THE ITALIAN PASTORAL COMMISSION AND THE PIRANDELLO THEATRE

…A story of faith, courage, hope and strength of the human spirit…

BRESSANI

A new Canadian play written by: FRANK SPEZZANO A HISTORICAL DRAMA IN TWO ACTS ABOUT THE FIRST ITALIAN JESUIT IN NORTH AMERICA

DON BOSCO AUDITORIUM 2 St. Andrews Blvd. (Islington Ave., South of Highway 401)

Thursday, November 13 – Sunday, November 16, 2008

Renowned writer, director and playwright, Frank Spezzano, brings life to a magnificent piece of historical drama to the stage. Opening Nov.13th, 2008 at 8:00pm at The Pirandello Theatre, Don Bosco Auditorium at 2 St. Andrews Blvd., Bressani, a full-length play written entirely from an historical document tells the stirring tale of Father Francesco Bressani, a Jesuit Priest who lived in Canada from 1642 -1650 and established some of the early contacts with the Natives of First Nations of North America. His mission to minister to Natives in the New World, brings Bressani immeasurable trials and resistance, testing his faith in countless ways. In a sudden twist of fate, when he is captured by Iroquois Indians, tortured, mutilated and deemed to die a brutal death at the very hands of those he came to minister, Bressani finds hope and strength through his faith. Miraculously, during a Grand Council Meeting held in the Iroquois camp where he is held prisoner, Bressani’s life is spared and his sentence commuted to his servitude of an elderly Indian woman. True faith and divine intervention in action!. Later, Bressani is ransomed to a Dutch sea Captain for 20 pieces of gold and returns to France. Incredibly, once he has regained his strength and purpose, he returns once again to the shores of New France to continue his mission! He continues to minister to the natives and becomes known as a symbol of indomitable faith by all who hear his message and gaze upon his mutilated hands, rendered by his former captors. Father Francesco Bressani is recognized by negotiating a peace treaty among rival native tribes. At that moment he embraces his former captors calling them brothers, bringing to the fore a moment in history that encompasses beauty, devotion of his faith, and love of people of all faiths. Truly a play worth seeing!

BRESSANI Opens Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. Runs to Nov. 16, Matinees Thurs. Nov. 13, 1, p.m. Fri. Nov.14, 1: p.m. Fri. Eve. 8:00 p.m. Saturday Nov. 15, 8: p. m. Sunday Matinee Nov. 16, 3: pm.

Father Redmond cross-country team brings home gold October 16, 2008

Father John Redmond's cross country team ran through the forest and over the hills to bring back the gold medal.

The team beat out top schools from central and northern Ontario at the Cardinal Carter Invitational on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Woodbridge. Grade 9 Redmond runner Chance Jones placed first leading his team to the top spot overall. Vanessa McLeod, also in Grade 9, placed fifth and led her team to second place overall. On Oct. 9 the team competed at the pre-Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Meet of Champions.

Jones lost to Shawn Master of Sarnia. "The two boys put on a fantastic show by running to see who has the most guts," coach Stephen Strong said. "Master was able to pass Jones in the final 300m to take first place." Father Redmond Grade 9 boys team finished second with 63 points to Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs' 60 points. On Wednesday, Oct. 1, Jones and McLeod both won gold at the Abbey Park meet at Centennial Park. The boys team finished second overall and girls team finished in first place.

Grade 10 student Kyra Galli finished seventh and led her team to a second place finish overall. On Sept. 27 the team competed at the 44th annual McQuaid Cross Country Invitational in Rochester, New York. Jones set a meet record of 7:50 over the 2.4-km course and placed third. His finish led the team to a third place finish. A student from St. Catharines and one from Hamilton placed first and second. McLeod placed fifth, which led her team to second place behind a school from Pennsylvania. The Grade 9 boys team compete at the Nike Boardwalk Beaches Relay on Oct. 17 before heading off to the city championships on Oct. 23 at Centennial Park.

Grade 9 boys cross-country team members are Chance Jones, Ray Brown, Harrison Sloan, Will McIntyre, Marcus Rose and Dylan Dimock. Grade 9 girls team members are Vanessa McLeod, Tess Kuhelj, Laura Kosiba, Vanessa Depetrillo, Lauren Cusuck, Alanna Sokic, Cindy Kurt, Emilia Lussow and Laryssa K.

With a report from CTV Toronto's Jim Junkin

A legal mural in a Borden Street alley (photo courtesy Toronto Police Service).(left)

Students from St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School help paint over tags in a Lamb Ave. alley on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008. (right)

Weekend projects target illegal graffiti Students and others in two city neighbourhoods whiled away their Saturday by eradicating some illegal graffiti and replacing some with legal murals. "There's tons of tags. It's a little disrespectful. It's not really anyone's property and they're just doing it unlawfully," student Justin Shea told CTV Toronto on Saturday.

In Harbord Village, illegal graffiti in the Croft Street Laneway will be painted over and replaced with legal murals. "It really disses the community. On the other hand, when we get together like this and clean some of it up, it reinforces the community," said Colin Furness of the Harbord Village Residents' Association. "We've had people coming around all day long to check out what's going on, and feeling pretty good about it."

Here's some of the other groups taking part: • Central Technical High School Art Program • Humber College Police Foundations students • Police, business and property owners and graffiti artists

One thought in the battle against graffiti is to recognize young people enjoy creating it, but to channel that desire in a way that creates a win-win situation for the community. "Bringing property owners face to face with the youth creates an understanding. This often results in a 'Legal Wall' opportunity for the artist, and a beautiful art mural for the property owner," said the text on the Toronto Legal Graffiti Art page on YouTube. "The concept is that the mural is not vandalized by other graffiti artists out of respect for the art work. In short, graffiti can be a community building process if facilitated as such. "

In East Toronto, students from St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School near Greenwood-Danforth were to remove graffiti from neighbours' garage doors and fences and from the walls of their school on Saturday.

"I think it's very powerful in that they get to make a difference," Tracey Parish, the school's principal, told CTV Toronto. "And we tell them that one person can make a difference, and here they're working as a group of 24."

Student Ebony Gannon added: "It feels good to know that you're doing something that helps other people."

One resident said it's depressing to come home to tagged garages and fences. She described the students' efforts as "wonderful."

As a reward, the students get a pizza lunch and tickets to a Toronto Argonauts football game. The Canadian Tire store at Leslie Street and Lakeshore Boulevard provided supplies.

St. Benedict Soccer Spectacular It was a sunny day on October 10th, 2008, when, in what is becoming a bi-annual event, the staff and students of St. Benedict C.S. took to the soccer field to participate in the Soccer Spectacular, a fundraising game with all proceeds going to the Angel Foundation for Learning. Each student was again asked to bring in a suggested donation of a loonie to attend the game. Given last May’s results of the Basketball Loonacy game, where the teachers were victorious over the students, there was an obvious desire for the students to make a comeback in this game. It was a tight game for the first half, with the teachers scoring a lone goal against a strong, youthful student side. With obvious wheezing on the part of the teachers at halftime, it looked promising for the student side as they planned and plotted their second-half strategy with Ms. Galati. Sure enough, the second half fared well for the students, scoring their own goal in response to the staffs’ only goal. Regular time ended in a 1-1 tie, which prompted an overtime period that again left both sides empty-handed. A shoot-out was called for by the referee, and both sides chose 3 skilled players to send to the net. Through skilled goal tending and crafty shot placement, the teachers scored one more lone goal to win the game! The students took it well, and vowed a rematch in the spring in the second annual Basketball Loonacy game. Special thanks go to Mr. Migliaccio for organizing the game, and to Mr. Swanek and Ms. Martins for their ongoing support.

HEAD CARETAKER PRE-QUALIFYING TEST PROCESS

Appendix C of the collective agreement between CUPE Local 1280 and the Board states that “Pre-qualified List A and Pre-qualified List B shall be such list of bargaining unit members that have pre-qualified, by such selection process that may be in effect from time to time, for posted Head Caretaker vacancies in Category A and Category B schools respectively.” The Operations Department and CUPE Local 1280 have agreed on the following pre-qualifying process.

Employees wishing to pre-qualify for a Head Caretaker posting will be required to write pre-qualifying test(s). No exceptions will be made. Testing will occur approximately every six months.

Tests will be based on the Seneca College Heating 701 course and/or the Seneca College BESII course manuals, and/or the current Head Caretaker Manual.

There will be four tests (see registration form). Please review the following points carefully:

• Assistant Caretakers registering to write the pre-qualifying test(s) will be obliged to write 2 tests: 1) the general Head Caretaker test and 2) the Head Caretaker Mechanical test. Employees registering to write these tests must attach a copy of their Heating 701 certificate or Building Operator certificate to the registration form.

• Assistant Caretakers may apply to write the Head Caretaker BESII test and the Head Caretaker BESII Mechanical test, but must attach a copy of their completed BES certificate with the registration form.

• Head Caretakers currently in Category A schools (codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) who wish to pre-qualify for Category B schools (codes 7, 8, 9 and 9+) will be required to write the General Head Caretaker test and the Head Caretaker Mechanical test.

• Head Caretakers currently in Category A schools who wish to pre-qualify for Category B schools requiring BESII will be required to write the Head Caretaker BESII test and the BESII Mechanical test. Employees registering to write this test must attach a copy of their completed BES II certificate to the registration form.

• Head Caretakers currently in Category B schools who wish to pre-qualify for BES II schools will be required to write the Head Caretaker BESII test and the BESII Mechanical test. Employees registering to write this test must attach a copy of their completed BES II certificate to the registration form.

The passing mark for all tests will be 65%. Employees must pass both tests to be short listed.

Employees will be advised of the results of their test scores by letter.

Employees will be eligible to re-write the test when the next test session is confirmed. However, each time an employee wishes to re-write the pre-qualifying test, they will need to register by the deadline date for that specific testing session. Human Resources will not keep lists of employees who do not pre-qualify or who wish to re-write.

If employees request to re-write the pre-qualifying test, the new test score will be the test score used from that point forward – even if it is lower than the previous test score.

If an employee’s test results indicate that they have pre-qualified, their name, seniority date and the test results will be kept on a spreadsheet to be used when Head Caretaker positions are posted.

The pre-qualifying spreadsheet will be kept by the Human Resources department and is strictly confidential.

Employees’ test results will be filed in the employee file within the Operations department and will be strictly confidential.

Pre-qualified employees will be short listed to August 31, 2009. At that time, the process will be evaluated, and Union/Management will determine if the short list will be extended. If extended, due to changing technology and its impact on our schools, 3 years has been determined as a probable suitable short list period. Once the 3-year period expires, employees will be required to re-write the test(s).

Pre-qualified employees who bid on Head Caretaker positions after May 1, 2007 will continue to be subject to the current posting/interview award process (seniority issues, any specific qualification/experience required as noted in the posting, successful positive recommendation from the SQS, test score, good attendance record, etc.)
