  • Siemens Technology at the New Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Siemens Technology at the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Lake Buena Vista, FL – Since 1937, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs have been entertaining audiences of all ages. As of May 28, 2014, the story found a new home within the largest expansion at the Magic Kingdom® Park. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, along with a host of new attractions, shows and restaurants now call New Fantasyland home. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, an exciting family coaster, features a forty-foot drop and a series of curves that send guests seated in mine cars swinging and swaying through the hills and caves of the enchanted forest. As part of the systems used to manage the operation of this new attraction, Walt Disney Imagineering chose Siemens to help automate many of the attraction‟s applications. Thanks to Siemens innovations, Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey entertain the guests while Siemens technologies are hard at work throughout the infrastructure of the attraction. This includes a host of Siemens‟ systems to ensure that the attraction runs safely and smoothly so that the mine cars are always a required distance from each other. Siemens equipment also delivers real-time information to the Cast Members operating the attraction for enhanced safety, efficiency and communication. The same Safety Controllers, SINAMICS safety variable frequency drives and Scalance Ethernet switches are also found throughout other areas of the new Fantasyland such as the new Dumbo the Flying Elephant®, and Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid attractions. And Siemens Fire and Safety technologies are found throughout Cinderella Castle.

  • Disney and His Worlds
DISNEY AND HIS WORLDS Disney and his Worlds is a thorough overview of what is by now quite a large literature on the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author looks at Walt Disney’s life and how his biography has been constructed; the Walt Disney Company in the years after his death; and the writings of various commentators on the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks: whether they are harbingers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; the nature of the parks as tourism; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks is central but links with the presentation of Walt Disney’s biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development, and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic. In the process, the book questions the assumption that the parks are sites of postmodern sensibility. Disney films, merchandizing and theme parks are one of the defining features of our times and one of the more effective elements in American cultural imperialism. It is impossible to imagine an encyclopedic sociology of contemporary culture that did not devote at least a chapter to Disney and his Worlds. In particular the parks are often employed as examples in areas like cultural studies, the sociology of postmodernism, tourism and leisure studies, while Walt Disney and his organization are important to the area of organization studies.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. FUTURE WORLD(S): A Critique of Disney's EPCOT and Creating a Futuristic Curriculum by ALAN BOWERS (Under the Direction of Daniel Chapman) ABSTRACT In my dissertation inquiry, I explore the need for utopian based curriculum which was inspired by Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center. Theoretically building upon such works regarding utopian visons (Bregman, 2017, e.g., Claeys 2011;) and Disney studies (Garlen and Sandlin, 2016; Fjellman, 1992), this work combines historiography and speculative essays as its methodologies. In addition, this project explores how schools must do the hard work of working toward building a better future (Chomsky and Foucault, 1971). Through tracing the evolution of EPCOT as an idea for a community that would “always be in the state of becoming” to EPCOT Center as an inspirational theme park, this work contends that those ideas contain possibilities for how to interject utopian thought in schooling.

  • He Original Vision of EPCOT
CASE STUDY e Original Vision of EPCOT Many people know Walt Disney for his empire of Disneyland, Disney World, and Disney cartoons. Beyond creang new industries in animaon and amusement parks in his life:me, Disney also influenced American society in other ways. For example, during the 1950s, he explored the ideas of space exploraon and space travel in several Disneyland TV shows, which helped create strong public support for the burgeoning U.S. space program. Disney also influenced how people think about sustainable ci:es. His last film presented a bold vision for a concept called the “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”, otherwise known as EPCOT. EPCOT was an idealized city, where people would live, work and play. Building on familiar ideas of the :me, EPCOT evokes the European concept of Garden Ci:es and the popular World Fairs. A grand challenge The vision for EPOCT was first presented in October 1966 to the American public on naonal television as part of the weekly Disneyland series. In his film, Disney’s vision is structured in three parts that correspond to the first three phases of the foresight process: Perspec:ve, Opportunity, and Solu:on. In the first sec:on, the narrator presents a brief history of Disney’s work, quo:ng experts and establishing credibility with the audience—all of which offers perspec:ve to the viewers. A good vision embodies the beliefs and values of the :me, and it was no different with EPCOT. For example, the city locaon was deliberately placed at the intersec:on of two major highways, just as the American interstate system was flourishing and family road trips were becoming popular.

Zach Riddley Walt Disney World Resort Portfolio Executive Walt Disney Imagineering @TheZachRiddley An architect by trade, Zach applies a narrative-led treatment to the design and development of Disney’s experiences at Walt Disney World Resort. Zach helps drive the vision and design execution for all Imagineering efforts at Walt Disney World Resort. With Disney’s largest resort approaching its 50th anniversary, Zach’s team is ushering in an impressive slate of enhancements, including new magic to the major transformation of EPCOT – the most ambitious theme park undertaking in Disney’s recent history. Zach joined Walt Disney Imagineering in 2004 where he worked on design concepts for Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, and Disney California Adventure Park. He subsequently partnered on the research, planning strategy, and successful relaunch of Disney California Adventure Park; and contributed to the planning and development for Shanghai Disney Resort. Over the course of his career, Zach has led teams in charge of master planning and developing our slate of projects for each global destination – marrying creative vision and business strategy into projects our teams execute across the world. With a strong sense of curiosity and wonder, Zach believes that inspiration can come from anywhere. He was first compelled by the magic of Disney parks during a family trip to Walt Disney World shortly after EPCOT opened. “So much of what Disney creates sparks ideas that last a lifetime. For me it was seeing the power design has to capture ideas, optimism, inspiration and storytelling that drew me to the study of architecture. And eventually a career at the center of where magic is made.” Zach graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and received his Master of Architecture from Princeton University.
