  • National Standards for Hindi
NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR HINDI Standards for Learning Hindi K-16 in the United States This Hindi K-16 Standards are based on ACTFL’s generic Standards for Foreign Language and has benefitted from the previous language-specific standards for Arabic, Chinese, French, etc. The progress indicators for grades 4, 8, 12 and 16 reflect an ideal sequence of Hindi learning scenario under which students begin their Hindi at kindergarten and continue through college. Since no such ideal Hindi program exists so far, the progress indicators will have to be reconfigured based on the students’ entry point, home background, and learning environment (such as, immersion programs, Sunday schools, regular public schools). In this document, there are sample learning scenarios for different levels of Hindi learners which demonstrate how Hindi standards can be incorporated into performance-based holistic teaching. The national committee of twelve experienced Hindi teachers that has created these standards comes from different schools (public and community-based schools) and universities across the nation. It took about two years to complete this project under the expert guidance of Professor June K. Phillips, who was the Project Director of the generic standards published in 1996. The Hindi Standards for K-16 is an important document that will guide curriculum developers and teachers of Hindi for articulating standards-based curriculum across K-12 and post- secondary levels. It will serve as a road map for standards-based instruction with clear outcome goals in

ANTHEM PRESS INFORMATION SHEET New Poetry in Hindi Nayi Kavita: An Anthology Edited and translated by Lucy Rosenstein Pub Date: September 2004 Category: LITERARY COLLECTIONS / Binding: Hardback Asian Price: £50 / $85 BISAC code: LCO004000 ISBN: 9781843311249 BIC code: DC Extent: 192 pages Rights Held: World Size: 234 x 156mm / 9.2 x 6.1 Description A book that showcases experimentalism in modern Hindi poetry. In 1943 a slim volume of poetry, Tar Saptak, burst onto the Hindi literary scene. It gave voice to seven young poets who were determined to experiment both with the content and form of poetry. Tar Saptak heralded the beginning of Prayogvad (Experimentalism), which in turn became Nayi Kavita (New Poetry). Taken from Nayi Kavita, this parallel text anthology interprets it not as a narrow literary movement but as a modernist tendency still flourishing in Hindi poetry. The collection includes seven poets who first published in one of the Saptaks: Agyeya Muktibodh, Shamsher, Raghuvir Sahay, Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, Kunwar Narain and Kedarnath Singh. This volume also significantly revises the literary map of modern Hindi poetry, demonstrating that, contrary to established opinion, the 1960s and 1970s produced gifted women poets such as Shakunt Mathur, Amrita Bharati and Jyotsna Milan, all of whose work is represented here. Readership: A book for anyone with an interest in poetry. • The 40Th Annual Conference on South Asia (2011)
2011 40th Annual Conference on South Asia Paper Abstracts Center for South Asia University of Wisconsin - Madison Aaftaab, Naheed Claiming Middle Class: Globalization, IT, and exclusionary practices in Hyderabad In this paper, I propose that middle class identity in the IT sector can be read as part of an “identity politics” that claim certain rights and benefits from governmental bodies both at the national and international levels. India’s economic growth since the 1991 liberalization has been attended by the growth of the middle classes through an increase in employment opportunities, such as those in the IT sector. The claims to middle class status are couched in narratives of professional affiliations that shape culturally significant components of middle class identities. The narratives rely on the ability of IT professionals to reconcile the political identities of nationalism while simultaneously belonging to a global work force. IT workers and the industry at large are symbols of India’s entry into the global scene, which, in turn, further reinforces the patriotic and nationalist rhetoric of “Indianness.” This global/national identity, however, exists through exclusionary practices that are evident in the IT sector despite the management’s assertions that the industry’s success is dependent on “merit based” employment practices. Using ethnographic data, I will examine middle class cultural and political claims as well as exclusionary practices in professional settings of the IT industry in order to explore the construction of new forms of identity politics in India. 40th Annual Conference on South Asia, 2011 1 Acharya, Anirban Right To (Sell In) The City: Neoliberalism and the Hawkers of Calcutta This paper explores the struggles of urban street vendors in India especially during the post liberalization era.
