Porter ‘71 FALL 2018 - HIGHLIGHTS 01 Message from the PRESIDENT AMDG Dear Friends, The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education. The “Experience” and the “More Than” are closely related to Br. Jim Boynton’s article in this issue of Highlights, in which he profiles our alumni who are Jesuits in formation. The connection is formation. When the townspeople of Messina came to Ignatius Loyola in 1548, they asked if he would start a school for their young men. They told Ignatius that they wanted their young men to be formed in the same way that the Society of Jesus formed its priests and brothers. And so, for 470 years now, the Society of Jesus has been forming young men. The foundation of that formation is based on how Jesuits themselves are formed. The cornerstone of the foundation is twofold: A relationship with the Lord as companion and friend, and following him in service of the Kingdom. Times and cultures change and shift. Over its 141-year history, U of D Jesuit has adapted the formation of young men to fit the signs of the times. Our culture today is more godless. Affiliation with and participation in traditional expressions of Christian faith has declined. For these reasons, the formation of young men in our school must be as strong as ever. Here are a few examples of how we continue to adapt to the times. We revised our theology curriculum to include more Jesuit and Ignatian studies and exposure to Jesuit spirituality. To that point, Br. Boynton and I teach a class in Ignatian Prayer and Spirituality. This year we introduced a chaplaincy program in athletics and in band. A student on the team is the chaplain, leading the team in a prayer service before games, and in prayer before practices. Br. Boynton trains the chaplains, observes them, and gives them feedback. We are exploring how Eucharist and liturgies might be introduced into smaller group settings. While we would continue to have our all school Masses, these smaller groups pose the possibility of more intimacy and participation. The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education. The Seminar studies topics pertaining to the spiritual doctrine and practice of Jesuits, especially American Jesuits, and communicates the results to the members of the provinces. Young 2009 Abstract This dissertation examines how public history and historic preservation have changed during the twentieth century by examining the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1683, Germantown is one of America’s most historic neighborhoods, with resonant landmarks related to the nation’s political, military, industrial, and cultural history. Efforts to preserve the historic sites of the neighborhood have resulted in the presence of fourteen historic sites and house museums, including sites owned by the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the City of Philadelphia. Germantown is also a neighborhood where many of the ills that came to beset many American cities in the twentieth century are easy to spot. The 2000 census showed that one quarter of its citizens live at or below the poverty line. Germantown High School recently made national headlines when students there attacked a popular teacher, causing severe injuries. Many businesses and landmark buildings now stand shuttered in community that no longer can draw on the manufacturing or retail economy it once did. Germantown’s twentieth century has seen remarkably creative approaches to contemporary problems using historic preservation at their core.

    MODEL A FORD HALL OF FAME Model A Ford Model A Museum Gilmore Car Museum Campus Hickory Corners, Michigan Welcome to the Model A Ford Hall of Fame The Hall of Fame exists to recognize the people who developed, produced, sold and maintained the Model A Ford vehicles. It also recognizes the many people who developed supporting and derivative tools, accessories and machinery; authored and published articles, magazines and books; and organized and led national organizations devoted to the Model A Ford. The Hall of Fame is located inside the Model A Ford Museum. It is an evolving element within the museum and is expected to grow in size and importance with each new induction ceremony. FIRST INDUCTEE Henry Ford Inducted 2014 HENRY FORD Nominating Narrative Nearly Five Million Model A Fords were produced between 1927 and 1932 by the Ford Motor Company.The father of the company, the man with the concept and the drive, was Henry Ford. Born on July 30, 1863 in Dearborn during the Civil War. He grew up with an interest in mechanical things as a farm boy and as an electric power plant operator for the Edison Electric Company in Detroit. He built a one cylinder engine, running it over the kitchen sink with his wife, Clara Bryant Ford, acting as the carburetor with a eye-dropper filled with gasoline. He built an early race car that beat the premier racer of the day. Three times he organized a company to manufacture automobiles for sale. Twice the companies failed, but on the third try he sold his first car just as the company was running out of money.
