    HMS Olympus: A Tale of Tragedy and Heroics Timothy Gambin This paper is based on the annual Andrew Vella Memorial Lecture delivered in December 2013. Through it I hope to do honour to his memory as well as to the memory of the young men who served on board the submarines that operated from Malta during World War n. What we have here is a tale of loss and discovery, tragedy and heroism - a tale that has remained relatively unknown - but one that certainly deserves to be told. It is not solely about a submarine but just as importantly, it is also about the brave young men that served on her. In fact, the vessel and her crew are inextricably linked for one cannot exist without the other. HMS Olympus was built by Beardmore Shipyards on the Clyde River in Glasgow where numerous other warships had been constructed. An early photo of the HMS Olympus (private collection). III STORJA2015 The Olympus was down in 1927, launched in 1928 and subsequently commissioned in 1930. She was part of the 0 or Odin Class submarine, the first submarine to be designed and built after World War One.l This class of submarine measured 84 meters in length and nine meters at the beam. It had a displacement of 1700 tons on the surface and 2030 tons submerged. Of the six vessels in this class built for the Royal Navy, one, the Odin was built at Chatham.For the record, HMS Odin was lost off Taranto with all hands on deck in 1940.2 The other boats were built to moderately differehtspeCifications - two were for the Australian Navy and three destined to the Chilean Navy.

    !2 FOREWORD Lennox Napier commanded HMS RORQUAL during the most critical and challenging period of the Mediterranean Campaign during the Second World War. History records his achievements and distinguished war record, which earned him a DSO and DSC; this book does much more than that. His son, Christopher, himself a submariner, has been able to bring together a number of sources including Napier’s own voice from BBC transcripts to provide an in-depth study of the man himself. 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Submarine Command Course and, as I read Christopher Napier’s words, it is clear to me that his father’s deep professionalism, detailed planning and calm and unemotional leadership were traits demanded by the course then as they are now. Submarines today still undertake arduous and sometimes dangerous patrols; they engage the enemy with torpedoes as during the Falklands War or Tomahawk missiles as during the Kosovo Campaign. They are called to patrol around the world monitoring trouble spots and in all this Lennox Napier would have felt at home. His story is well worth reading, not only by historians, but by all submariners - especially those preparing themselves for command. As Lennox answered when asked to what he would attribute his success: "A combination of experience and caution. What successes we had, which were not as great as some others, were I think largely due to some degree of caution, not trying to do more than the available ship and force was capable of, and surviving long enough to gather experience. If you have experience your chances of surviving and carrying out successful operations increases, of course, enormously with time.” This is excellent advice today and I commend this book to you.

La nature de ces relations ont changé au fil des années tant que la provenance des coques individuelles et des types d’équipement et d’armes communs a abouti à la croissance et la décroissance d’influence entre les partenaires alliés. Cependant, l’utilisation prudente des réseaux pré-établis créés à travers des échanges outre-mer a permis la transition vers une nouvelle classe de sous- marin en dépit des obstacles techniques et de personnel. Cross-connect: Aboard conventional submarines, a valve that allows water compensating systems to be connected together when a major component of one system such as a pump or valve chest is inoperable or defective. Cross-connection permits achievement of the correct trim and ballast conditions when the integrity of the primary system is not intact. When the Naval Service of Canada was created a century ago, the government of the day considered, then rejected, including submarines in its modest proposal for a Canadian fleet. However, the advent of the First World War resulted in the 1914 acquisition of Canada’s first submarines and, for the first half the 100 years since, Canada operated this type of naval craft on an intermittent basis.
