    Roots radical – Place, power and practice in punk entrepreneurship Sarah Louise Drakopoulou Dodd The significance continues to grow of scholarship that embraces critical and contextualized entrepreneurship, seeking rich explorations of diverse entrepreneurship contexts. Following these influences, this study explores the potentialized context of punk entrepreneurship. The Punk Rock band Rancid has a 20-year history of successfully creating independent musical and related creative enterprises from the margins of the music industry. The study draws on artefacts, interviews and videos created by and around Rancid to identify and analyse this example of marginal, alternative entrepreneurship. A three-part analytic frame was applied to analysing these artefacts. Place is critical to Rancid’s enterprise, grounding the band socially, culturally, geographically and politically. Practice also plays an important role with Rancid’s activities encompassing labour, making music, movement and human interactions. The third, and most prevalent, dimension of alterity is that of power which includes data related to dominance, subordination, exclusion, control and liberation. Rancid’s entrepreneurial story is depicted as cycles, not just a linear journey, but following more complicated paths – from periphery to centre, and back again; returning to roots, whilst trying to move forwards too; grounded in tradition but also radically focused on dramatic change. Paradox, hybridized practices, and the significance of marginal place as a rich resource also emerged from the study. EDEN’s debut performance was at the Baden Powell Hotel, Prahran. The band quickly established a local following that saw them perform regularly as a fixture in Melbourne's burgeoning alternative music scene. EDEN’s initial 12 inch EP ‘The Light Between Worlds’ was released in 1990 on Nightshift Records, Scotland. The EP caught the attention of BBC Radio's John Peel who featured tracks on his show, resulting in rapid support of EDEN by The Alternative Press Magazine in the USA. A 7” single version of ‘Searching for Angel’s Hands’ was released by Ultimate Records Australia the same year, broadening EDEN’s growing supporter base through a live appearance on Australia’s national pop music TV series Countdown Revolution. In 1991 EDEN moved to London based label Third Mind Records who continued to grow the band’s profile in Europe and the USA through the 1992 release of their first full length CD ‘Gateway to the Mysteries’ (released in Australia under Elysium/Shock Records). The album was described by the music press as sounding akin to 'the Cocteau Twins had they existed in the 1890s'. In 1993 EDEN joined the roster of Projekt Records, USA releasing the ‘Healingbow’ EP. In 1993, EDEN established a new lineup, Bourke leaving the band as drummer Peter Barrett, keyboardist Paul Machlis, guitarist Tracy Ellerton and bassist Ewan McArthur joined Bowley to form the next iteration of EDEN.

    Abstract Jordan III, Augustus W. B.S. Florida A&M University, 1994 A Study of Language and Ideology in Rap Music Advisor: Dr. O. Osinubi Dissertation Dated June 5,1998 This study examined the language of Hip-Hop songs and ideology of the artists as reflected through their songs. The study was based on the theory that Hip-Hop or rap songs are legitimate artforms because of their use of poetic elements such as figuration, figures of sound, symbolism, and ambiguity. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of a few current rap songs for the purpose of investigating their poetical and ideological elements. The researcher found signification battles by some rap artists as the best examples of songs which express the richness and complexity of Hip-Hop music. The researcher found that both Hip-Hop music lyrics and standard poetry have many similarities, but also have a few different features which enhance their uniqueness. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that the main reason many critics do not consider Hip-Hop or rap music an artform, is that they either compare the music to something extremely different, or they simply do not take the time to listen to its songs. Rap Music is an artform that expresses poetic elements and utilizes electronic devices, thus making it a Postmodernist popular artform. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women.     entertainmentOne Tim, where are you ndigotal dwistribu?tion SAM RoSenthAl & PRojekt ARtiStS a collaboration for Timothy Leary’s 100th birthday It’s the centennial of Timothy Leary’s birth; to commemorate, Sam Rosenthal recorded Tim, where are you now? an electronic space music/art rock collaboration. The album celebrates a pioneer of consciousness expansion using his own words accompanied by international artists exploring those same realms via their music. With the permission and encouragement of Timothy Leary’s son Zach and the Leary estate, the album’s 13 tracks contain 4 spoken word “trips” with text excerpted and cut-up from Tim’s first LSD and DMT experiences chronicled in his 1968 book High Priest. These voice+electronics segments serve as interstitial anchor trips that arise out of the music now and again. As founder of 37-year-old Portland-based Projekt Records, Rosenthal helms the label as well as his band Black Tape For A Blue Girl (with 12 albums in the gothic, ambient & art rock genres). Synthesist, songwriter, lyricist and main collaborator, he’s released 8 albums of his music in the last half-decade. For Tim, where are you now? Rosenthal collected musical textures and sources from Projekt label electronic artists, sonically painting with their colors and his ethereal electronics to create the concept album he envisioned. He was almost forced off the road by a logging truck, all because of his beliefs. Last Wednesday, David Suzuki, dressed in a green suit, brown shirt and black shoes shared his thoughts and beliefs with a crowd of 1,300 at the University of Lethbridge. His talk on nature, its link with the econo­ my and how it will be affected in the millennium, was sold out a half hour before the show started, with over 200 people still wanting to to get in. Suzuki compared our approach to the year 2000 as "embarking on a suicidal road." In the driver's seat is the economy and we, the population, are headed for a brick wall in a car going 100 km/h, arguing about where we want to sit. The people who want to stop the car or veer its course are locked in the trunk. "If we hit the wall, we'll respond. But it's a hell of a lot harder to pick up the pieces after," said Suzuki, comparing the tragedy to that of Lady Diana's. In the past, people understood that we are deeply embedded in the natural world and used this to create our leg up on other species, technology. This growth of science, said Suzuki, "Has provided more insight which has changed the course of human history." Those born after 1950 have grown up in the largest period of growth and change.
