Münzel Institute of Prehistory and Archaeology of the Middle Ages, Archaeozoology Laboratory, University of Tübingen, Germany - [email protected] SUMMARY: This poster discusses the seasonality of mammoth hunting in the Ach Valley of the Swabian Jura during the Early Upper Palaeolithic. The aging of the infantile mammoth remains of two cave sites, the Geissenklösterle and the Hohle Fels, are discussed. Some of the infant mammoth bones bear cut marks sug- gesting an anthropogenic origin. In all three main occupation layers of the Geissenklösterle (AH I: Gravettian, AH II: Upper Aurignacian, AH III: Lower Aurignacian) as well as in the Gravettian layers of the Hohle Fels infantile mammoth remains were found, indicating that mammoth hunting took place repeatedly in spring and early summer. 1. Winfried Hanold verfasste ein Faltblatt mit Stadtrundgang durch den historischen Stadtkern Schelklingens, welches im Stadtmuseum ausliegt. RADIOCARBON DATES FROM HOHLE FELS CAVE (ALB-DONAU-KREIS / D) AND THE PASSAGE FROM AURIGNACIAN TO GRAVETTIAN Hohle Fels (Alb-Donau-Kreis / D) is a large cave (c. 6000 m³) on the southern margin of the Ach Valley in the Swabian Jura (fig. 1). The cave is a key site for the Swabian Palaeolithic and yielded extensive assemblages from all Upper Palaeolithic facies present in the region, namely the Aurignacian (Conard / Bolus 2006; 2003), the Gravettian (Taller / Conard 2016; Conard / Moreau 2004; Floss / Kieselbach 2004) and the Magdalenian (Taller 2014). The Gravettian of the site is extensive with more than 36,000 lithic artefacts and a comprehensive assem- blage of organic artefacts and ornaments. The Gravettian specimens come from the three layers IIb, IIc and IIcf. Layers IId and IIe have been called »transitional« (between the Aurignacian and the Gravettian; Bolus 2010), however now the evidence points towards an Aurignacian affliation of IIe and a Gravettian one of IId (Taller / Conard 2016).
