[email protected] ABSTRACT – SYSTEMATIC UPDATE AND PHYLOGENY OF THE PROTEROTHERIIDAE (MAMMALIA, LITOPTERNA) FROM THE “MESOPOTAMIENSE” (LATE MIOCENE) OF ENTRE RÍOS PROVINCE, ARGENTINA. A systematic update of the species of Proterotheriidae (Litopterna) from the “Mesopotamiense” of Entre Ríos Province (Argentina) is performed, and their phylogenetic relationships with other members of the family are tested. Brachytherium cuspidatum Ameghino is validated (considered nomen dubium hitherto) and a sexual dimorphism is proposed for this species. This idea is based on metric, but not morphological, differences among the specimens included in it, which is supported by a discriminant analysis. Neobrachytherium ameghinoi Soria and Proterotherium cervioides Ameghino are also valid, and Epitherium? eversus (Ameghino) is assigned to the genus Diadiaphorus. Detailed descriptions of the specimens are presented for each taxon, and their diagnosis are revised. Key words: Proterotheriidae, Ituzaingó Formation, Entre Ríos Province, systematics, phylogeny. Box 330440, 28334 Bremen, Germany Received 1 December 2003; accepted 1 August 2005 Abstract Middle–Late Miocene marine incursions are known from several foreland basin systems adjacent to the Andes, likely a result of combined foreland basin loading and sea-level rising. The equivalent formation in the southern Bolivian Chaco foreland Basin is the Middle–Late Miocene (14–7 Ma) Yecua Formation. New lithological and paleontological data permit a reconstruction of the facies and depositional environment. These data suggest a coastal setting with humid to semiarid floodplains, shorelines, and tidal and restricted shallow marine environments. The marine facies diminishes to the south and west, suggesting a connection to the Amazon Basin. However, a connection to the Paranense Sea via the Paraguayan Chaco Basin is also possible. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. A New Adianthid Litoptern (Mammalia) from the Miocene of Chile
Revista Chilena de Historia Natural 64: 119-125,1991 A new Adianthid Litoptern (Mammalia) from the Miocene of Chile Un nuevo Litopterno de la Familia Adianthidae (Mammalia) del Mioceno de Chile RICHARD L. CIFELLI Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and Department of Zoology University of Oklahoma Norman, OK 73019 USA ABSTRACT A new species of Adianthus is described from the Río Cisnes (type locality of the Friasian age), Miocene of Chile. The species is represented by unusually complete remains, including the first postcranial elements known for a member of the family Adianthidae. In its skeletal anatomy, Adianthus godoyi, new species generally resembles lightly-built Santa- crucian proterotheriids. The new species is unique among litopterns in having the proximal tibia and fibula solidly fused. Like Santacrucian proterotheres, Adianthus godoyi was probably cursorially adapted; the narrowness of the an- terior dental arcade suggest that it was a selective-feeding herbivore, and perhaps consumed mixed vegetation in an open habitat. Adianthus godoyi appears to be closely related and to an as yet unidentified species from the early Santacrucian (Notohippus fauna) of Argentina and to Adianthus bucatus, from the Santacrucian of that country, which otherwise represents the latest known occurrence of the family Adianthidae. The occurrence of Adianthus godoyi in the type fauna of the Friasian thus suggests either that the family was more long-lived than had been previously appreciated, or that the type Friasian local fauna is more similar to those of Santacrucian age than their placement in different land-mammal ages would suggest. Paleontology and stratigraphy of the Aisol Formation (Neogene), San Rafael, Mendoza Analía M. Forasiepi1, Agustín G. Martinelli1, Marcelo S. de la Fuente1, Sergio Dieguez1, and Mariano Bond2 ABSTRACT A preliminary analysis of the geology and paleontology of the Aisol Formation is presented upon new fieldwork that started in 2007. Three different sections are recognized within the Aisol Formation, with fossil vertebrates in the lower (LS) and middle (MS) sections. The faunal association of the LS includes: Anura indet., two indeterminate species of Chelonoidis (Testudininae), Phorusrhacidae indet., Mylodontidae indet., Planopinae indet., Glyptodontidae indet., Propalaeohoplophorinae indet., Nesodontinae indet., Palyeidodon cf. P. obtusum (Haplodontheriinae), Hegetotherium sp. (Hegetotheriidae), Protypotherium sp. (Interatheriidae), cf. Theosodon (Macraucheniidae), and Prolagostomus or Pliolagostomus (Chinchillidae), suggesting a middle Miocene age (probably Friasian s.s. or Colloncuran SALMAs (South American Land Mammal Age) following the scheme from Patagonia). The vertebrate association of the MS includes: Hesperocynus dolgopolae (Sparassocynidae), Tremacyllus sp., Dolichotinae indet., Abrocomidae indet., and Ctenomyidae indet., suggesting at least a late Miocene age (Huayquerian SALMA). The new discoveries increase considerably the vertebrate fossil record of the Aisol Formation and argue in favour of at least two different levels of dissimilar age; this view is also supported by geological data. Three orders of South American extinct native ungulates are recorded from the Santa Cruz Formation along the Atlantic coast of Patagonia: Notoungulata (Adinotherium Ameghino, Nesodon Owen, Interatherium Ameghino, Protypotherium Ameghino, Hegetotherium Ameghino, and Pachyrukhos Ameghino), Litopterna (Theosodon Ameghino, Anisolophus Burmeister, Tetramerorhinus Ameghino, Diadiapho- rus Ameghino, and Thoatherium Ameghino), and Astrapotheria (Astrapotherium Burmeister). An ecomorphological study based on geometric morphometrics of the masticatory apparatus was performed. The reference sample included 618 extant specimens of the orders Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla, Hyracoidea, and Diprotodontia. Thirty six cranial and 27 mandibular three-dimensional landmarks were digitized. Allomet- ric scaling, principal component analyses, and phylogenetic generalized estimating equations on the cranium and mandible were preformed.
