RASC Observing Committee Explore the Universe Observing Certificate Second Edition Explore the Universe Observing Certificate Welcome to the Explore the Universe Observing Certificate Program. This program is designed to provide the observer with a well-rounded introduction to the night sky visible from North America. Using this observing program is an excellent way to gain knowledge and experience in astronomy. Experienced observers find that a planned observing session results in a more satisfying and interesting experience. This program will help introduce you to amateur astronomy and prepare you for other more challenging certificate programs such as the Messier and Finest NGC. The program covers the full range of astronomical objects. Here is a summary: Observing Objective Requirement Available Constellations and Bright Stars 12 24 The Moon 16 32 Solar System 5 10 Deep Sky Objects 12 24 Double Stars 10 20 Total 55 110 In each category a choice of objects is provided so that you can begin the certificate at any time of the year. In order to receive your certificate you need to observe a total of 55 of the 110 objects available. Here is a summary of some of the abbreviations used in this program Instrument V – Visual (unaided eye) B – Binocular T – Telescope V/B - Visual/Binocular B/T - Binocular/Telescope Season Season when the object can be best seen in the evening sky between dusk. and midnight. Objects may also be seen in other seasons. Description Brief description of the target object, its common name and other details. ARTHUR - INFORMATION FOR RELEASE: Sunday, March 1, 1964 Sarasota--New College will have as its eighth lecturer in the New Perspectives in Science series Thursday at 8:00 p.m., Dutch born Dr. Peter van de Kamp, Director of the Sproul Observatory, swarthmore College. Dr. van de Kamp, the second astronomer in the series, approaches his field from a new viewpoint for the lecture at College Hall. He said that his talk will be about astronomy as a liberal art, "and by its very nature, peculiarly adapted to removing any artificial or imaginary bar- riers between the so-called sciences and the so-called liberal arts. Attendance at the lectures is by season registration although some single evening registrations are accepted. Born at Kampen in the Netherlands, Dr. van de Kamp was educated at the University of Utrecht where he studied astronomy, mathematics, and physics. Later, he obtained doctoral degrees at the University of California and the University of Groningen. Shortly after completing his education in the Netherlands, he came to this country to work at the McCormick Observatory at the University of Virginia and at the Lick Observatory at the University of California. The Swarthmore observatory has one of the largest astronomical instruments of its kind. Dr. van de Kamp has taught or lectured a ·t many colleges in several countries. But how can we know if any really exist? We devote this issue of The Universe in the Classroom to the search for planets around other stars. What is the difference between a planet and a star? Why do we think there might be planets around other stars? Why is it so hard to see planets around other stars? If we can't see them, how can we find out if there are planets around other stars? Have any planets been detected from stellar wobbles? The Case of Barnard's Star Are there other ways to detect planets? Can we see the large disks of gas and dust around other stars out of which planets form? What about reports of planets around pulsars? Activity: Center of Mass Demonstration What is the difference between a planet and a star? Stars are huge luminous balls of gas powered by nuclear reactions at their centers. The enormously high temperatures and pressures in the core of a star force atoms of hydrogen to fuse together and become helium atoms, releasing tremendous amounts of energy in the process. Planets are much smaller with core temperatures and pressures too low for nuclear fusion to occur. Thus they emit no light of their own. -

BRAS has lost another member, Bart Bennett, who joined BRAS after Chris Desselles gave a talk on Astrophotography to the Cajun Clickers Computer Club (CCCC) in January of 2016, Bart became the President of CCCC at the same time I became president of BRAS. The Clickers are shocked at his sudden death via heart attack. Both organizations will miss Bart. His obituary is posted online here: http://www.rabenhorst.com/obituary/sidney-barton-bart-bennett/ Last month’s meeting, at LIGO, was a success, even though there was not much solar viewing for the public due to clouds and rain for most of the afternoon. BRAS had a table inside the museum building, where Ben and Craig used material from the Night Sky Network for the public outreach. -

Some have lost almost everything in the flood, Some have lost a little, and some have lost nothing... Our hearts go out to all who have lost, and thanks to all who have reached out to help others. Due to the flooding, last month’s meeting, at LIGO, was cancelled. The September meeting will be on the 12th at the Observatory, which did not receive any water during the flood, thus BRAS suffered no loss of property. As part of our Outreach effort. If anyone you know has any telescope and/or equipment that was in water during the flood, let us know and we will try to help clean, adjust, etc. the equipment. On September 2nd (I am a little late with this message), Dr. Alan Stern, the New Horizons Primary Investigator, gave two talks at LSU. The morning talk was for Astronomy graduate students, and was a little technical. -
