KCG - Portal of Journals
KCG - Portal of Journals http://www.kcgjournal.org/humanity/issue5/parag.php Year-1 | Issue-5 | January-February 2013 Indian English Literature into Film A Journey Literature, as we know, is one of the five fine arts. It is defined by R. J. Rees, as, “writing which expresses and communicates thoughts, feelings and attitudes towards life.”[1] Cinema is the youngest art form. Adaptation, i.e. text into film, is virtually as old as the cinema itself. But while adapting a literary work into a film, which itself is a creative process, it takes so many things to make or break the success and popularity of the original literary work and vice-versa. According to William Walsh “Literature can be read as the chronicle and embodiment of the state and the history of the language.”[2] This statement is aptly applicable to cinema as well. Cinema, in fact, serves the same purpose as literature, though in a bit different and faster way. This paper attempts a critique and evolution of the sub-genre of adaptation studies; in the vibrant inter discipline of literature and film studies, with special reference to the creative adaptation of Indian English texts. Both Indian English literature and Indian cinema, in a sense, are result of colonization of India. Both, born during the British time, transformed Indian studies and students in a big way. They influenced the image of India at the international level. World came to know India as projected by the Indian English Literature and Indian Cinema. Both the genres passed through similar stages of development, of evolution: imitative, reactive and self actualized, but the latter did it faster. -
The Nation State and Modern Sport
TIF - The Nation State and Modern Sport MUKUL KESAVAN August 6, 2021 Follow the flag: A sea of Indian flags at the at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2015 World Cup. | Wikimedia 'National feeling is not something that has been injected into sport by swaggering players, corrupt politicians, and a scheming media looking to boost ratings; it is native to modern sport, something that is built into its historical evolution.' I think I began to think about sport and nationalism a couple of years ago, when the Indian cricket team decided to take the field wearing specially commissioned military fatigue caps. This was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s idea and Virat Kohli, who was captain by then, supported it enthusiastically. The gesture was made in solidarity with the soldiers who had lost their lives at Pulwama. The team donated a substantial sum of money for the welfare of the soldiers’ bereaved families. Dhoni is keen on the military. He is a colonel in the Territorial Army. In the 2019 World Cup, he had to be asked by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to remove regimental insignia from his wicket keeping gloves. In that camouflage-cap match, Dhoni and the Indian team literally embodied George Orwell’s famous description of international sport: "War minus the shooting." Orwell’s phrase has been used so often and so widely that it has become detached from its historical context. It Page 1 www.TheIndiaForum.in August 6, 2021 was prompted by his growing recognition of the political symbolism of sport, as a highly visible tool of nationalism. -
