CHURCH NEWS ’ Tis the season to be merry.

‘Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us). Isaiah 7:14

Dear Friends Look at a hundred Christmas cards or Advent calendars, and see how many, if any, bear any reference to the real meaning of Christmas. I find it very sad that this Christian celebration is being dummied down in our shops and towns, where it sometimes seems as though the agenda is to write out any reference to God’s wonderful gift of the Christ child. But the Christmas story is actually very modern and multicultural, encapsulating the message to be found throughout the Gospel. To herald the birth the angels sang “Peace on earth from God to all people” – and don’t we all long for that - and Jesus commanded us, throughout his ministry, to live for others, not ourselves, to seek justice for all and share freely without thought of the cost.

Perhaps this true message of Christmas runs counter to the modern way of thinking, because it demands a response from us. But either we accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ and, with his help, live the life he calls us to, or we decide the whole thing is false, and then there is no Christmas - and I hope we never reach that point.

Jesus’ commandments are always gentle and wise, and if we all followed the greatest of all, 'Love your neighbours as yourselves,’ what a very different place the world would be. These few simple words are God’s answer to the messiness of our lives, but runs counter to the way our human instinct tells us to live. God knew that, he knew what we needed and gave freely of his love and guidance, his forgiveness and grace through his message: 'Peace on earth, goodwill to all men, salvation and forgiveness of sin.’

The wise men and shepherds heard and responded to the amazing events of that night. I pray that we all shall do so, now and in the year ahead. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peace-filled New Year.

Yours in Christ, Sandra Lovern.

SCHOOL NEWS

Chew Stoke Church School pupils help at the Soup Lunch A group of children from Chew Stoke Church School had a great time earlier this month when they helped at St Andrew’s Church soup lunch. The Key Stage 2 pupils welcomed people arriving at the hall, (as they are doing here with John Dobbs) took their coats and were then kept busy helping to serve and clear the soup. The children enjoyed working with the local community so much they have already asked if they can help again next month. At the December soup lunch not only will the children be helping out but they are also hoping to entertain the guests with some festive singing.

CHEW STOKE WI.

November is the end of the WI year so as I write, the AGM is 2 days away. I have had to write the Presidents report so have been reviewing our activities the past year. I am pleased to say that members seem to have enjoyed what has been on offer, with a very varied programme of talks and some memorable outings. Visits to Westgate Farm vineyard and forest Garden, the Bristol Botanic Garden and Stoberry Gardens in Wells were much enjoyed, and I would recommend a visit to each. We made our third visit to Highgrove in July, missing rainy June and saw different areas of this tranquil garden and had a lovely lunch. Other events included an especially entertaining talk from broadcaster Emma Britton and another from Nick King who makes and sells skin products made from goats milk from a prizewinning herd of goats from of all places……. Chew Stoke! The 2020 programme looks vary varied and hopefully has something for everyone. We are celebrating Christmas with a meal at Chew Kitchen on 2nd December, joining the Group Carol Service in on the 9th and listening (and maybe dancing) when we hear about the life and music of Elton John at our December meeting on the11th.

January 15th is an open meeting for anyone, male and female to join us to hear Bryony Williams, "Bake off contestant" talk about her experiences. Do join us. FFI contact Jan 01275 472600.

Chew Stoke Parish Council Short report of November’s meeting www.chewstoke.org.uk (for more details)

The Church Warden of St Andrews Church came to the meeting to discuss the possibility of the current Church Hall being renamed as the Village Hall with The Parish Council taking on financial responsibility. The current Church funds are able to pay for the recent redecoration of the Hall, however within 10 years the Church will not be able to continue carrying more costs and could be forced to close the hall. The Parish Church Council advise that as the Church is a charity then a full repairing lease from the diocese could be offered to the Parish Council. It was agreed in principle to take a lease of the Hall on terms to be agreed, with the Diocese being informed.
