International organizations are listed under the country where they are located. The growing usage of the World Wide Web (WWW) required the addition of two more pieces of information to the relevant entries. The Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) of the home pages of the department and the organization, whenever known, are listed in parentheses. The entries contain postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers, telex, cable and electronic-mail addresses. Addresses preceded by "Addr. :" are mail addresses. If an alternate address for an entry exists, then it is generally for express mail or parcels, and is preceded by "or:". Telephone and fax numbers have the general form for international calls: + [country code] - [area code] - [local number], or + [country code] - [local number] where the "+" is the exit code from the national telephone net of the country. These exit codes are shown in the list of Telephone Country Exit Codes. The country code is the identifier of the target country for automatic international calls. The area code usually has to be preceeded by a zero (instead of the + [country code]) if the institute is called from within the national net. Electronic-mail addresses are described in the next paragraph. The directory indicates for each institute the type of research carried out with a brief description of the research programme, and gives information on any accelerators operated. Research types are Theoretical [T], Experimental [E], Accelerator Physics and Engineering [A], and Other R&D related to HEP [0]. Included in the database, but not printed, are the approximate number of papers published in the last two years in each category of activity. An index is provided for easy reference. It contains acronyms and some names of institutes as well as towns with some alternative forms. The information in this directory is also available on the WWW at the URL : http://wwwas.cern.ch/library/guides_lists/hepinstitut.html Form of Electronic-mail addresses There are a number of problems in indicating e-mail addresses, mainly related to the lack of a standard syntax ensuring that the same address can be used from any point to reach any HEP site. The representation chosen (RFC822) should, however, make it relatively easy to get to the right addressee in most cases. In this scheme, each address has the general form: user@subdomain(l).[ ... .]top-level-domain, where user is the addressee's login name on the system to which the e-mail message should be delivered. In most cases we have not given a specific "value" for this field, but have shown it as "user", which must be replaced by the addressee's login name. subdomain(l) is the name of the "system" to which the e-mail message is to be delivered (e.g. cern). There are a few cases where the value of this field is the DECNET address of a VAX machine (e.g. 40194). [ ... ] are names of further subdomains, if any, followed by a period. top-level-domain is a 2-character standard (ISO) country code (e.g. ch for Switzerland). • A few sites can only be reached from VAX/VMS machines with an X.25 connection. These sites are represented in the form psi%x2S_address_number::user • A few sites are mentioned with their UNIX-style address to increase probability for the path to the target host computer to be recognized. The representation then has the form hostl!host2!host3!...hostn!user • It is advisable to consult the local e-mail manager of each site for shorter routes or specific features in the local e-mail system. Example: I) In the address [email protected] Wolfgang.Simon is the registered identifier of the addressee cern is the subdomain(l) ch is the top-level-domain, in this case the country code for Switzerland. -2- HEP Directory 1997 Edition ALICE, the CERN integrated Library system At CERN we have implemented an integrated library system known as ALICE. Access to the library catalogue is via WWW: http://alice.cern.ch/ Details on how best to formulate searches in ALICE can be found in the HELP available within the application. Printed copies, for users with no access to WWW, can be ordered by e-mail to [email protected], or by writing to Anita OLOFSSON, SIS secretariat, CERN, CH-1211 GENEVA 23, Switzerland. This guide is produced from the DIR database of ALICE. The database includes all information provided by the institutes listed; it also includes certain information not provided in this printed version, inter alia the name and e-mail address of the contact person, and the approximate number of papers published in the last two years in each category of activity: Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics, Accelerator Physics, and Other R&D Related to High Energy Physics. In addition, the database contains a number of entries for institutes not fulfilling the criteria for inclusion in the printed list or from whom no information has been received for several years. Comments on managing and updating of the Directory There are many obstacles to producing an up-to-date directory of research institutes in a large and dynamic field. Obviously, a printed version is (at best) correct only up to the cutoff date for data input. Response to questionaires sent out to institutes is far from 100%, and data provided are often incomplete and not easy to convert into a standard form. The directory is printed from computer-typeset originals created from an online database by means of B7£X. Institutes listed will receive one copy of the directory with a computer-produced sheet presenting the institute's entry. We would greatly appreciate receiving these sheets with appropriate amendments and additions in case of error. In order to keep the database up to date, please also notify any further changes as soon as possible, preferably by e-mail ([email protected] or [email protected]) or by fax (+41 - 22 - 782 8611). Suggestions for improvements of the directory are always welcome. Geneva, April 1997.
