4 ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC BASELINE 4.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter provides a description of the current environmental and socio- economic situation against which the potential impacts of the Jubilee Field Phase 1 development can be assessed and future changes monitored. The chapter presents an overview of the aspects of the environment relating to the surrounding area in which the Jubilee Field Phase 1 development will take place and which may be directly or indirectly affected by the proposed project. This includes the Jubilee Unit Area, the Ghana marine environment at a wider scale and the six districts of the Western Region bordering the marine environment. The Jubilee Unit Area and its regional setting are shown in Figure 4.1. The project area is approximately 132 km west-southwest of the city of Takoradi, 60 km from the nearest shoreline of Ghana, and 75 km from the nearest shoreline of Côte d’Ivoire. Primary data sources include recent hydrographic studies undertaken as part of the exploration well drilling programme in the Jubilee field area, as well as an Environmental Baseline Survey (EBS) which was commissioned by Tullow and undertaken by TDI Brooks (2008). An electronic copy of the EBS is attached to this EIS. It is noted that information on the offshore distribution and ecology of marine mammals, turtles and offshore pelagic fish is more limited due to limited historic research in offshore areas. -

Some biological aspects of brown comber, Serranus hepatus (L.) (Pisces: Serranidae), in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey Zeliha ERDOĞAN, Hatice TORCU-KOÇ* Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Arts, University of Balikesir, Cağış Campus, 10145, Balikesir, Turkey. *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: Age, growth, gonadosomatic index and condition factor of brown comber, Serranus hepatus (L.) were evaluated from 162 specimens collected in Bandırma Bay, the Sea of Marmara between the years of 2012 and 2013 by the hauls of trawls. Total length ranged between 6.5-11.1 cm, while weight varied between 3.62 and 21.52 g. The length-weight relationship was W=0.0216*L2.84, showing negative allometry. According to otolith readings, samples were determined between 1–5 years. The von Bertalanffy growth -1 parameters were estimated as L∞=12.46 cm, k=0.19 year , to=–4.32, W∞=34.77 g, k=0.09 -1 year and to=-1.63. Chapter XXV —Class Oligochaeta
Chapter XXV —Class Oligochaeta (Aquatic Worms)- Phylum Annelida Oligochaetes are common in most freshwater habitats, but they are often ignored by freshwater biologists because they are thought to be extraordinarily difficult to identify. The extensive taxo- nomic work done since 1960 by Brinkhurst and others, however, has enabled routine identifica- tion of most of our freshwater oligochaetes from simple whole mounts. Some aquatic worms closely resemble terrestrial earthworms while others can be much narrower or thread-like. Many aquatic worms can tolerate low dissolved oxygen and may be found in large numbers in organi- cally polluted habitats. Aquatic worms can be distinguished by: (Peckarsky et al., 1990) • Body colour may be red, tan, brown or black. • Cylindrical, thin (some are very thin), segmented body may be upto 5 inches. • May have short bristles or hairs (setae) that help with movement (usually not visible). • Moves by stretching and pulling its body along in a worm-like fashion. Four families in the orders Tubificida and Lumbriculida are common in freshwater in northeastern North America: the Tubificidae, Naididae, Lumbriculidae, and Enchytraeidae. In addition, fresh- water biologists sometimes encounter lumbricine oligochaetes (order Lumbricina; the familiar earthworms), haplotaxid oligochaetes (order Haplotaxida; rare inhabitants of groundwater), Aeolosoma (class Aphanoneura; small worms once classified with the oligochaetes), and Manayunkia speciosa (class Polychaeta) in waters of northeastern North America. (Peckarsky et al., 1990). The two families, Naididae and Tubificidae form 80 to 100% of the annelid communi- ties in the benthos of most streams and lakes at all trophic levels. They range in size from 0.1 cm in Naididae to 3 or 4 cm in relaxed length in Lumbricidae, the family that contains the earth- worms. -

Gabriel Roca 69, 07157 Port d’Andratx, Islas Baleares, Spain ABSTRACT: We examined the short-term movements of a small temperate fish, the painted comber Serranus scriba (Linnaeus 1758), within the marine protected area (MPA) of Palma Bay (NW Mediter- ranean) using passive acoustic telemetry. Fifteen adults were surgically implanted with acoustic transmitters and monitored between July 2007 and February 2008 for periods of up to 36 d. Inter- individual variability was detected for both spatial and temporal patterns. There were 2 principal movement behaviours that were recorded, with some individuals showing high site fidelity and others showing a more mobile behaviour, moving out from the monitoring area. Observation-area curves indicated that a period between 3 and 5 d was required to determine home ranges of the sedentary fish. Home range sizes were small, with a minimum shift of core areas occurring on a daily basis. Total minimum convex polygon (MCP) areas ranged between 0.102 and 0.671 km2, whereas 95% kernel utilization distributions (KUD) ranged between 0.760 and 1.333 km2. Core areas (50% KUD) ranged between 0.175 and 0.294 km2. -

The Order Haplotaxida corresponds preciseLy with the Suborder Opisthopora of Michaelsen or the Sectio Diplotesticulata of Yanaguchi. Four suborders of the Haplotaxida are recognized, the Haplotaxina, Alluroidina, Monil.igastrina and Lunbricina. The Haplotaxina and Monili- gastrina retain each a single superfanily and fanily. The Alluroidina contains the superfamiJ.y All"uroidoidea with the fanilies Alluroididae and Syngenodrilidae. The Lurnbricina consists of five superfaniLies. -
The Relation of Tidal Height and Sediment Type to the Intertidal Distribution of Marine Oligochaetes in Coos Bay, Oregon

Gonor The taxonomy of intertidal oligochaetès, and the relationships between oligochaete species distributions, tidal height, and sediment type, were studied in detail for a sand and mud flat in lower Coos Bay, Oregon. Eighteen species, representing four families, were identified. Three species of Enchytraeidae (Marionina vaucheriae, Marionina callianassae, and Marionina gpnori) and one species of Tubificidae (Aktedrilus oregpnensis) are new to science. A preliminary description of a new family, Psamotheriidae, based on Psarrrnotheriuni hastatus n.g. n.sp. is given. Other species present were Marionina vancouverensis, M. sjaelandica, N. subterranea, and N. achaeta (Enchytraeidae); Aktedrilus locyi, Li.mnodriloides monothecus, L. victoriensis, L. vérrucosus, Tubificoides coatesae, and T. pseudogaster (Tubificidae); and Paranais litoralis (Naididae). Individuals of Enchytraeus sp. and Lumbricillus spp. (Enchytraeidae) were found but were not fully mature, and therefore could not be identified to species. Nine of the eighteen species are known oniy from the northeast Pacific littoral zone, indicating the existence of a distinct regthnal oligochaete fauna. Earlier studies of the Enchytraeidae (Coates and Ellis 1981) and Tubificidae (Brinkhurst and Baker 1979) support this conclusion. Distinct oligochaete species assemblages were closely associated with physical habitat types defined by tidal exposure and sediment type. The distributions of species were not correlated with each other or with physical habitat types, however. Tide levels at which large changes in maximum continuous tidal exposure or submergence occur (critical tide levels) are strongly associated with. -
