FUTURE WORLD(S): A Critique of Disney's EPCOT and Creating a Futuristic Curriculum by ALAN BOWERS (Under the Direction of Daniel Chapman) ABSTRACT In my dissertation inquiry, I explore the need for utopian based curriculum which was inspired by Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center. Theoretically building upon such works regarding utopian visons (Bregman, 2017, e.g., Claeys 2011;) and Disney studies (Garlen and Sandlin, 2016; Fjellman, 1992), this work combines historiography and speculative essays as its methodologies. In addition, this project explores how schools must do the hard work of working toward building a better future (Chomsky and Foucault, 1971). Through tracing the evolution of EPCOT as an idea for a community that would “always be in the state of becoming” to EPCOT Center as an inspirational theme park, this work contends that those ideas contain possibilities for how to interject utopian thought in schooling.

  • He Original Vision of EPCOT
CASE STUDY e Original Vision of EPCOT Many people know Walt Disney for his empire of Disneyland, Disney World, and Disney cartoons. Beyond creang new industries in animaon and amusement parks in his life:me, Disney also influenced American society in other ways. For example, during the 1950s, he explored the ideas of space exploraon and space travel in several Disneyland TV shows, which helped create strong public support for the burgeoning U.S. space program. Disney also influenced how people think about sustainable ci:es. His last film presented a bold vision for a concept called the “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”, otherwise known as EPCOT. EPCOT was an idealized city, where people would live, work and play. Building on familiar ideas of the :me, EPCOT evokes the European concept of Garden Ci:es and the popular World Fairs. A grand challenge The vision for EPOCT was first presented in October 1966 to the American public on naonal television as part of the weekly Disneyland series. In his film, Disney’s vision is structured in three parts that correspond to the first three phases of the foresight process: Perspec:ve, Opportunity, and Solu:on. In the first sec:on, the narrator presents a brief history of Disney’s work, quo:ng experts and establishing credibility with the audience—all of which offers perspec:ve to the viewers. A good vision embodies the beliefs and values of the :me, and it was no different with EPCOT. For example, the city locaon was deliberately placed at the intersec:on of two major highways, just as the American interstate system was flourishing and family road trips were becoming popular.

Zach helps drive the vision and design execution for all Imagineering efforts at Walt Disney World Resort. With Disney’s largest resort approaching its 50th anniversary, Zach’s team is ushering in an impressive slate of enhancements, including new magic to the major transformation of EPCOT – the most ambitious theme park undertaking in Disney’s recent history. Zach joined Walt Disney Imagineering in 2004 where he worked on design concepts for Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, and Disney California Adventure Park. He subsequently partnered on the research, planning strategy, and successful relaunch of Disney California Adventure Park; and contributed to the planning and development for Shanghai Disney Resort. Over the course of his career, Zach has led teams in charge of master planning and developing our slate of projects for each global destination – marrying creative vision and business strategy into projects our teams execute across the world. With a strong sense of curiosity and wonder, Zach believes that inspiration can come from anywhere. He was first compelled by the magic of Disney parks during a family trip to Walt Disney World shortly after EPCOT opened. “So much of what Disney creates sparks ideas that last a lifetime. For me it was seeing the power design has to capture ideas, optimism, inspiration and storytelling that drew me to the study of architecture. And eventually a career at the center of where magic is made.” Zach graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and received his Master of Architecture from Princeton University.

U S A, 2009 Set in the late 1930's, The Caretaker 3D is about the man who maintained the 4000 light bulbs which once outlined the HOLLYWOODLAND sign at night. A high profile period project that reflects how Hollywood films reach out to the world, The Caretaker 3D stars Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke as the mystical custodian. Waking Sleeping Beauty Directed by Don Hahn 86 min. U S A, 2009 Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairytale. It is a story of clashing egos, out of control budgets, escalating tensions… and one of the most extraordinary creative periods in animation history. Director Don Hahn and producer Peter Schneider, key players at Walt Disney Studios Feature Animation department during the mid1980s, offer a behind—the—magic glimpse of the turbulent times the Animation Studio was going through and the staggering output of hits that followed over the next ten years. Artists polarized between the hungry young innovators and the old guard who refused to relinquish control, mounting tensions due to a string of box office flops, and warring studio heads create the backdrop for this fascinating story told with a unique and candid perspective from those that were there. Through interviews, internal memos, home movies, and a cast of characters featuring Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Roy Disney, alongside an amazing array of talented artists that includes Don Bluth, John Lasseter, and Tim Burton, Waking Sleeping Beauty shines a light on Disney Animation’s darkest hours, greatest joys and its improbable renaissance.

  • A Queer Investigation of the Broadwayfication of Disney the Term
A Beauty But a Funny Girl: A Queer Investigation of the Broadwayfication of Disney The term “Disneyfication” often implies that substance, edge, and thematic depth have been removed and replaced with childish, censored, and heteronormative story lines, in the form of mindless spectacle. Politically, the term implies values which range from “simplistically rightist- moderately conservative to those who barely tolerate Disney, [to] cryptofascist for those who perceive his work as insidious, even dangerous.” (Douglas, xi) Therefore, to refer to the period in the mid-1990's, when Disney acquired real estate in Times Square and opened musicals on Broadway, as the “Disneyfication of Broadway” is to imply an invasion of a corporate, heteronormative culture into a Broadway culture which is historiographically represented as a sophisticated, leftist refuge for the outsiders of American culture, particularly the LGBTQ community. However, in Making Things Perfectly Queer, Alexander Doty asserts that “unless the text is about queers ...the queerness of most mass culture texts is less an essential, waiting-to-be-discovered property than the result of acts of production or reception.” (xi) Thus, this paper traces the production and reception of the Disney property Beauty and the Beast from animated film to the Broadway stage in order to uncover the ways in which its creators utilized a traditional musical theatre form to present an anti-essentialist treatment of gender and sexuality in American culture to the mainstream public. I refer to the influence of musical theatre culture on Walt Disney Company films as its “Broadwayfication.” Since one of the major deterrents of a queer reading of Disney musicals is the “Disney” brand name, my goal in justifying my own queer reading of Beauty and the Beast is to bring this musical out of the “closeted” categories of code, camp, and connotation and to provide another voice for the queer community.
