Artist Biography by Richie Unterberger. One of the genuinely strange characters of pre-rock American popular music, Eden Ahbez's main claim to fame was as the composer of "Nature Boy." The melodically and lyrically beguiling song was a huge pop hit for Nat King Cole; it would be covered by many other reputable performers, including Frank Sinatra, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, and the Great Society (Grace Slick's pre-Jefferson Airplane band). But Ahbez's modern stature rests on a 1960 album that mixed exotica album and beatnik poetry. It rates as one of the goofiest efforts in the goofy exotica genre -- and brother, that's saying something, given the stiff competition. Ahbez boasted a resumé as colorful and mysterious as his music. Born Alexander Aberle in Brooklyn in the early 20th century, he changed his name in the 1940s shortly after moving to (where else?) California. A hippie a good 20 years before his time, he cultivated a Christ-like appearance with his shoulder-length hair and beard. He claimed to live on three dollars a week, sleeping outdoors with his family, eating vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Ahbez's big success was getting Nat King Cole to record "Nature Boy," after diligently pestering some of Cole's associates at the Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles, where Cole was performing. Some of the luster was taken off that triumph when a publishing company claimed that Ahbez had taken some of the lyrics from "Nature Boy" from one of their copyrights, the Yiddish song "Schweig Mein Hertz" (the parties reached an out- of-court settlement). Ahbez did manage to place another tune with Cole, "Land of Love (Come My Love and Live With Me)." In the mid-'50s, he did some recording with jazz musician Herb Jeffries; he also did some occasional composing and singing, sometimes for rock & roll novelty records. His most comprehensive statement as a recording artist, however, was the 1960 LP Eden's Island, which wedded Martin Denny-style exotica to Ahbez's near-stereotypical beatnik poetry. Nat King Cole, for one, claimed that Ahbez's hippie-mystical image was no act. That doesn't mean that his desert-island paradise trip doesn't sound darned silly today. It was ripe for revival by space age pop aficionados in the 1990s, however, and reissued on CD in 1995. Ahbez was photographed with Brian Wilson in the studio in 1966, lending further credence to the theory that the head Beach Boy was influenced by exotica during the Pet Sounds and Smile sessions. Ahbez died in 1995 after an auto accident. Death in Eden by Habu. BarbarianSpy for literary heat. If you buy from Amazon, after following a link from this site, we may earn a very small commission. His premise was a no-holds-barred treatment of an unabashedly promiscuous, laid-back, good-guy homicide cop with movie-star looks . Actually I think Journeys Begin, as its a good story even if you cut the sex back, and of course Id have Eric Bana, the Australian, play one of the young men, and maybe Brad Pitt play the other, but he might be too old now. And two real old men play the two old men. Cant think of names. Hum, Harrison Ford, or is he too young? And Clint Eastwood for the one with Alzheimers? Somehow I dont see it. When you start writing, do you already have the story plotted out or do you let the characters dictate what will happen? I have an idea at the start but it grows as it goes along. If I am into it its easy and good, if not its hard and not that good. Do you draw inspiration for your characters from real life? Sometimes. Often not consciously. And I do write some stories with habu in mind as a character or the inspiration for a character. What story havent you written yet but would like to? Is there anything holding you back from writing it? I still havent written the great erotic novel. Whats holding me back is lack of ability and dedication. Seriously? Well The next book is what Id like to be further along with and what is holding me back are other commitments and not being able to get the story into focus clearly. Do you have a system for writing? Do you track word count or write a certain number of hours per day? Do you use music and playlists for inspiration? Im afraid I have no system to my writing. When I am writing I write till I stop, which may be because I have to go somewhere or because I have run out of energy and inspiration for writing. I rarely listen to anything but ABC (our national broadcaster) Classic FM radio in the house and keep it low usually and at times turn it off, as I like silence. But I also get lots of bird noise from outside and dogs etc from my own yard. When did you start writing? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? In High School. I always wanted to write but it didnt just come. What is your favorite gay book that you didnt write? If its not habus? I used to read a lot of gay fiction, but read almost none now. I recommend Allan Hollinghurst's, The Folding Star, which I still much prefer to his big Mann Booker prize winner. And I like the Australian author/comedian Phillip Scotts gay detective books. Name one thing that your readers would be surprised to know about you. Um. I wont shatter any illusions. But I did once hold a just poured and cooled 10kg (25lb) pure gold ingot in my hands in the gold room of a major Australian gold mine in the desert of central Australia. Do you have a guilty pleasure? What is your favorite word/phrase for the male or female genitalia? What is your least favorite word/phrase? Cock and balls, I like the directness. I loathe poop shute. What is your favorite curse word? Um, I have to choose one? Um. Bastard. But I probably say shit more. I swear badly nowadays. I never swore at all till I got right into writing erotica. Yes, it has corrupted me. Verbally at least. What are you currently working on? Road to Persepolis. Yes, the Great Barbarian is on the move. Where can readers find you? www.barbarianspy.com I share this with habu and Shabbu, as well as the artist Ynal. So come visit us if you are over 18 or whatever, we have some great illustrated stories there. Any other tidbits you would like to share? Um. Weight training is great exercise for everyone. And Muscle and Fitness is a great magazine, and I do not have any financial interest in making this statement.

THE CHRONICLE ROSEBUD RETIREMENT VILLAGE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 One for all you girls in the Village Clint Eastwood in 1962 about the time he was playing Rowdy Yates in Rawhide Message from Deb – July 2018 It was with much pleasure that we welcomed two new Residents to our Village in June. We send a very warm welcome to Eleanor Ashton and Margot O’Rourke. We do hope you settle in quickly to your new home and the Village and enjoy the variety of activities available. Residents will have noticed quite a bit of activity in the Village. Apologies if this is causing any inconvenience and at times deterring from the look of the Village. However, with various tradesmen, concrete trucks, deliveries and skips at least we can prove that the Village is on the improve. Currently there is various work being undertaken on seven Units, with another four scheduled to follow. I think this is a very exciting time and the Units are looking fabulous on completion. The building team is very efficient and cohesive and their work is of a high standard. They are also very obliging and helpful to deal with. The Resident Forum agreed to make changes to the garden entrance of the Village. I will be meeting with a representative from Wise Employment to have a Work for the Dole worker to assist with gardening works. A worker will be available for 25 hours a week over six months, with Eric Lee supervising the worker. My priorities are the entrance, the rockery, the lake area and a garden in Floral Court.

EDEN’s debut performance was at the Baden Powell Hotel, Prahran. The band quickly established a local following that saw them perform regularly as a fixture in Melbourne's burgeoning alternative music scene. EDEN’s initial 12 inch EP ‘The Light Between Worlds’ was released in 1990 on Nightshift Records, Scotland. The EP caught the attention of BBC Radio's John Peel who featured tracks on his show, resulting in rapid support of EDEN by The Alternative Press Magazine in the USA. A 7” single version of ‘Searching for Angel’s Hands’ was released by Ultimate Records Australia the same year, broadening EDEN’s growing supporter base through a live appearance on Australia’s national pop music TV series Countdown Revolution. In 1991 EDEN moved to London based label Third Mind Records who continued to grow the band’s profile in Europe and the USA through the 1992 release of their first full length CD ‘Gateway to the Mysteries’ (released in Australia under Elysium/Shock Records). The album was described by the music press as sounding akin to 'the Cocteau Twins had they existed in the 1890s'. In 1993 EDEN joined the roster of Projekt Records, USA releasing the ‘Healingbow’ EP. In 1993, EDEN established a new lineup, Bourke leaving the band as drummer Peter Barrett, keyboardist Paul Machlis, guitarist Tracy Ellerton and bassist Ewan McArthur joined Bowley to form the next iteration of EDEN.

While the Strauss and Tosti selections were both written in the waning years of the nineteenth century, both composers bridged the gap between the two centu- ries, ushering in a new era of composition.

entertainmentOne Tim, where are you ndigotal dwistribu?tion SAM RoSenthAl & PRojekt ARtiStS a collaboration for Timothy Leary’s 100th birthday It’s the centennial of Timothy Leary’s birth; to commemorate, Sam Rosenthal recorded Tim, where are you now? an electronic space music/art rock collaboration. The album celebrates a pioneer of consciousness expansion using his own words accompanied by international artists exploring those same realms via their music. With the permission and encouragement of Timothy Leary’s son Zach and the Leary estate, the album’s 13 tracks contain 4 spoken word “trips” with text excerpted and cut-up from Tim’s first LSD and DMT experiences chronicled in his 1968 book High Priest. These voice+electronics segments serve as interstitial anchor trips that arise out of the music now and again. As founder of 37-year-old Portland-based Projekt Records, Rosenthal helms the label as well as his band Black Tape For A Blue Girl (with 12 albums in the gothic, ambient & art rock genres). Synthesist, songwriter, lyricist and main collaborator, he’s released 8 albums of his music in the last half-decade. For Tim, where are you now? Rosenthal collected musical textures and sources from Projekt label electronic artists, sonically painting with their colors and his ethereal electronics to create the concept album he envisioned. It’s high time to celebrate Leary’s cultural contributions. He’s a visionary who spent his life thinking about the mind, not just altering it but using it to its fullest potential to better tune into the universe. His influence remains so extensive and complex that 53 years after popularizing his catchphrase “turn on, tune in, drop out” inner exploration continues “Tim was a chieftain.

But questions of its origins still linger. As such, BEAR FAMILY RECORDS now submits 'Wild Boy: The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez' as fresh evidence in the quest for answers. Over the past twenty years Ahbez has gone from cult figure to harbinger of the Sixties flower-power movement. This notion is born out largely by his 1948 ant- hem of universal love, Nature Boy, and his rare solo album from 1960, titled 'Eden's Island' – one of popular music's earliest con- cept albums. 'Wild Boy: The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez' both expands the Ahbez catalog and deepens the notion of a psychedelic movement having roots in the 1950s. Side one acts as a compilation of music that Ahbez wrote in the aftermath of Nature Boy. Inclusion of songs like Palm Springs by the Ray Anthony Orchestra and Hey Jacque by Eartha Kitt give listeners the chance to hear obscure cuts by big-name artists in the context of Ahbez for the first time.

Proprio come esseri umani. (continua) Mauro Grossi piano, celesta, arrangiamenti, direzione Claudia Tellini voce Nico Gori clarinetto, clarinetto basso, sax soprano Andrea Dulbecco vibrafono Ares Tavolazzi contrabbasso Walter Paoli batteria, percussioni Possibilità di avere la sezione d'archi in concerto. Estratti dalle prime recensioni pubblicate. “ Bizzarro: un album interamente dedicato alla celebrazione di un unico brano. E' un segno dello straordinario amore da parte del suo ideatore, il pianista Mauro Grossi per una delle composizioni più belle mai scritte non solo in ambito Jazz “Nature Boy”.... Grossi ha elaborato/composto una fantastica serie di variazioni basate sulla melodia di questo meraviglioso pezzo e quindi è possibile ascoltare “Nature Boy” nei contesti più disparati...
