilies (including, Acaenitinae; Adelognathinae; Agriotypinae; Alomyinae; Anomaloninae; Banchinae; Brachycyrtinae; Campopleginae; Collyrinae; Cremastinae; Cryptinae; Ctenopelmatinae; 1 Diplazontinae; Eucerotinae; Ichneumoninae; Labeninae; Lycorininae; Mesochorinae; Metopiinae; Microleptinae; Neorhacodinae; Ophioninae; Orthopelmatinae; Orthocentrinae; Oxytorinae; Paxylomatinae; Phrudinae; Phygadeuontinae; Pimplinae; Rhyssinae; Stilbopinae; Tersilochinae; Tryphoninae; Xoridinae) (Yu, 1998).
