Understanding the Emerging Danger of the Stand Alone Complex
Andrew DeMarco University Honors in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government Capstone Advisor: Professor Andrea Tschemplik, CAS: Philosophy Standing Alone: Understanding the Emerging Danger of the Stand Alone Complex Japanese director and screenwriter, Kenji Kamiyama, has written works on the implications of the acceleration of technology, but it is in his most famous work, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, that he renders his most insightful and ominous theory about the changing nature of human society. Kamiyama proposes that in an increasingly interconnected society, the potential for individuals to act independently of one another, yet toward what may appear to others to be the same goal increases as well. Standalone individuals may be deceived into emulating the actions of an original actor for a perceived end when neither of these existbecoming “copycats without originals.” Kamiyama’s theory of the Stand Alone Complex is a valid one, and the danger it heralds needs to be addressed before the brunt of its effects are felt by those unable obtain remedy. What little literature exists on the theory is primarily concerned with medialogy, but the examination herein addresses the theoretical and philosophical grounding on which the theory stands. This study finds sufficient grounding for the theory through theoretical and philosophical discourse and historical case study. The practical and moral implications of the Stand Alone Complex are addressed through related frameworks, as Kant’s moral system provides a different perspective that informs legal discussions of intent. The implications for national governments are found highly dangerous, and further discourse on the theory is recommended, despite its “juvenile” origins. -

1 PREVIOUSLY AT KAMI-CON KAMI-CON CHARACTERS PREVIOUSLY AT KAMI-CON... Shio and Kosho, with the help of YOU the congoers, defeated the alien forces and grounded Shoyu on planet Vidya—a world where the physics, landmarks, and inhabitants have developed into something remarkably similar to the video games we are familiar with here on Earth. However, it seems that Shoyu would not be defeated so easily. After crash landing on Vidya, he began to court the local inhabitants of the planet to join him and fight for his cause! With the planet he was supposed to be trapped on becoming a new source of power, it was up to you Kami-Congoers once again to rise to the occasion and help Shio and Kosho stop Shoyu! (This seems to happen a lot. Who would have known that having the Spirit of the Yandere Black Turtle for a magical animal mascot would have brought so much drama to Kami-Con? Oh, well!) With the help of the congoers, Shoyu only managed to recruit three powerful allies— Ken from Street Fighter, Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros., and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Shio and Kosho recruited Ryu from Street Fighter, and Vault Boy from Fallout. These heroes met on the battlefield known asSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate! It was truly an epic match—and in the end, it was Shio and Kosho who proved victorious! His coup having been thwarted, Shoyu agreed to team back up with the congirls to continue their journey through space toward World Conquest! Everything should be fine now as long as they don’t all, say, crash their starship into a mysterious beach planet… right? This weekend we're celebrating Anime Boston's 10th anniversary. We would never have reached this milestone year without our fabulous guests, the support and effort of our staff, and the overwhelming love and inspiration our attendees have provided over the last nine years. Thank you! 2 Anime Boston 2012 LETTER FROM THE CON CHAIR Greetings! On behalf of the New England Anime Society, our honored guests and the entire Anime Boston staff, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to Anime Boston 2012! This year is particularly exciting, as we are celebrating our tenth anniversary. When I think back on 2002, when we were working to organize ourselves and plan for the first year of the convention, I’m still astounded at how much has the event has grown and developed. Like a child, the convention “grew up” faster than we expected, and around it, we have lived ten years of life. For those of us who were there from the beginning this means ten years of marriages, children born, friends who have passed on, break-ups, falling in love, learning new things, losing some battles, and winning others.
