History of Kentucky Basketball Syllabus Instructor J. Scott Course Overview Covers the history of the University of Kentucky Men’s basketball program, from its Phone inception to the modern day. This includes important coaches, players, teams and games, [Telephone] which helped to create and sustain the winning Wildcat tradition. Oklahoma City – When he was drafted fourth overall by the Seattle Supersonics in the 2008 NBA draft, analysts struggled to come up with a player comparison for him. Marc Jackson compared him to Gary Payton and because of his rebounding ability; the media tabbed Rajon Rondo as the best example of what he could turn into. Still, others thought he was built in the Steve Francis mold. However, it may be the Black Mamba, in terms of intensity and eye- popping athletic ability, who may be the closest and best equivalent when looking at the future of Russell Westbrook. Kobe Bryant is arguably the greatest player the NBA has seen in the last thirty years not named Michael Jordan. He has been the heartbeat of LA's most historic team for almost two decades and has hoisted the Larry O'Brien trophy five separate times. His comments during ESPN Grantland's Basketball Hour were revealing about the level of respect he has for a man who is walking down a similar path. His experience, success, basketball acumen and specifically his relationship with Shaquille O'Neal made him a perfect candidate to judge the maturation of man who is escaping the shadow of an established star.

"I am very glad to know of your interest in the University of Kansas, but as you know, we do not have any special scholarships of any kind for athletes here at the University." Thus opens the standard letter Phog Allen used in the 1930s and 40s to respond to inquiries from prospective basketball players. Gems such as Allen's letter underscore the vast changes in college athletics, basketball in particular, since the 1940s. They're what fascinated me in reading this biography penned by a sportswriter for The Kansas City Star At times I wished Kerkhoff would provide more commentary and analysis on Phog's life than he does, as Kerkhoff tends to leave Allen's comments and actions to interpret themselves. But Allen's colorful statements do provide many entertaining moments in the book. Of the AAU, which Allen regularly attacked for having too much control in amateur athletics, he snapped, "I like the AAU like a fellow likes garlic for dessert." Another time he claimed AAU stood for ''Asinine And Unfair." Even his own players were not spared. Of center B. H. Born, who helped lead Kansas to the championship game in 1953, Phog complained after one game, "He stood around like a Christmas tree, and out of season at that." Apparently, Allen was also willing to stretch the truth for a good yarn, especially to inspire his teams in pre-game and halftime talks.

Not only did UNLV lose four starters off its 2007 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team, but also the top player off the bench, who was the 2006-07 MWC Defensive Player of the Year (Joel Anthony – currently with the NBA’s Miami Heat). The 2007-08 squad was also without 62 percent of the scoring, rebounding and minutes played from the previous year’s team. Kruger also worked his magic with just a 10-man roster and won with a lineup that averaged 6-feet, 4.5-inches tall and whose tallest starter was only 6-foot-7-inches. Kruger, who earned his milestone 400th career win on Feb. 9, 2007, with a 68-51 victory over Colorado State at the Thomas & Mack Center, has led UNLV to back-to-back seasons with at least 27 wins for the first time since 1989-90 and 1990-91. In addition, UNLV has won 34 conference games over the last three seasons (10 in 2005-06, 12 in 2006-07 and 12 in 2007-08), which is the program’s highest three-year total since 1991-94. Longtime collegiate and NBA basketball coach Lon Kruger completed Kruger’s third season at UNLV catapulted the program back onto the his fourth year as the Runnin’ Rebels’ head coach in 2007-08, compiling an national stage.
