Different extracts of these Kalanchoe species have been widely used in traditional medicine. Recently it has been reported that Kalanchoe extracts possess various biological activities viz. antiviral, sedative, antiulcer, immunomodulatory, antileishmanial, CNS depressant, anti-inflammatory, thyroid peroxidase inhibitor, cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, analgesic, anticonvulsant, antimicrobial, inhibition of B cell development, cardiovascular, antihyperglycemic, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, insecticidal and larvicidal activities. Objectives of the work were: 1) use Trichoderma viride to assess whether the use of this endophytic fungus can increase the growth rate of Kalanchoe pinnata, Kalanchoe tubiflora and Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri, plants generally slow in their growth cycle; 2) evaluate if using Trichoderma viride can lead to an increase in vitamin C content in the leaves of Kalanchoe spp.; 3) assess and evaluate how the use of Trichoderma viride allows greater protection of the roots from Pithyum sp. which often affects the roots of these succulents. The two experimental groups in cultivation were: i) group without Trichoderma spp., irrigated with water and substrate previously fertilized; ii) group with Trichoderma viride, irrigated with water and substrate previously fertilized. -

Thesis Phytochemical investigation of two Crassulaceae species: Rhodiola rosea L., the New "Herbal Stress Buster", and Sedum dasyphyllum L. VAN DIERMEN, Daphné Abstract Rhodiola rosea L. (Crassulaceae), the most investigated species of the genus Rhodiola, grows at elevated altitudes in the Arctic and in mountainous regions throughout Europe and Asia, where it is also knows as "Golden root" or "Arctic root". The roots have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to enhance physical and mental performance, improve resistance to high altitude sickness and to treat fatigue, psychological stress and depression. The present work aims at clarifying the pharmacological effects of R. rosea and identifying the active metabolites. The plant was tested on three targets : monoamine oxidase, acetylcholinesterase and oxidative stress. As the roots of R. rosea exhibited interesting activities against the three targets, a phytochemical investigation was undertaken on the plant. An agronomical study was also realised on R. rosea. Another part of this work consisted in studying different Crassulaceae species in order to discover new potential herbal stress buster. Six new flavonols were isolated from Sedum dasyphyllum L. Different formulations from Bryophyllum have been employed for the treatment of several ailments, including infections, gynecological disorders, and chronic diseases, such as diabetes, neurological and neoplastic diseases. Two major families of secondary metabolites have been reported as responsible for these bioactivities: phenolic compounds and bufadienolides. These compounds are found in limited amounts in plants because they are biosynthesized in response to different biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, novel approaches should be undertaken with the aim of achieving the phytochemical valorization of Bryophyllum sp., allowing a sustainable production that prevents from a massive exploitation of wild plant resources. -

Snakebites are a serious problem in public health due to their high morbimortality. Most of snake venoms produce intense local tissue damage, which could lead to temporary or permanent disability in victims. The available specific treatment is the antivenom serum therapy, whose effectiveness is reduced against these effects. Thus, the search for complementary alternatives for snakebite treatment is relevant. There are several reports of the popular use of medicinal plants against snakebites worldwide. In recent years, many studies have been published giving pharmacological evidence of benefits of several vegetal species against local effects induced by a broad range of snake venoms, including inhibitory potential against hyaluronidase, phospholipase, proteolytic, hemorrhagic, myotoxic, and edematogenic activities.
