PageVolume 3 6, Issue 2, November 2009 Page 3 Five named to HES Hall of Fame The University of Kentucky School of Human Environmental Sciences inducted five members to its Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony Oct. 2. This year’s inductees include: The late Mary E. Sweeney was a nationally and internationally renowned home economist and family relations expert. Sweeney earned one of her two master degrees from UK. She was head of the Department of Home Economics in the College of Agriculture and briefly became dean of the department when it became a separate entity in 1916. In 1917, she was appointed to chair of home economics for the U.S. Food Administration in Washington, D.C. In 1920, she became the dean of home economics at Michigan State University. The same year she was named president of the American Home Economics Association. The late Myrtle Weldon came to UK in 1924 to serve as the state leader for the home demonstration program. Starting with only 24 county agents and a state home economics staff, the program grew to 105 county agents, more than 34,000 members of the Kentucky Federation of Homemakers and an estimated 100,000 additional women who had access to the program by her retirement in 1955. During World War II, she worked to promote the Women’s Land Army, which recruited women to fill in on the farm for men who were serving in the military. Shirley Ellis Sheperson received a bachelor’s degree in home economics from UK in 1952. The next year, she became the county extension agent for home economics in Casey County, a position she would hold until 1985. She received numerous awards over the course of her professional career, and she and other family members established the Ellis Family Scholarship at UK. Dedicated to her community, Sheperson helped obtain the former Forkland School to use as a community center in 1972. Her interests in families and genealogy led her to author or co-author several books including “Roots, Trunks and Branches,” “Forkland Heritage: Its People Past and Present 1793-1996,” “The Forgotten Past” and “A Family History Going Back 13 Generations.” Sheperson currently resides in Danville. Margaret Holyfield Potter received a bachelor’s degree in home economics from UK in 1955. She worked in the Department of Home Economics at Framingham State College in Massachusetts. In the department, she held the positions of associate professor and department chair. Throughout her career, she was a freelance consultant for many projects that involved product promotion, feature writing, television production and performance, and recipe development, testing, and contest coordination. Active in Phi Upsilon Omicron, she served in leadership positions at the chapter, district and national levels, eventually being elected as director. While director she served for two years as the chair of the Phi U Educational Foundation. Under her leadership, the foundation established two scholarships and one alumni award. She now lives in Richmond, Va. Janey Knight Thornton received her master’s degree from the University of Kentucky while employed at the Kentucky Department of Education. From there, she accepted the position as food service director for Hardin County Schools. Here, she oversaw building and remodeling of new kitchens and used technology to manage inventories and, production records and to analysis nutrition. She served as president of The School Nutrition Association in 2006. In April, Thornton was appointed Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services in the U.S. Department of Agriculture by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. In this position, she provides policy direction for the Food and Nutrition Service and Pictured left to right: Shirley Sheperson, Janey Knight Thornton and Margaret Potter. the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. Scholarship Donor Making a Difference Throughout their college career, many students greatly depend upon scholarships to pay for their education. Two supporters who provide this opportunity are Dr. Linus Walton and his wife Sarah. Walton recently retired as Associate Dean for Administration in the College of Agriculture. He and his wife established a scholarship in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) in memory of his mother Edith Walton whose encouragement was instrumental in inspiring his education as an agricultural engineer. “I am simply paying back for the good things that I received during my education. It provides a way for me to pass on the good to someone else” explains Walton. The 2009-2010 recipient of the Edith Walton Memorial Scholarship is Danielle Marie Antis, a junior in BAE. “With the financial assistance the scholarship provides, it allows me to be actively involved on campus without the worry of paying for school” describes Antis. Many students share Antis’ viewpoint with regard to privately-funded scholarships. The College awarded nearly $650,000 to over 400 College of Agriculture students to assist with their educational pursuits. Pictured is the recipient of the Edith Walton The 2009-2010 donors and scholarship recipients will be recognized during Memorial Scholarship, Danielle Antis the annual scholarship luncheon at the Marriott Griffin Gate on March 27. with Dr. Linus Walton.
