  • Annual Report of the Special Rapporteur
CHAPTER II ASSESSMENT OF THE CURRENT STATE OF FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IN THE HEMISPHERE A. Introduction. Methodology 1. This Chapter describes certain aspects related to the current state of freedom of expression in the Americas. It includes, as did previous reports, a table summarizing cases in which journalists were murdered in 2002, the circumstances surrounding their deaths, the possible motives of the killers, and the status of investigations. 2. To facilitate the description of the specific situation in each country, the Rapporteur classified the various methods used to curtail the right to freedom of expression and information. All of these methods are incompatible with the Principles on Freedom of Expression adopted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The list includes, in addition to murder, other forms of aggression such as threats, detention, judicial actions, intimidation, censorship, and legislation restricting freedom of expression. The Chapter also includes, for certain countries, positive developments, such as the passing of access to information laws, the abolition of desacato (contempt of authority) in one country of the hemisphere and the existence of bills or judicial decisions conducive to full exercise of freedom of expression. 3. The data in this Chapter correspond to 2002. The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression receives information on freedom of expression-related developments from a number of different sources.16 Once the Office has received the information, and bearing in mind the importance of the matter at hand, it begins the verification and analysis process. Once that task is completed, the information is grouped under the aforementioned headings.

ARAB TIMES, TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2021 16 Spain’s Cesar Azpilicueta, (right), scored against Croatia during the Euro 2020 soccer championship round of 16 match between Croatia and Spain, at Parken stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark. (AP) Sports Latest sports scores at — http://sports.arabtimesonline.com Hazard scores winning goal as top-ranked team reach quarters Belgium keep Ronaldo in check, end Portugal title defense SEVILLE, Spain, June 28, (AP): Bel- gium stopped Cristiano Ronaldo on one end, and had just enough attacking power on the other. The top-ranked Belgians held Ron- aldo scoreless and held onto a fi rst-half lead to beat Portugal 1-0 and advance to the quarterfi nals of the European Championship. Ronaldo, who threw his captain’s armband to the ground in de- spair after the fi nal whistle, is still one goal shy of becom- ing the all- time men’s top scorer in inter- national soccer. He came into the match tied Hazard with former Iran striker Ali Daei at 109 goals. Belgium, which have never before won a major soccer title, will next face Italy on Friday in Munich. Belgium’s potent attack, led by Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, also struggled, but Thorgan Hazard scored the winning goal in the 42nd minute with a swerv- ing shot from outside the area. Portu- gal goalkeeper Rui Patrício was left wrong-footed and was late to swat the ball away. Belgium played most of the second half without De Bruyne, who had to be substituted after being tackled from Belgium’s Thomas Vermaelen, (left), and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo challenge for the ball during the Euro 2020 soccer championship round of 16 match between Belgium and Portugal at the behind and injuring his left ankle.

  • The Role of Football in Spain
THE PHENOMENON OF FÚTBOL IN SPAIN: A STUDY OF FÚTBOL IN SPANISH POLITICS, LITERATURE AND FILM Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Timothy Joseph Ashton, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish & Portuguese The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Samuel Amell, Advisor Ignacio Corona Dionisio Viscarri Copyright by Timothy J. Ashton 2009 Abstract This investigation serves to demonstrate the multifaceted connection that the sport of fútbol has with certain aspects of Spanish society, namely, this cultural phenomenon’s long relationship with Spanish politics, literature and film. Since the formation of Spain’s very first club teams, the sport of fútbol has always demonstrated a strong connection with Spain’s historical socio-political disputes. These disputes have become essential elements in making up the very fabric of Spain and range from questions of nationhood, to questions of identity, culture, politics, ideologies and economy. Throughout this study, I address the dispute that has been taking place between the intellectual classes and the fútboling community and defend that although the relationship between intellectuals and fútbol has not been as public as fútbol’s relationship to politics, it has however existed throughout the entire history of the sport. Many intellectuals have deemed the sport of fútbol as an unsuitable topic for intellectual areas such as literature and artistic mediums like film. In this study, I uncover that some of Spain’s most highly praised literary figures had a passion for the sport which they alluded to, sometimes on numerous occasions, as central themes in their work.
