Based on the existing material objects and teaching materials, this paper systematically sorts out the variety system of French silk fabrics, makes a detailed classification of varieties, and analyzes the political factors of the prosperity and development of French silk industry in the 18th century. 1. Preface The history of silk in France was not very long, but it indeed reached the peak of the world and was extremely glorious. Especially around the 18th century, which can be divided into four periods. Norwood, Mass., U.S.A. ; 155688 PREFACE This book has been written primarily to meet a need arising from the introduction of the study of textiles into the curriculum of the high school. The aim has been, there- fore, to present the subject matter in a form sufficiently simple and interesting to be grasped readily by the high school student, without sacrificing essential facts. It has not seemed desirable to explain in detail the mechanism of the various machines used in modern textile industries, but rather to show the student that the fundamental principles of textile manufacture found in the simple machines of primitive times are unchanged in the highl}^ developed and complicated machinerj^ of to-day. Minor emphasis has been given to certain necessarily technical paragraphs by printing these in type of a smaller size than that used for the body of the text.

Site Seminar: Approaches to the Study of Pattern Exploring Pattern in Woven Design: a Comparison of two Seventeenth Century Italian Textiles Melinda Watt This paper explores the differences in both pattern and technical features between two similar woven silk textiles from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The two textiles are seventeenth century Italian woven silks. They have in common an identical brocaded pattern consisting of four floral motifs, two are large and two are small. It is the differences between the two textiles that provoke comparison, more than do their similarities. First, the ground colors are different, as are the ground weaves. Second, the individual brocaded motifs, while identical in detail, are a mirror reflection from one textile to the other. Third, the binding systems employed for the brocaded areas are different.
