This research incorporates paradigmatic classification and petrography to answer questions related to provenience, production mode, and exchange patterns of handmade prehistoric pottery from Gajtan, Zagorë, Kodër Boks, Tumuli 088 and 099 in Shkodër, in Northern Albania. Pottery samples analyzed in this study were collected from test excavations by the Shkodra Archaeological Project (PASH). The results yielded evidence that the area has sufficient local clay sources and other easily accessible natural resources to produce pottery in a domestic mode. Gajtan and Zagorë appeared as two distinct entities, but the former settlement seems to have played a dominant role as a production and distribution center within the region. Results from this study indicate that pots appear to have played an important socio-economic role in northern Albania, across time and space. DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my mother. CHAPTER II.0 General overview Villages Administrative Administrative Municipality Region Units Offices Vrith-Razëm Shkrel Koplik Malësi e Madhe Shkodër Razëm is a hamlet of the mountain village of Vrith, which is only 4 km away (Fig. II-0.1). After the administrative reform in 2015, Vrith became part of Malësi e Madhe, the northernmost of the Albanian municipalities and as such, a border place. This pe- culiar geographic location – mountainous isolation on the one hand, and the constant threat from neighbouring nations on the other – also resulted in the creation and de- velopment of specific social and cultural phenomena. Two examples worth mention- ing are the traditional rhapsodic chants based on the Eposi i Kreshnikëve1 (a cultural heritage of inestimable value) and the celebrated collection of customary laws gath- ered in the Kanun code2. Razëm lies within the Regional Natural Park of Shkrel (established as a protected area in 2014) and is considered the ‘gateway’ to the Western Albanian Alps. Together with the villages of Reç e Bogë, Razëm forms a triad of great interest from the point of view of tourism (Figs. II-0.2 and II-0.3). The Alpine area on which it stands is characterised by a vast network of trails and a series of high-altitude pastures (bjeshkë) with numerous mountain hut settlements 1 The chants of the oral tradition collected in the Epos narrate stories inspired by the wars against the enemies who came from beyond the Serbian border.

Në një natyrë të paprekur dhe të shoqëruar nga udhërrëfyes vendas mund të vizitohen këthesat gjarpëruese të kanionit të Përroi të Thatë dhe shpellat e shumëta që gjenden në zonë brenda të cilave ka shumë histori dhe legjenda. Qëndrimi në bujtina dhe hotele, ushqimi natyral, rizbulimi i traditave të lashta do ta bëjnë udhëtimin tuaj në Shkrel të paharrueshëm. PNR Shkrel gjendet zemër të Apleve Shqiptare dhe është cilësuar dhe si “Porta hyrëse e alpeve”. Ai ndodhet ndërmjet “ Parkut Kombëtar të Thethit” dhe “ Liqenit të Shkodrës”. Afërsia me këto dy parqe e bën atë një destinacion të rëndësishëm. Avantash tjetër është afërsia me Malin e Zi , vetëm 25 km larg. PNR Shkrel dhe plani i menaxhimit të tij është hartuar në vitin 2014, me mbështetjen e projektit “ Ruajtja e agrobiodiversitetit në Shqipërinë rurale (CABRA) , e financuar nga GIZ.

CASE ALBANIAN ALPS Brilanda BUSHATI University of Shkodra "Luigj Gurakuqi”, Economic Faculty, Shkoder, Albania http://unishk.edu.al [email protected] Rifat TALANI University of Shkodra "Luigj Gurakuqi”, Social Sciences Faculty, Shkoder, Albania http://unishk.edu.al [email protected] Abstract The geographical phenomena in general and the shapes of the relief with their morphometry in particular, are product of a complex factors, mainly from the internal forces (endogeny) and the outer forces (exogenous) that in struggle and unity with each - other have make continuously over the years, the modeling of the relief and of the Albanian Alps in particular. Emphasizing that the overlapping among the average altitude, horizontal tearing and vertical tearing are influenced by a large number of factors such as geological lithification structures, also even the exogenous factors as climate with its elements (temperature, precipitations, pressure). Study area of the basins in the Albanian Alps distinguish five tectonic areas which according to their appertaining, are part of eugeosyncline, such as Gashi and Mirdita, while in miogeosyncline is the Cukali area, and the authentic Alps. In this study it is tried (probably for the first time in field of geographic studies and especially in geomorphometry) the natural phenomena to be calculated and analyzed through statistic methods and concretely with the theory of Correlation, in the triple correlative evaluation. For instance, the allocation of health and social care funding, housing, roads, water and sewerage and the provision and maintenance of schools have all distinctive aspects in urban and rural areas. Employment for urban and rural population has different features as well. In Albania, as in most other countries, it is difficult to distinguish exactly the urban population from the rural one. Even though not always reflecting what is certainly urban or rural, in Albania, the administrative definition based on the law is used also for statistical purposes. However, the present availability of small-area data derived from the 2011 population and housing census covering the entire territory of the country, has made possible an attempt to introduce also in Albania new definitions and classifications of urban and rural areas for statistical purposes.

The project, co-funded under the Italy-Albania-Montenegro Programme, aims at transferring know-how finalized to enable Partners with effective strategic planning and an extended governance model for the whole territories, focused on energy efficiency and on safety of cities from the risks generated by climate change, following the CoM initiative in Puglia and Molise Regions (Italy), Albania and Montenegro. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the kick off meeting of the project has been held with a mixed methodology: online and face-to-face in the premises of the “Union of Municipalities of Grecìa Salentina (Italy). The meeting has been attended by all project partners and by a representative of the Joint Secretariat.
