4 The Lakes a source of life

Water is precious - and it‘s getting rarer. The 67 lakes of the Salzkammergut are full of both drinking quality water and their own history. In this edition of The Salzkammergut Magazine we introduce three of these valuable native waters. Photo: Salzburger Land, Fuschlsee

5 Lakes of the Salzkammergut

In the Salzkammergut we are constantly aware of this valuable source of life: omnipresent, it characterises the annual spectacle of nature.

In the spring: the streams flow into the lakes and the barren areas return to a rich green. In the summer: swimmers frolic in the lake and the fish swim by. In the autumn: the Lake Offensee, in the holiday region Traunsee, is morning mist drifts over the water, one of 67 refreshing lakes and the flora and fauna prepare for in the Salzkammergut with

They adorn the landscape, delight the eye and refresh the mind: they are the lakes of the Salzkammergut. There are 67 of them in total, and with their abundance of water, they are not only beautiful to look at they are very precious. They are filled with drinking quality water. A treasure that is becoming ever scarcer. The world‘s population is growing, the supply of fresh water is not. From a total of 35 million cubic kilometres of fresh water worldwide, only around 213,000 are easily accessible to humans in the form of lakes and

Imposing and loud. The waterfall in the Plötz in Ebenau has a drop of 50 metres, and is surrounded by five historical mills from the 17th and 18th centuries. Although the mill wheels may have stopped turning more than 50 years ago, and there‘s moss growing on the roofs, some things are the same: the middle Rettenbach still crashes into the depths. Suddenly you feel quite small in the impact zone at the lower end of the waterfall. A small distance from the Plötz, between the Wiestal reservoir and Strubklammsee, is the Strubklamm, which is also a force to be reckoned with. Here the Almbach is forced through a narrow gorge. Pure Salzkammergut The Long Distance Trail, the first in Austria, connects the three federal states of the Salzkammergut: Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria. “We simply want to show the Salzkammergut in all its glory“ says Michael Spechtenhauser, Managing Director of Salzkammergut Tourismus Marketing GmbH, the umbrella organisation for the tourism regions in the Salzkammergut. “We didn‘t See Hallstatt from above! The buttons are always made of washable natural materials such as mother-of-pearl or horn.

The button strip ends at the bottom of the “Sleeping farmer“ Jean Francois Milet / 1866 breast bone. The typical shield shaped “Riegerl“ forms the end and provides space for monogram embroidery.

“The Sound of Music“ is one of the most watched films of all time. As a result, the von Trapp family, the Salzkammergut and Salzburg are often mentioned in one breath. This classic film, which won five Oscars, has not lost any of its magic. Each year some 300,000 people visit the original sites shown in the film. Nearly two-thirds of these come from the USA, Great Britain, or Ireland. They want to see with their own eyes where the family von Trapp sang famous songs such as “Do-Re-Mi“, “My Favourite Things“ or the alleged Austrian national anthem “Edelweiß“. Many of them also want to treat themselves to the delicacies mentioned in the songs (such as “Crisp Photo: Constantin Film, J. Betke apple strudels“ or even “Schnitzel with noodles“ ) and to get to know the Austrian way of life. Filming for “The Trapp Family - A Life of Music“ at Schloss Kogl in St. Georgen im Attergau.

“I‘ve been running around the workshop since I was a small boy. There was never any question that I would do anything else“, says Franz Bittner. Bad Ischl loves the Lehár Festival In the summer Emperor Franz Joseph will once again share his imaginary reign over Bad Ischl with Franz Lehár. From 15 July to 03 September the Kaiserstadt will be dominated by the Lehár Festival 2017. It's Michael Lakner's last season as artistic director, and he presents, among other things, the masterpiece of the Austro-Hungarian composer "Die lus- tige Witwe" (The Merry Widow).

Thomas Zisterer as Toni in "Season in Salzburg"

When Hanna, a rich widowed from the country, and Count Danilo reignite their once-oppressed love at the Pontevedro Ball held at the Parisian Embassy, the hearts of all the operetta friends beat faster. "The Merry Widow" by Franz Lehár is the most successful work of the famous composer. Since the premiere in 1905 and the death of Lehár in 1948, this ever-changing comedy of love has been performed more than 300,000 times.

Notable names such as Reinhard Alessandri as Danilo, and Regina Riel as Hanna Glawari, accompanied by Verena Barth-Jurca as Valencienne, and Clemens Kerschbaumer as Rossilloun, underpin the theatrical highlight of the Lehár Festival 2017 in Bad Ischl. Under the artistic responsibility of Michael Lakner this masterpiece is conducted by László Gyürker.

A second piece presented by Michael Lakner is "Saison in Salzburg", a revue operetta of the finest, in which Monika Rebholz, Alexander Kaimbacher, Theresa Grabner-Ertl, and Thomas Cisterer enthrall the audience with their Photo: fotohofer.at

A perfect complement to the two popular pieces is Emerich Kálmán's semi-staged play "Kaisern Josephine". Vincent Schirrmacher, celebrating a comeback in Bad Ischl where he once laid the foundation for his brilliant career, will play Napoleon. He will compete for the vocal favour of the enchanting Miriam Portmann, who takes the role of Josephine. The Kongress & TheaterHaus in Bad Ischl

The 2017 festival promises to be a true firework of popular pieces and successful performers to delight the operetta friends of Bad Ischl. This is Michael Lakner's last year before he devotes himself to artistic direction on the stage in Baden, and hands over the festival to his successor Thomas Enzinger.

Once again he will demonstrate with his work why the "Bad Ischler" are so in love with their operettas.

The small Falkenstein church is located next to the cave in which St. Wolfgang made his bed. The Falkenstein had a cult significance for many centuries. The strange stone formations there indicate that the Celts, and the early Germanic tribes, worshipped their gods here. The split rock, which is located in the church (a so-called “crawl- stone”) was formally the centre of a fertility and birth cult. It was not until much later, in Christian times, that references to St. Wolfgang appeared in the local history.

Each Pass (group) performs well choreographed manoeuvres with figures of eight, circles, and spirals. In short they are a sight to be seen.

Tradition rooted in Ebensee It is believed that the Glöcklerlauf was developed from a number of different elements. On the one hand from the “Glöckeln” (also “Klöckeln”) which means knocking: a tradition where they would dress up and go from house to house, knocking on the door collecting gifts. On the other hand, there are also important roots in the Perchtenläufe in alpine areas. The Glöcklerlauf in Ebensee was first mentioned in writing around 1850. From there, as a Photo: TVB Ferienregion Traunsee/Karl Heinz Ruber result of Ebensee people relocating to other areas, the custom spread wider. www.dachstein-alpentrophy.com 79 Ice Diving at Lake Attersee Head below the ice

Roughly once in every three years, parts of Lake Attersee (in the Attersee-Salzkammergut region) freeze over in the winter. This is when the brave pick up their diving equipment and head below the ice for a really “cool” experience under water.

You enter the water through a hole in the ice in the certain knowledge that you won't be able to resurface immediately. This gives ice diving a special kick. Enthusiasm and fascination resonate in Bockis' (Gregor Bockmüller) voice as he talks about ice diving in Lake Attersee (in the Attersee-Salzkammergut region). For ten years now he's run the “Under Pressure” diving school in Weyregg am Attersee. On average he gets to accompany divers under the ice every third year. “The last time Lake Attersee completely froze over was in 1964. Now only parts of it freeze over, and those not every year” he explains. Areas that are sheltered from the wind and sun are the only places where the ice forms here on the largest lake in Austria. The most usual place for ice to form is in the bay between Unterach and Weißenbach

at the southern end of the lake. Photo: N autilus

80 Mentally strong Ice diving requires good planning and technical preparation. It is quite different from a normal dive, explains Bockmüller. The divers need diving training, and at least two teams on site - one under water, one on the ice. They communicate using ropes - especially in emergencies. “In the ideal world, you'd have a third team on stand-by, suited up and ready to go. What's more you need a third of your air reserve to resurface, normally it Photo: Harald Hois is only a quarter. That's the way to emerge from under the ice blanket without stress”, says Bockmüller. Under the water it's cold - with a maximum four degrees Celsius - and the cold slows you down. Not having the ability to emerge at any time requires a certain mental strength.

Watch the air under water When the conditions are right about 45 people get to take part in diving courses organised by the Under Pressure diving school. A rare chance to discover the underwater world of Lake Attersee below the ice. “When the lake freezes, we offer three dates. They are always full” says Bockmüller. The cradle of the salt princes Bad Ischl's history as a spa and recreation centre began in 1821, when the Viennese doctor Franz Wirer came to Bad Ischl to learn about the successful cures of the saline work’s physician, Dr. Josef Götz, who had been treating ill salt miners with brine baths. 89 LEARNING TO SKI On your marks, get SET, GO! What should you look out for when your child learns to ski? Here are ten tips to help ensure a successful start on skis.

1 At what age should children start skiing? The earlier a child begins, the easier it is for them to learn the new movements required. They should be steady on their feet which, on average, is from the age of three or four. Be aware of your child’s needs and avoid overwhelming them.

2 How can you make their start easier? Children who have previously tried sports with a focus on balance and movement are more likely to find it easier. Dancing or gymnastics, for example, are good.

3 Can parents teach their own children to ski? Developing a shared love of skiing is a good reason for teaching your children to ski. If you, as a parent, are a good skier, with sufficient experience, good nerves, and good teaching skills, then this is one way for children to learn to ski.

91 A passion for skiing achstein West Bad Goisern/Marc Schwarz (4) Bad Goisern/Marc Schwarz Ö D achstein West Photos: AS K

The people who live in the heart of the Alps don't hibernate in the winter. The call of the beautiful white slopes is just too tempting. Skiing is, and always will be, the number one winter sport in Austria (especially in the Salzkammergut).

Most children start skiing when they are only three or four years old. In order for these little snow bunnies to become good skiers, or even successful racers like Anna Veith or Marcel Hirscher, they need training. Most ski resorts have a ski club, where a team of trainers (including experienced ski instructors or former racers) work with the support of enthusiastic parents to develop the next generation. Everyone is fully motivated, every free minute is used for training. When the lifts open at 09:00, the children are always the first on the slopes - full of enthusiasm.

“The most important thing is to learn good ski technique ... in all conditions: in deep snow, over moguls, through gates, and in racing”, say Klaus and Daniela Kain from the ski club ASKÖ Dachstein West Bad Goisern. “It's particularly important that the children and teenagers enjoy skiing. We want to develop a passion for skiing and a good team spirit in a fun environment. We're all enthusiastic skiers, and we want to pass that on to the kids.”

92 Where the young ski heroes train Good training facilities can have a big influence on success: The new, dedicated training and race course, built on the Hornspitz in Gosau (ski region Dachstein West), is available exclusively to the ski clubs. It provides an ideal place for the next generation of ski-racers to train. “It goes without saying that we want to promote up-and- coming skiers”, says chairman Alfred Bruckschlögl. There is obvious pride in role models like Andrea Limbacher, the world ski-cross champion, who also trained here.

Training centre Salzkammergut A child's potential to be a racer can usually be determined in early school age: talent, a love of action, and the desire to improve are all important facets. In ski races like the Dachstein Rally, where local ski clubs compete against each other, they learn how tenths of seconds can have a big impact on trophies and placings. These races give the children a taste of the racing circuit - professional organisation, high energy environment, well prepared equipment, all supported by enthusiastic parents and coaches.

Dachstein Rally Race day: the buzz at the start is full of small talk and laughter. The trainers provide last minute advice, the equipment is checked, and the skis get a last minute wax. As well as suitable skis, closer, it's time for the racers to take off their warm ski- you need a good pair of ski boots: they should fit well and jackets and go to the start hut in their race suit.
