Bahr, Ben (Biology & Chemistry) received $600,000 from a U.S. Department of Defense grant on August 21, 2015. Dr. Bahr will study neurotoxins and the brain.

Barnes, Richard (Business), Rebecca Gonzalez (Business), and Xinyan Shi (Business) were awarded a $10,146 grant from UNC General Administration to construct a course titled “Economic, Financial, and Legal Aspects in Business.”

Campos, Nicolette (Accessibility Resource Center), Josphine Chaumba (Social Work and Criminal Justice), and Summer Stanley (Social Work and Criminal Justice) received a $5,000 grant, along with the UNCP Department of Social Work and the Robeson County Health Department, for ATLAS, a mentor program that pairs UNCP students with disabilities with Public Schools of Robeson County students with disabilities. The UNCP students will mentor the PSRC students in self-determination and advocacy skills which will help them when transitioning to college.

D'Arruda, José (Chemistry & Physics) was awarded a $2000 UNC System Challenge Grant Award to support a 2016 NC Science Festival event. The event, entitled History of The Hubble Telescope and The Images That Have Been Captured over 13 Billion Light Years Away, was held on April 12, 2016 and was presented by Dr. John Harrington, the first Native American in space.

---. Received a North Carolina Space Grant for $10,000. This grant will provide funds for faculty and students to do undergraduate student research at UNCP.

---. With Rockingham Community College Energizing Tomorrow’s Workforce: Creating Pathways to Electrical Utility Careers, was awarded a 3-year grant of $200,000 from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education to support training technicians for the electric utility industry.

Falls, Irina (Educational Specialties), Sara Simmons (Educational Leadership and Counseling), Irina Falls (Educational Specialties), Heather Higgins Lynn (Educational Leadership and Counseling), and Rita Hagevik (Biology) received funding of $290,069 from the North Carolina Quality Educators through Staff Development and Training (NC QUEST) program. Dr. Irina Falls will be primary investigator for the grant, entitled “Learning and Literacy through Lesson Study in Middle School.” The project forms a partnership with Public Schools of Robeson County and Richmond County Schools that

41 focuses on the teaching of English Language Arts in targeted middle schools. Awarded March 2015.

Ficklin, Kelly Lynn (Elementary Education) received two $1000 Duke Energy grants to improve STEM instruction at Pembroke Elementary School in the spring of 2016. Grant funding will support a Family Math Night event. UNCP elementary education teacher candidates will work with Pembroke Elementary teachers to plan, promote, and implement a Family STEM Night. The program will include hands-on Technology/ Engineering activities, led by Pembroke Elementary faculty and UNCP teacher education students and designed to increase student, family and community understanding of the North Carolina STEM initiatives.

Flowers, Paul (Chemistry & Physics) received a three-year $159,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The “New Devices and Methods for Microscale Spectroelectrochemistry” grant provides equipment, supplies and stipends for six undergraduate research assistants. Funding period: June 2015-May 2018.

Gainey, Summer Stanley (Social Work and Criminal Justice), Nicolette Campos (Accessibility Resource Center), and Josphine Chaumba (Social Work and Criminal Justice) received a $5,000 grant, along with the UNCP Department of Social Work and the Robeson County Health Department, for ATLAS, a mentor program that pairs UNCP students with disabilities with Public Schools of Robeson County students with disabilities. The UNCP students will mentor the PSRC students in self-determination and advocacy skills which will help them when transitioning to college.

Hagevik, Rita (Biology), Cameron Troutman & Daren Nelson received a $500 grant funded by Duke Energy, for Building STEM Careers through Community Action. The goal of this grant was to spark interest in STEM careers by providing educational information and an opportunity to learn more about STEM careers during two community events: Pembroke Day and the Regional Science Fair, both held at UNCP.

The STEM activities engaged children and their parents in learning about the rock cycle, types of rock and creating their own “pet rock” to take home with them. In addition information and displays about STEM careers were provided. The Science Education Club worked with the Geology Club to provide the “Pet Rock” educational experience. A variety of rocks were used from all parts of the rock cycle, many of which are found in NC and used for a variety of purposes in the state as well as exports to other countries. In essence participants engaged in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities at the same time they learned about STEM careers.

Stremlau, Rose (History/American Indian Studies) began a three-year term on the editorial board of NAIS (the journal of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association), June 2015.

Thomas, William Stewart (Business) chaired the Scotland County Area Relay for Life held on October 2-3. The event raised over $236,000 for the American Cancer Society and brought thousands of local citizens together in the fight against cancer. Dr. Thomas has chaired the event for the past 19 years which has cumulatively raised over $4.3 million dollars.

Thompson, Mark (History) was appointed to the editorial advisory board of North Carolina Historical Review this summer and assumed his duties in the fall of 2015.

Vandermeer, Aaron D. (Music) served as a clinician for the JENerations Jazz Festival. Jazz Education Network (JEN) National Conference, Louisville, KY, in January 2016.

Vela, Richard (English, Theatre, and Foreign Languages) served as Area Chair for Shakespeare on Film and Television and chaired five panels of Shakespearean scholars at the PCA/ACA Conference, in April 2015.

Vest, Jay Hansford C. (American Indian Studies) serves on the editorial board of The Cultural and Literary Nationalism of Fourth World Literature – an international peer reviewed journal published by Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, India.

Walters, Courtney (Academic Support Center) was selected by the Lambda Sigma Society, a national honor society for sophomores, for its Outstanding Advisor Award and was appointed to the National Board for a three-year term.

Warren, Jeffrey M. (Education) is serving as a member of the Outstanding Scholar Review Committee of the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).

Whitt, Susan (Library) continues to serve on the City of Lumberton’s Community Relations Commission by assisting in the planning of the city’s Christmas Flotilla; she also serves as a board member on the Resources and Technical Services Section of the North Carolina Library Association.

Winters, Bryan (HPER) hosted the Spring 2015 Teacher Education Fair on March 25. Representatives from 33 public school districts and charter schools from throughout NC and SC participated in this event.

Bumin, Kirill (Political Science & Public Administration) and Kevin Freeman (Political Science & Public Administration) accompanied several students to participate in the Southern Regional Model Arab League conference, hosted by Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. The team of 11 students returned home with five individual awards, won by Jordin Dickerson, Jeremy Jacobs, Logan John, Brian Edwards, and Andrew Yarborough. This is the most awards that the Model United Nations team has received at a conference.

Chae, Ki Byung (Education) is mentoring Kathryn Kelly and Jacob Blackstock, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program graduate students, for their research projects on the topic of Mental Health Needs of Rural Students. Both students are collecting survey data leading to the creation of an assessment instrument.

McDonald, Angela (Education) mentored and co-presented with Kathryn Kelly, a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program graduate student, on the topic of sexual minority youth.

---. Mentored Heather Bahramand, a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program graduate student, in the development of a poster presentation on the topic of Alexithymia and Attachment Theory.

Scott, Marisa (Education) mentored Honor College students, Madison Wilcox, a junior Sports and Exercise Science major, and Ian Fennell, a freshman Special Education major, on March 18 at the First Annual Sports Empowerment Program, which was hosted by UNCP. This day-long event brought 30 students with disabilities from Lumberton Sr. High School to campus for a day of sports skills training as well as an inclusive softball game. In addition to her faculty position, Dr. Scott also serves as the Coordinator for the Undergraduate Program in Special Education. The Teacher Cadet Program from Lumberton Sr. High, the Early College Program of the Public Schools of Robeson County, and the UNCP Student Volunteers, coordinated by Dalton Hoffer from the Office of Community and Civic Engagement, served as “buddies” and teammates for the students with disabilities.

Warren, Jeffrey M. (Education) continues to mentor Robyn Hale, Professional School Counseling Program graduate student, in the implementation of a study funded by a $2500 grant from the School of Graduate Studies and Research designed to support a

59 student research project about non-cognitive factors. Ms. Hale was recently awarded the prestigious National Board of Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship for her research supported by this grant.

Ziemnowicz, Christopher (Business) is mentoring and assisting the UNCP student team members with their video and written report that was submitted as UNCP's entry to the 2015 NIBS International Business Plan Challenge.
