ABATE of Georgia continues to move forward. This past month we mailed out the updated sponsor and supporter supplies to our districts for their district sponsors as well as their Spon- sor and Supporter businesses who have added their names to the list of businesses willing to help ABATE of Georgia. Next month we will be sending out additional supplies for districts to continue this effort and help get the name of ABATE in front of riders who might not have known who we were before or who might have just needed that little push to sign up with us. To help illustrate this effort, checkout the article covering it on page 47.

Our legislative survey has been reformatted after hearing from a few members who said the questions were confusing, we hope everyone will look over the new wording on page 45 and choose to either fill out and mail in the survey or fill out the online version at http:// www.abatega.org/legislativesurvey/

The swap meet has been postponed until April 6 and 7th. The swap meet committees are meet- ing and district members should expect requests from the committees to help make this event an success.

We have carried over the list of candidates for the Georgia General Assembly and the State senate make sure you and your district legislative coordinator reach out to your local candi- dates and introduce yourselves as ABATE of Georgia members.

By the time of this printing most of our districts will have held their annual elections please make sure you get your updated officer lists into the state office.

Next, after hearing from members about concerns regarding membership we have set up a new membership hotline to ensure no member gets lost in the process. You can still call or email the state membership director Heidi Stockwell directly if you wish but out new hotline will me monitored by additional volunteers to help significantly improve the time it takes to get a membership card pin or patch. Information about the new hotline can be found on page 3 of this newsletter. Heidi’s contact information can be found on page 2.

Lastly, due to problems with one of the proxy voters at the August Board of Directors, the Ex- ecutive Board has voted to invalidate the votes on the State Director and State Secretary, as a result the Executive Board has re-appointed Ned Williams as Acting State Director and Ann Turner as Acting State Secretary pending a new vote on the positions at the November 4th Board of Directors Meeting will be required.

6 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Closed Districts are a complete loss to ABATE of Georgia. Districts 10, 12 and 14 need to be reopened and made productive once again. These Districts closed for different reasons and for the most part they still have a membership base. If you have friends or family members in those areas please talk with them about reactivating the districts so we can continue with the growth we need in order to accomplish the fight for our rights. I have made an effort to contact those that have an e- mail address however a friend’s request is much more likely to have an impact in getting this done. It only requires 3 officers to open a district. One must be the District Coordinator and the other must be a Treasurer and the third can be any position. Make the phone calls and see what we can accom- plish.

9 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Chaplain’s Corner Mike Cook Ga. CMA State Coordinator

Occasionally I reminisce on the days gone by and there has been quite a few of them over the years, really too many to think about but one of the first events that I went to was the ABATE swap meet in Atlanta at the fairgrounds. It took up 3 of the buildings that are on the grounds and took most of the afternoon to go over all the items that were for sale. There were motorcycles everywhere and bikers coming and going the long afternoon. I had never seen as many bikers in one place at one time, they were everywhere. I had never been to an event that large before and was totally blown away by the amount of people that could be put in one of the build- ings. There was a tent setup outside the main building with vendors around the outside also. There was just about everything that you could put on a motorcycle and also some things that I was not sure should go on a bike. It was a fall day and the riding up was good, it was cool but not too cold that we had to ride in leathers but if I remember that was the days before leathers for me. I had a riding suit that doubled as my hunting suit and the bike I was riding at the time was not one that was friendly for a ride to Atlanta and back in a day. Even with being tired when I returned home I still remember that first time at the swap meet. I did not know anyone there with the exception of the guy I rode up with, but I enjoyed looking over stuff that I had never seen before. I walked around the parking lot looking at all the different kind of bikes dressed to express the owner’s likes and dislikes. Making the bike have the personality of the owner! Not any that I looked at were the same but each had its own personality, although black seems to be the major color of choice among bikers. We all have days that we remember that are special to us like the day we got married or maybe the first new bike we bought. For others it could be other things that happened on the day they remember most but we have something we can look back on and say that was a great day. This was just one of the days that were special to me but there was one thing that happened that I will remember till I lose my mind anyway. I remember when I first asked Jesus into my life but he was always there with me I just did not realize it. I would like to say that I have been perfect since that day but I cannot. I fail daily but regardless of what I do I know that Jesus is still with me. When we ask him into our lives he fills us with his spirit and we can start on that life long journey of becoming more like him. Each day is a new day to spend walking with a true friend. If you would like to know more talk with a member of CMA they can put you on the right path.

Let me start my saying I am the new secratary of ABATE Dist.1 so bear with me. I have been with this wonderful family for around 24 years and wha a ride it has been and will always be. Our meeting was called to order by our Sgt. of Arms Whiskers". As always, with our hand over our heart Dennis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. We sadly had many prayer request this month and Dennis led us in prayer. We had 22 folks there sending prayers and healing blessings to our loved ones. We would love to encourage more of our members and non members to join us in these meetings and find out more about what's going on in this organization and why we are still fighting for our rights to continue to have our motorcycles on the road. It is all up to us. Heidi started our meeting by asking for an update from our other officers. Jennifer read the minutes from last months meeting, Dennis says Dist. 1 still has money as usual, Jeff Gates announced we have approximately 9o members and 1 new member, Roger Gentry. Traci Malone also renewed her membership. I wonder where they are all at. Heidi announced our nominees for the new officers this year. Our officers for this year are: Heidi Stockwell-Dist. Coordinator. Tami Culver- Interim Legislative Director Dennis Warren- Tresurer "Whiskers"- Sgt. of Arms " Scott Davis and Andy Etheridge- Assist. Sgt. of Arms Jeff Gates- Membership Director Donna Smith- Seceratary Activities Director- Dist.1 Activities Commitee Jr. Activities Director- Jessie Stockwell Thanks to all for stepping up. We discussed The State Officers and what's happening there and heard different opinions from people. We are all gonna have to work as a team and try to stay on track with the problems at hand as motorcyclist. The following members received pins, Kenton- 15 yrs., Jackie-12 yrs., Big Al- 14 yrs., Ellen- 27yrs., Rick- 28yrs. Congrats to all of you. We disscussed the Ride for E.J., A 4 year old cancer patient who has touched so many. We actually had it today along with 43 bikes and lots and lots of folks stopping in to help. I Think it seemed to be a success. Also our 24th John Crum Memorial is coming up on the 6th of Oct. Would love to have a great turnout. This ride is one we hold dear to our hearts. John started Dist.1 28 years ago and his death was sudden, but he lives on in our hearts and in our ride each year. Our 25th Annual Poker Run will be April 13th. Time and Place to be announced. The State Swap Meet will be held on April 6th and 7th. Dennis reported that The Ga. Dept. of Transportation would be putting up signs at the danger- ous intersections. If you have knowledge of any intersection like this go on the ABABTE website and post your suggestions and it will be looked into by The Ga. Dept of Transportation. Brian Black asked that we remind everyone of our meeting place. It is at 7:30pm at Logans Roadhouse on Walnut Ave. in Dalton, Ga.We also discussed needing help setting up for the John Crum on the Thurs. before.Tents, ect....Al and Pat layed out a nice ride for us after our Memorial Service at the cemetary. Tony Culver won the 50-50 and the Membership drawing and donated both back and hopefully got him alottery ticket on the way home. Meeting was ajourned by Heidi at 9:00pm. Sorry if this newletter was a little long, but I'm just a little bit excited.

Meeting held August 27 th at Dari-Dip in Lafayette, Ga, 6:30 P.M. All reports read and seconded. Four officers present, plus 4 mem- bers and two JR. members plus one guest. Went over BOD Meeting. Talked about last rides and two future rides. `Looking forward to Swap Meet in April,'13. Plan on having some stay the weekend and volunteer their help. Took nominations for next years officers: Coordinator; Frank Chaney Co coordinator; Gene Bell Treasurer; Cathy Bell Secretary; Membership Director; Linda Chaney Activi- ties Director; Frank Chaney Sgt. At Arms; David Byers Asst. Sgt. At Arms; Wendell Hamilton Web Master; Gene Bell JR. Abate Director; Charlotte Hamilton John Conyers declined the Act. Dir. Position as he has many irons in the fire at work and with the local HOG Group. Liesa Lynn is thinking about taking the Secretary position, will let us know by next meeting. Our member participation has fallen off because of job hours being changed and the economy in general. I'll sure be glad if things ever get back to normal. This is my own personal observation of the last BOD Meeting. I believe that if Ned is given the time and cooperation from ALL members of our organization, he will do a fine job. We are always talking about getting the younger riders into ABATE, but when one comes in and is willing to do a job we bitch about it. I, for one, have never liked change and at times it has cost me dearly. Lets get away from the stereotype of “OLD FAT, BEER DRINKING WHITE GUYS” and let the younger guys and gals do the jobs they want to do. I believe we learned a valuable lesson from the last group of officers, in more ways than one. Until next time, enjoy your family, your life and your hobbies. Sgt. Baldy, aka, Frank Chaney temporary fill in for Secretary

District 4 East 9/5/12 The September meeting took place on Wednesday, 9/5/12 at Confetti’s in Norcross GA. 7pm - Pledge of Allegiance followed by a Prayer 10 Attendees

Treasury report – We have some money in the bank and insurance payments are up to date thru September 2012.

26 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News Membership report – We discussed the viability of issuing membership cards thru the district until issues with the state membership are resolved. Cards would be issued locally and signed by both the membership director and district coordinator. The membership dues would be deposited in the state account. We feel that this would help to expedite processing the membership. Looks like there are people joining but not receiving pins, patches and newsletters. We also discussed issuing a renewal notification for members that are 30, 60 90 days away from expiration. We currently have 64 members in District 4 East.

Legislative report – Page 10 of the September newsletter lists the representatives. Determine which ones support your area and be prepared to talk with them. State elections are 2 months out and we need to begin to get active. Go online and fill out the legislative survey and tell our legislative director where you feel ABATE’s efforts should be spent.

Business proposition – Wayne was considering purchasing riding glasses with the ABATE logo for sale during ABATE functions. This was a considerable financial outlay and after discussing it was decided not to pursue this.

ABATE Swap Meet – This event has been tabled until late April. Committees are being formed and Ricky Jordan will be reaching out to the DC’s and committee members with additional information. Stay tuned.

Killer Creek Harley – Sunday 9/23/12 is the 13 th anniversary party for Killer Creek Harley Davison. Killer Creek usually puts on a good party and ABATE District 4 East will be hosting a table to provide information and accepting new members. If you’re around stop by and say hello. The party will run 12 5pm with a bikini contest that’ll sure to be a big draw.

Sponsors/Supporters program – This program is designed to attract business that support ABATE of GA. This will be done through door stackers, Desk top easel’s with ABATE brochures. As members of ABATE we need to be selling these to motorcycle related businesses with your district’s territory. More information on this program can be found in the September newsletter.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm. Next ABATE District 4 East meeting scheduled for Wednesday 10/3/12 at Confetti’s in Norcross GA. Come out and find out what’s happening in ABATE District 4 East.

District 4West 9 September 2012, The Timbers, Concord Road, Smyrna GA Meeting opened in the usual manner. 8 members and 1 guest shared the meeting. We do have a little bit of money in the treasury, so we will re-start the 50/50 drawings with the crowd upstairs. We discussed mov- ing the meetings upstairs, but the Falcons games are on the TVs there, and noise becomes a problem ( Not unlike the reason we left Reid’s).

September Newsletter contains many pages with the state’s rendition of the new districts, both Federal and State. We EACH of us should look at the maps CAREFULLy, to discern who our elected officials might be. And then contact them, and more especially, their boss – either the Speaker of the House of Representatives, or the President Pro-Tem of the Senate. Contact them about the things that concern us; The bill that was known as HB 161 ( Proceed on Red) died last session before it was brought to the floor of the House because 4 members of the House were not asked, face to face, to bring it up. This upcoming session, if we go to the big leaders of the houses, and request of the bosses that they put our bills out to the floor, we may have a chance to get somewhere. Cheef suggested we all sit at the machines ( either typewriters or keyboards) and contact our national elected officials about the E-15 problem that is about to hit all of us very hard. Unless we, as the biking community come together to help the AMA and the MRF fight it. That stuff is not good for our air-cooled machines, nor any other machine that must sit and idle for any length of time. It burns too hot. We also must fight the proposed 4-gallon fuel rule that is trying to be implemented. Again, the MRF and the AMA are leading the fight, but for each of us to contact our elected representatives to request they help defeat both proposals will help insure that we are heard. And help insure that two something s that are actually counter-productive to our best interests are not forced on us. ( How much fuel does your chain saw hold in one filling? Or your lawn mower? Or leaf blower. You get the idea. That 4-gal rule would affect all of those things. ) Cheef also believes that the electoral college is no longer needed by the populace of this country. It was designed to allow for white, educated land owners to vote, (as women were not considered to have enough brains to understand the process, or the reasons. Never mind the slaves; in many places, they were not even given human status). And, since we have a (mostly) literate population, the top officials of the country should be elected by all the people of the country. The new supporter stickers have arrived, and do look good. If you know an establishment that is motorcycle friendly, and think they might be approachable, call someone from either the district or from the state office to pass on the info, and the establishment could be approached. The selling point to them is that for 25 dollars a year, they will be listed not only in the print newsletter, but also on the web site. And we ask for a minimum of 16 square inches on a door for the sticker. (continued on pg 37)

District Coordinator Report: Discussion on the “state” of Abate and what we need to do to correct our image to encourage more new members and others from the community. When need to invite all motorcycle types to our community and involve ourselves in more community events. He said that just because we are a motorcycle community that we need to work with other organizations of other types to promote our responsibility as riders. His example was that like the WW Club they work with other organizations to help people understand we are not “a bad group “ and just because we have tatoo’s and chains , we are everyday people and have jobs and work hard like every- one else does. Bikers have a repetition as we all know and this is not what we are about we are a group to have fun and promote education for our communities for bikers.

29 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News District 8

I’m going to start this month with an apology for not submitting any D-8 news to the newsletter last month. I missed the deadline of August 10th. I did however find the time to attend the quarterly BOD meeting in Macon on the 11 th of August. It was a rather lengthy meeting with 17 districts / chapters participating. I’ll be brief – the Nov. swap meet has been postponed until early 2013, a vote was taken and Ned Williams is now the new State Director, a By-Law change was requested and is being worked on, and the membership problems are still a problem!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The D-8 October Regular Monthly Meeting has been MOVED to Rheinharts Oyster Bar, 3051 Washington Rd., Augusta, GA 30907. The meeting date is still the last Sunday of the month, October 28th . The meeting time has been changed to 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be immediately followed by the last D-8 Poker Run of the year, the Ghosts, Ghouls, & Goblins Poker Run. First Bike Out 4:30 p.m., Last Bike Out 5:30 p.m. See flyer in this newsletter. If you haven’t ever done a “cemetery” ride, y’all need to join us. This is a heart-stopper!!

OLD BUSINESS: The August 5 th D-8 Beat the Heat Poker Run to the Lake was a success considering the weather (rained buckets in the morning)! 31 brave folks made their way out to the Lake and those that stayed all day were treated to a gorgeous afternoon. We took in three new members – WELCOME to Mark Custer, David Perry, and Wes Townsend. We actually stole Wes from D- 5North and he’s jumped in with both feet! Thanks to all. Twenty people played poker and we also sold a few t-shirts and coozies and were able to send a small check to the state. The winners of the poker run were: 1 st place of $75.00 went to Wes Townsend who drew a straight, 2 nd place of $40.00 went to Nancy James who drew 2 pairs, and 3 rd place of $25.00 went to Wes Townsend who also drew 2 pairs. FYI – 3 rd place was added to “spread the wealth” – who knew? $55.00 was won by Diann Marum in the 50/50 draw- ing and all had a good time with the beach games. The Raw Egg Toss was won by Wendy & David Spaight, the Water Balloon Toss was won by Mary & Roger Gordon, and the Pickle Spitting Contest was won by Roger Gordon. Roger set a new D-8 record at 17 1/2 feet and Dave Pierson receives Honorable Mention for his distance of 15 feet. Congratulations to all the winners and THANK YOU to all who participated and helped out!!

The August Regular monthly meeting was not well attended. Was this because it was advertised as the 2012-2013 Term Nomina- tions Meeting? Nominations went forward and the Nominees are as follows: District Coordinator – Nancy James Treasurer – Charles “Chaz” Marum Secretary – C. Diann Marum Membership Director – David “Big Dave” Pierson Activities Director – R. Jan Yu Sgt At Arms – Chad “Chap” Robertson Since none of these seats are being competed for, you may as well congratulate all of the above Nominees when you see them.

As of the D-8 August meeting, the membership problem has still not been completely resolved. At least 8 of the missing member- ships have been taken care of. Twenty have not. Dave Pierson, D-8 Membership Director will be working diligently on this. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for the patience.

Reminder: NOVEMBER 6 th is Election Day – do you “really” know who you’re voting for? Is your candidate of choice motorcycle friendly? There’s still time to find out. The ABATE State office has gone to a lot of work to identify the reps and who’s running in your area. Utilize this list, please and come to the October meeting!!

On a personal note, I’d like to thank D-5North for the fun time we had on their recent Poker Run. Nice group of folks, glad we were able to participate. Thanks to Allen for the great route we followed and to Cam for the awesome “road work”. Look forward to more.

Reminder to the D-8 officers – we have a BOD Quarterly meeting in early November (which will most likely be held in Macon) and I expect y’all to be there – let’s ride!!

‘til next time, be free, be safe, do your part. Support ABATE and your District. Nancy James DC-D8

ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES – None available at this time.

DC report – Nancy James – Went to the BOD meeting in Macon. There was a lot of discussion on information that came from that meeting. Some concerns about membership problems. We got a new membership list and there are still a lot missing from the sheet. Dave Pierson will need to send state a problem resolution form for each new member not showing up on the records. The Swap meet has been postponed. Seems there was not enough advertisements and vendors to draw people in. This month is nomination time for 2012-2013 Officers. Think about any issues you may have about Georgia laws you would like to be addressed at the State level from our district. We can discuss them at our next regular meeting.

TREASURER – given by Chaz Marum –

We have $ 305.37 in petty cash and $ 595.34 in checking account. Total of $900.71

SECRETARY – given by Diann Marum – In her absence of the July 16 th meeting, she ask if anyone took minutes and it seems they weren’t available.

MEMBERSHIP – reported by Nancy James - There is still a harsh number of memberships still missing from the membership list. Nancy James ask Dave Pierson to make a copy of all missing applications of each member. We voted in favor of Dave Pierson spending the money for a calling post for D-8. Chap Robertson arrived at the time of the calling post discussion. Current membership: 40 shows on the list but should be more.

ACTIVITIES report – given by Jan Yu – We had a fair time and turnout at the “Beat the Heat” poker run. The weather seems to have been a factor. 10-28 is our Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins poker run. Nancy James will get the route and details together. There is an issue with the Sno Cap event, ABATE D-8 needs to write S.C. ABATE a check for $45. ABATE D-8 and Dixie Thunder co- sponsored this event.

District 9-2 August 2012 Meeting Minutes The meeting began at 7:00 p.m. at Los Nopales in LaGrange. The officer reports followed the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. Sue Duggan read the minutes and they were approved as read. Michelle Leady stated we have 46 current members. She stated four members are about to expire and three renewed this evening. Bridget Platt reported we have $396 in our account. Al Harper explained about Obama’s executive orders and told all of us to check it out on You Tube. A discussion followed regarding E15 fuel and how this type of fuel would present a problem for motorcyclists. We actually need to get away from self-blending pumps. The pump you are using already contains some of the gas from the person who pumped before you. Therefore, you may be pumping a lower octane gasoline into your tank than what you are currently paying for. Al also stated the E10 fuel is being phased out. Be careful where you get your fuel and you might want to think about a fuel additive such as SeaFoam (see http:// www.seafoamsales.com/motor-treatment.html for more information). Susan Hightower had just returned from a surgery leave of absence. We’re glad she’s back. Jimmy was absent this evening. He’s having surgery on his rotator cuff soon, so best wishes for a speedy recovery.

District 11

Sunday, September 9, 2012 @ Red Leg Saloon & Grill (2805 Argyle Rd, Bloomingdale, GA)

*Our Sgt-at-Arms, Reaper, was not in attendance. He and a deer had a difference of opinion over right-of-way and I guess the native won the argument because Reaper broke his leg and ended up with some delightful souvenir pins in it. In his absence, his Assistant, Bobby, called the meeting to Order at 3:10pm.

*Our photographer, Coach, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

*Under normal circumstances, our Chaplain, Eddie Sasser would lead us in prayer. Unfortunately he ALSO went down a couple of weeks ago and broke his leg in two places so he wasn't at the meeting either! Jill Ward of the Bomber Girls had been in touch with our previous Chaplain and friend, Virgil, who had moved to Ohio in June, and he had emailed her a special prayer for our District for this meeting and she read it aloud.

OFFICERS REPORTS

*First up, Activities Director, St. Louis. He expressed a big, BIG thank you to the CMA and the Wingmen for all their help in the clean up at the Shady Oaks Campground where Big Roy's is being held. (We had been asked to keep our reports short in the interest of elections but I can elaborate here! The Wingmen had shown up a week EARLY as they had a conflicting event out of town and they REALLY set the bar for the rest of us! It helped too that the owner of the property, anticipating a wedding reception in his campground, had begun to attack his overgrown field/forest a little at a time weeks before, making everyone's job easier. CMA came in with the CUTEST little tractor/bucket combo I ever saw. They'd lift someone up to chainsaw some branches and afterward use the bucket to haul the bundles to the burn pile! What team work! Everybody double checked the plumbing and electrical for RV hook-ups. The place looks great!) Motion made to accept - 2nded - none opposed - accepted.

*Next, out Treasurer, Darlene, made a simple report. Our checking account was barely over the allowable amount but we had per- mission for our VERY SLIGHT overage because of our 3-day event being so soon and the need for expenses being imminent. Mo- tion made to accept - 2nded - none opposed - accepted.

33 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News *Betsy, our Membership Director, told us all that she received news thru email last week that could answer questions OUR member- ship had been blasting her with. We have told everyone at our meetings that when we accept your information and your money for membership or renewal, we send it DIRECTLY to State. Once it gets there, it's out of our hands. What Betsy learned last week is that at the end of June, the State Membership Director's husband became seriously ill and that affected her ability to do HER job with ABATE, and that's why there have been problems with processing and getting cards. It should begin to straighten out now. The last list Betsy pulled from STATE'S membership roster had us at 108 members. At today's meeting she took in FIVE renewals and ONE new membership !!! She tells us there have been FOUR State Membership Directors This term. During her time in office, Betsy learned to keep records for herself - and a good thing too - there are no delays of information and she's sure it's up to date !! ** As a segway to the membership issue, St. Louis told us there had been some re-districting and LONG COUNTY, previously of District 15, is now part of District 11. WELCOME LONG COUNTY !!! Now you're OFFICIALLY part of the family !! Motion was made to accept - 2nded - none opposed - accepted.

*Junkyard broke the bad news to the membership that due to "unforeseen circumstances" there were no minutes from last month's meeting to be read. (insert sad face here) [Would any of you believe that a thief broke into my house and stole ONLY my materials from last month's meeting and NOTHING ELSE? ...NO?! ... well, then....how about this then ... it was a dark and stormy night (we've had a few of those so that part is believable!) and I was jerked awake by the sound of wind RIPPING thru the house like the Wizard of Oz and the first thing that I thought of was, "Oh, no! My minutes from August's meeting! Where are they?!"....wait! wait! WAIT! You don't buy this scenario EITHER ?!?! ...tough crowd ... How about I'm so busy I don't whether I'm coming or going and my house is in a shambles till after October 1st when the new ABATE Secretary takes over and in all the confusion of my life I sim- ply MISLAID all of my ABATE stuff from August - notebook, clipboard, EVERYTHING! I searched for over an hour. Ya'll were lucky I didn't show up wearing a shoe on my ear and my underwear on my head !!] A motion was made to table the reading of the minutes from August until the October meeting - 2nded - none opposed - accepted. (Now I REALLY have to find that stuff !!)

*Assistant Sgt-at-Arms, Bobby had nothing to add about Reaper. Motion was made to accept - 2nded - none opposed - accepted.\

*Rex, our Webmaster, had a brief message for us ... "It's all good!" (Thanks, Rex!) Motion made to accept - 2nded - none opposed - accepted.*Our Jr. ABATE Liaison,Trish, was not in attendance.

OLD BUSINESS

*** In last month's meeting we nominations for new officers. Taxes, religion and politics can breed a hotbed of emotions and District 11 proved to be no exception. There were heated conversations and angry words. For our reader's sakes, I'll have to clean this up a bit, but our D.C. was basically accused of having said "Screw Veterans". SO HOLD EVERYTHING RIGHT THERE!! DON'T GET YOUR PANTIES IN A TWIST OR YOUR BVD'S UP YOUR BACK!! Junkyard is a Vet!! Why would he say such a thing?! a) Junkyard had recently had major lung surgery and long speeches were difficult for him. He'd been talking all afternoon already. b) He was responding to a statement about our Sgt-at-Arms less than 100% attendance at meetings and events. Most recently, our Sgt-at-Arms had been assisting his daughter, a military dependent, out of town, and so did not make a meeting. c) Junkyard tried to say that if you can't support the military, the vets AND THEIR FAMILIES, the dependents, then go screw yourselves. That was the MEANING behind what he said (with his limited amount of air at the time) and if it was taken out of context, that was never his in- tent.

** Buzz, of the Savannah Wingmen, and a previous multi-office holder of ABATE, said that when there is a problem - a grievance - an issue - within the District (such as we have been having) take it to an Officer's Meeting. The meeting are open to the public. Try to deal with it there instead of turning it into a circus like the August meeting turned out to be. Go face to face with the people you have issues with - don't use the Internet to fight your battles.

TIME FOR ELECTIONS !!

Did we want to read the job descriptions again? A resounding NO from everyone!! Motion made to accept - 2nded - none opposed - accepted. We went thru every position asking for final nominations, using Robert's Rules for each one and collected two new names: Scott Collins for Sgt-at-Arms (which had been a vacant position), and a challenger for the position of Secretary: Pat Hardin. When we reached the position of District Coordinator, Kathy Green stepped forward and withdrew her name from the running. Valid mem- bers were asked to collect their ballots and at the same time the floor was opened for GOOD TO THE ORDER.

34 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER District News *First up were the owners of a relatively new local motorcycle shop called New South Motorsports who had machined a truly one- of-a-kind tribute to a recently fallen member of the Long County Wingmen, named Two-Step. Shield-shaped and made of diamond plate, it featured Two-Step's motorcycle tag, a memorial photo and a portion of a fender with a working tail light. Really remarkable and very moving.

*E.T. of the Effingham Wingmen invited us all to his upcoming nuptials to one of Red Leg's bartenders on September 23.

*Asst. Sgt-at-Arms, Bobby relayed a message from reaper who thanked everyone for all their help and support at the functions dur- ing his term of office. He also wanted to congratulate E.T. on his upcoming wedding. And once again, he was sorry he was not able to make this very important meeting.

*Next was Pat Hardin who promoted a weekend event at the BIG NASTY ATV PARK in Bloomingdale on September 16 where ABATE members get a discount! She also promoted an event for a family in need.

*Then Cindy of the Bomber Girls LRC came forward to remind us of their Silver Screen Scavenger Hunt for their soldiers on Sep- tember 29 that ENDS at Blueberry Hill blending VERY nicely into their Biker Appreciation Day event !

*Super Dave of the Savannah Wingmen came up to tell us that the Toy Run 2012 was about to get under way. Advertising/Memorial spots for the back of the t-shirts were available NOW!! Start selling - start asking business owners, friends, family - anybody - eve- rybody! (Remember ya'll - these shirts are COLLECTIBLES!!) He also reminded the Motorcycle Clubs AGAIN - get your event dates turned in for the ABATE calendar - we can't have events stacked on top of each other all the time! To maximize attendance at EVERYONE'S events, they HAVE to be spread out!!

** Webmaster Rex wants you all to know that when you buy an ABATE calendar ad, you now have the option for your ad to go on our website for JUST $50 more!! The ABATE calendar is black and white but your website ad can be full color and you can have a link to your business website as well. And remember, it's STILL a 365 day a year ad!!

*** To everyone who accepted the nominations for positions of Officers - THANK YOU!! That shows you were ready to make a commitment for ABATE, District 11, and we can't thank you enough for your support and willingness to do so.

There is a line in the ABATE Officers Handbook I want everyone to remember and take to heart - especially Officers - new AND OLD - after all, you took a vow! " ALWAYS represent ABATE of Georgia, Inc. in a POSITIVE manner." If you can't do that ...... well, ...... you don't belong in ABATE !!! If you weren't elected, I'm sorry, but there are plenty of opportunities to show your support for your District ! Volunteer for events. Ask if any Officers need an Assistant ! Carry ABATE material in your vehicle and PROMOTE ABATE AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY !!

** The votes had been tallied by members of the CMA under the eagle-eye of the Secretary, yours truly, and we announced the 2012-2013 term officers as follows: Sgt-at-Arms: Scott Collins. Activities Director: NONE. Legislative Director: Rex Williams: Membership Director: Betsy Haddock. Treasurer: Darlene Thornton-Williams. Secretary: Pat Hardin. District Coordinator: Junk- yard (David Jackson).

Congratulations to the New and Returning Officers of ABATE, District 11 !!!

Motion was made to close the meeting - 2nded - none opposed - accepted. Meeting ended at 4:35pm.

Stephanie handed out the meeting agenda and a copy of the Board of Directors meeting notes. The sign in list was circulated to all present. Sarah Beth, (Bat Witch) V.P. of ABATE First Coast Chapter of Florida was in attendance. Sarah Beth contributed an abundance of helpful information to use. It was such a blessing to have her in attendance today. It is so con- structive to be able to work with other district chapters like this.

Meeting opened with a moment of silence in remembrance for 9-11-01 families and survivors. Motion to approve the minutes of the August meeting was made. 1 st by Jerald, 2 nd by Lucious. A copy of the Au- gust minutes was given to all in attendance to review. Treasurer report by Randy- Reading from the 8-31-12-bank statement we have $279.00 in the account. We have $27.00 in District 15 petty cash. A discussion of the Dist. 15 dice game was made. Discussing $1.00 per roll with a 50/50 split to the person with five of a kind on the dice. Randy had the last 3 bank statements available for members to examine.

State Monthly Newsletter discussion. State Newsletter was present to discuss. Discussion of D-15 annual Pig-Pickin’ event for 2013. Memorial Day was presented as the day to consider. Stepha- nie asked for other ideas for an event date. Send suggestions to her email ASAP. A discussion to follow at the Oct. meeting. Consider ideas for sponsors for this membership drive. Consider vendor donations for the event. Consider selling sponsorships for a wall calendar to be handed out at the event like ABATE First Coast did. Con- sider the price ranges for the sponsorships. Give the calendars to all attending. Acquire more information from Sarah Beth about the calendar.

The Meeting of the Minds in N.C.- Stephanie will not be able to attend this year. Volunteers were asked to attend.

A discussion of the Ga. State Legislative meeting was made. Stephanie was present with one of the Intersection kits for us to review. Stephanie had a copy of the letters that go along with each kit. School districts are tar- geted for the kits, through the local law enforcement department. A discussion about a previous meeting with Eric in attendance, discussed the possibility of getting the CMA chapters in the 2 adjoining counties to assist handing these out through ABATE members in their chapters. D-15 has 12 kits available to distribute. Stephanie needs volunteers to do this. Maybe each member being responsible for a county in our district was suggested. Write up the press release and use it after the kit is distributed in the county school.

Discussion about the possibility of getting the state to issue vehicle license plates with ABATE on them, as they do other organizations. Maybe the state can collect a small fee from each motorcycle licensed vehicle and distrib- ute that to the State ABATE organization.

Discussion about getting the rubber wristbands in the ABATE store for distribution to the public. Discussion about a State Certified Road Guard program for bikers to be authorized to control intersections on a ride, if public officials are not available to do so. Stephanie has appointed Anne and Jerald as co-administrators for this D-15 site on Facebook.

Discussion about obtaining rack cards and small business cards to hand out, displaying pertinent ABATE informa- tion. Contact the State and see if they will be able to assist once we show them the idea in print. Stephanie to handle this.

New Business-

We need to discuss the officer stability of D-15 for the upcoming elections for 2013 at Oct. meeting.

Discussion with Sarah Beth about the upcoming Dec. 1 Charity ride to involve D-15 and the First Coast chapters. We need to submit our location ideas. Last two stops are in Fl. Jerald was asked to work on a flyer idea for D-15. Sarah Beth is to email a copy of their flyer so I can make one similar to theirs. We need to email suggestions to Stephanie for whom we would like D-15 to donate the funds to. The funds will be divided per chapter. A formula will be created, and agreed upon by both chapters, to promote competition between the 2 districts to make this a large and successful ride. A membership drive will be incorporated with this event. Stephanie asked Jerald to submit a small ad notice of this idea to be presented to State for inclusion in the next State newsletter. Jerald agreed to try to get this completed in time. We can submit the ad to the Full Throttle magazine, as well as other advertising web sites. We will need a support vehicle to follow on this ride to carry our donations and other arti- cles for the event needed. D-15 October meeting was posted as 10-7-12 @2PM @ Toucans Ale House in Brunswick. Date is subject to change once we check our calendars. ABATE First Coast Chapter announced their meeting 9-16-12, @ Wanda’s home @ 1PM.

Motion made to adjourn the meeting. Motion by Lucious, 2 nd by Randy. Meeting adjourned @ 4:10PM.

4 West continued… October 12, 13, 14 is the race at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, and one of the largest swap meets remaining. Jon reminded us that he is going to be camping there. Even as a day trip is should be lots of fun. Contact him for more info. (Call Ann for his number, if you don’t have it.) Elections: Jon Lambert agreed to take the DC position, as well as that of acting Activities director. Cheef Smith will remain in his legislative position; Dwayne Winn will still be in charge of the checkbook; Gerald Hanvey will remain as Sgt at Arms; Ann Turner will take up the secretary’s pen. This slated was approved with no opposition. We discussed the three questions that make up the Legislative Survey. The first one, (Proceed on Red ) question reads rather straight-forwardly. The second should have some clarification. The reason for the misdemeanor charge, and not the stronger felony one,may be a good one in some instances. If a person were to be found not-guilty of a felony charge, the victim’s family has no further recourse. The same result from a misdemeanor charge could mean civil action could be pursued. And the perpetrator pun- ished more severely ( one cold hope.) The Motorcycle Only checkpoints is just plain WRONG. And against the Federal Highway’s wishes. Yes, Virginia did rule that using DOT funds were not legal, as did a number of other states. Georgia was the only state to accept federal monies for Motorcycle Only “safety check points” and it will take much concerted effort on our parts to get this reversed. We also discussed the difference between “lane filtering” and “lane splitting”. Filtering is/should be allowed when a biker is await- ing a green light, and is “back in the pack”. He/She should be allowed to proceed to the front of the line of STOPPED vehicles to empower him to proceed thru the intersection first. In much the same way cars may turn right at intersections marked with “Yield” signs and specially marked turn lanes We all agreed that the third of the survey questions did not do a good job explaining itself. And it introduced a wholly different sub- ject (lane filtering) after a discussion of (revenue generating)“safety” checkpoints. And we agreed that the survey was a good idea, but written so as to be confusing to the average ( not law-trained) person. Which may help explain why so few have been sent in. But, read the questions, and either send the survey in, or answer it online. As we are an organization whose purpose is to keep our lawmakers informed of our collective position on matters related to our preferred mode of transportation, we must make sure these same lawmakers are aware of our opinions. We held a 50/50 drawing, with 20.50 going into our treasury. Ride with shiny side up, and the sticky side down. See you on 7 October, at 12:30 at The Timbers, when we will beginning planning for the Christmas Toy Run ( stops at DFACS and the Center for Children and Young Adults ) (( riding as groups of friends)).

40 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER 41 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER BEEN BITTEN BY A TAR SNAKE? CRACK SEALERS - LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY AND A REVISIT OF

IMRE SZAUTER’S EFFORTS

by Rod Taylor - A.B.A.T.E. Legal Services

Q: "What's the legality or proper use of tar strips used to seal cracks in asphalt? I'm curious because it seems that once it hits about 85 or 90 degrees, those strips become slick as ice and I've seen roads where little asphalt is left bare while the rest of the road is cov- ered in those strips. I almost lost my bike on a corner with such." Submitted by Ed Dixon- ABATE Member

A. I remember it just like yesterday. It was hotter than hell as I turned onto U.S. 40 on my way to Ohio. New crack sealer every- where. A state trooper was stopped in the opposite lane I was turning into, and I was heading right at him in my turn. Then it hap- pened. I hit the gooey black stuff as I turned and going down hard. I remember putting my steel toed boots down and as I did that my foot plate hit the steel toe so hard that it bounced my bike upright. The image of the wide eyes of the cop are still with me and I felt like Evel Knievel. I had just dodged a mess that would have put me underneath a state trooper's car because of crack sealer.

And now for an answer to Ed’s question.

Imre Szauter of the AMA is doing a yeoman's job in steering reason and good engineering in the right direction. I have included his letter to the New York State Department of Transportation and its response. Clearly the new specs for crack sealer are 1-3 millime- ters deep and only 2 inches wide.

Mr. Szauter’s letter to the State of New York:

Founded in 1924, the AMA exists to further the interests of American motorcyclists, while serving the needs of its members.

Our association was contacted recently by a member living in New York State. He indicated that “tar snakes”, areas of road surface repaired with crack filler, have once again become a severe problem in parts of New York. He wrote that his wife was involved in a motorcycle crash during 2003 as a result of losing traction on a series of tar snakes in a curve. Several of his friends have also re- ported traction problems this year.

In the past, investigations uncovered cases of misapplication or improper materials used on many state roads. Previous reminders to road crew supervisors and contractors that application of these materials present a hazard when not used according to the specifica- tions have been effective in reducing dangerous areas for motorcyclists.

On August 1, 1995, New York Department of Transportation Assistant Commissioner & Chief Engineer, Michael J. Cuddy, P.I., wrote to our association in response to a letter from Sean Maher, AMA legislative affairs specialist, on this topic. I have enclosed a copy of Mr. Cuddy’s letter for your reference. I seek your assistance to once again bring this problem to the attention of all New York Department of Transportation Regional Di- rectors. Stressing the importance of applying the correct materials per established engineering practices will reduce the danger to residents and visitors motorcycling in New York.

Thank you for your consideration and attention to this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, I would be happy to address them.”

New York Department of Transportation Response:

“I am replying to your letter of June 22, 2004 to Commissioner Boardman. Since Mike Cuddy sent you the letter of August 1, 1995, we have significantly changed our crack sealing specifications due to the problems that we experienced around that time. Our new specifications only allow a two inch wide, one to three millimeters thick overband of material centered over a crack. Additionally, no sealing of secondary or tertiary cracks is allowed. All crack sealing done by state forces or by Department contractors have con- formed to these specification since 1996.

42 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER The New York State Department of Transportation does not have jurisdiction over all the roads in New York State. Other jurisdic- tions include counties, towns, cities, villages, and certain authorities. We have done the best we can to inform all jurisdictions of the possible ramifications of sealing cracks using the traditional overban method (two inches wide and a maximum of one to three millimeters thick at the center, tapering to the edges) , (emphasis added) but there may be a few that either didn’t get the message or haven’t implemented the new sealing guidelines. In June of 1996, the Department made two presentations on the new sealing guidelines to the Town Highway Superintendents of New York at their annual meeting in Ithaca, NY.

Also in 1996, we conducted crack sealing training sessions for all Department employees involved in crack sealing, both project se- lection and project inspection. Since that time, the proper procedure for crack sealing has been routinely included in training pro- grams for newly appointed Department maintenance managers. In 1999, 2001 and earlier this year, we conducted formal training sessions at locations around the state concerning several pavement preventive maintenance techniques. Crack sealing was one of the treatments covered. At all these training sessions, we emphasize the importance of adhering to the current crack sealing specifica- tions as both a safety issue and a performance requirement. A presentation on crack sealing will also be a given at the upcoming NYSDOT- Association of General Contractors Technical Conference to be held in Saratoga Springs, NY this December...”

As you can see Imre has been our watch dog on this issue for a long time. He needs our help. So next month in this column, we will cover everything you ever wanted to know about cracks; to fill or not to fill; to seal or not to seal, so to speak.

Remember- no more than 1-3 millimeters deep tapered to no more than 2 inches wide . Anything beyond that is dangerous, so get out your measuring sticks, take cell phone photos --and report it to ROADHAZARD.ORG. Our mantra is, “MORE THAN THAT CAN KILL A BIKER”.

44 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Road Work By Dr. Sue Duggan

If there’s one thing motorcyclists need to get from place to place, it’s a road. We can do with- out them on occasion, but eventually we’ll need a hard surface to complete our journey. Unfortu- nately, all roads need repair. Weathering, erosion, wear, and tear break down surfaces and sooner or later these surfaces need to be either replaced or repaired. One issue I’d like to address is the difference in height variation on roads being repaired. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has special provisions for road repair. According to Section 150.06, traffic control, page 49, “A ny type of work such as paving, grinding, trenching, or ex- cavation that creates a difference in elevation between travel lanes or between the travelway and the shoulder shall not begin until the Contractor is prepared and able to continuously place the re- quired typical section to within two inches (2”) of the existing pavement elevation. For any areas that the two inches minimum difference in elevation cannot be accomplished the section shall be healed. Healing the pavement can include the use of crushed stone materials. If crushed stone is used, the materials will be incorporated into the work and the Engineer shall determine if the crushed stone meets specification for gradation and quality. Kathy Zahul, from GDOT, states their contracts allow for differences in elevation up to two inches between travel lanes and can remain in place for a maximum of 14 calendar days.On all highways, differences in elevation more than two inches between surfaces will not be allowed for more than a 24 hour period. According to Kathy Zahul, “The time allowed for elevation differences between a lane and the shoulder varies by height of the drop-off. Use of barrels and sometimes a healed section is required depending on the elevation difference and the amount of time it will need to be in place.” She stresses the importance of signage and their guidelines specifically state no work shall be started on any project unless the appropriate traffic control devices have been placed. Safety features are installed and fully operational before a change can take place. In other words, GDOT will do what needs to be done in order to repair or replace existing pavement and they have specific guidelines to follow. For more information regarding these guide- lines, go to http://www.dot.ga.gov/doingbusiness/TheSource/special_provisions/shelf/sp150.pdf . If you have specific questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at educa- [email protected] and don’t forget to visit our website at abatega.org to report any road haz- ards you encounter.

45 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Taking a moment to look at the effects of the new Sponsor and Supporter Program

This past month we shipped the first batch of our new Sponsor and Supporter sup- plies to each district. This month we will be sending an additional batch of stickers to each district so each district can fully engage in the process the way our test districts have for the last few months. In this time there have been a few people who said this program “wasn’t the answer” or that is “didn’t work” but those individuals appear to miss the point of this program, a point which is two fold

1) This program fulfills the promise we make to each ABATE member when their sign up or renew, it is the represents the list of Businesses that offer each ABATE member a discount on their services. It also now indentifies those busi- nesses on each of their front doors so when an ABATE member walks up to that business for the first time they can clearly see this business is helping them fight for the rights of Georgia motorcyclists. 2) It brings a new level of advertising to ABATE throughout the state that was not there previously. In the last version of the ABATE sponsor program, the sponsoring business added their name to a list, that list was then printed in the ABATE Newsletter. If someone did not have access to a newsletter then they had no idea the Business supported ABATE, but what is worse than that is the act of sponsoring ABATE brought no attention to ABATE to non- ABATE-members who frequent that business. The new program not only does that, but also gives that business a way to help promote ABATE in the form of the membership easels which each are stocked with our hard back infor- mation flyer that includes a membership application on the back of each one.

When we launched this new effort back at the May Board of Directors meeting, we saw immediate results from Districts that participated in the effort in addition when other districts were added to the effort they also saw positive results in being able to offer an immediate result to the new sponsor/supporters in the form of the ABATE supporter sticker being applied to their door. In that time we received feedback that the stickers we had been using since the re-launch of the sponsor program in 2011 were too hard to see, as a result we replaced those stickers wit the new white backed water re- sistant vinyl stickers we are now using. The difference is very noticeable and every district so far that has already re- ceived their new materials reports improved visibility with the new stickers.

Now lets look at how effective this new effort is, Of the six districts that participated in the May re-launch four of those districts sold all of the supporter memberships within the first month, one district sold one of their supporter member- ships and one of the first four requested an additional sticker for a supporter they sold after a meeting with a local riding club that met at that supporter’s business location, meanwhile the remaining test district sold none. In total with this new effort we went from 18 District locations, the majority of which stated that they had never received their Supporter sup- plies for their district sponsor location to now 36 separate locations across the state of Georgia where an ABATE mem- ber walking through the door will be greeted by a sticker on the door, that same sticker will be something non members will see and help them to identify the ABATE easel located inside that sponsoring or supporting business even if they do not take a membership with them it will have still helped familiarize that non member with ABATE of Georgia, a problem we will continue to fight by continuing this sponsor and supporter effort. Our most recent supporter was signed up on September 26th by District 4 East. Take a quick look at our Sponsor and Supporter map and any one can see how effective this effort is and can continue to be as we replenish our supplies and send those supplies out to each district. In some Districts we now have four separate locations where customers will see the ABATE eagle on the front door and membership easel. inside, in total 36 locations now across the state with more coming each day. While not every ABATE of Georgia sponsor or Supporter business is or has to be a Motorcycle related business, the fact remains that with over 2500 of those motorcycle related businesses getting the ABATE name on the door of each one is the surest way to reach every rider in Georgia.

46 October 2012 A.B.A.T.E. OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Above we can see how many new locations( the blue arrows) where ABATE members will know they are welcomed and will re- ceive a discount as well as non-members will see the ABATE Eagle and once they see the Membership easel inside the business they can read more about ABATE of Georgia and consider joining. Thirty six locations in all.
