  • Koch Brothers Exposed: 2014 Edition
Presents: Koch Brothers Exposed: 2014 Edition A film by Robert Greenwald (56 min., USA, 2013) Language: English Publicity: Linsey Pecikonis Brave New Films Tel: 310-204-0448x225 E-mail: [email protected] High-resolution film stills may be downloaded at http://www.bravenewfilms.org/koch_presskit ABOUT THE FILM In early 2011, Robert Greenwald and the Brave New Films (BNF) staff questioned how to make ordinary Americans care about the activities of David and Charles Koch, billionaire brothers who were spending hundreds of millions of dollars to influence federal, state and local elections. The Koch brothers were not yet in the daily conversations of the average American, but that would change with the 2012 release of BNF’s investigative documentary Koch Brothers Exposed. Originally Greenwald envisioned Koch Brothers Exposed as a series of thirteen short investigative videos that shed light on the Koch political dealings and the negative impact their money has on a variety of aspects of American life. These mini-documentaries immediately went viral, and viewers made it clear to BNF that they wanted more comprehensive coverage of the Koch’s activities. The first edition of the hour-long Koch Brothers Exposed highlighted the Koch’s efforts to gut Social Security by spending more than $28 million to popularize the fiction that the federal program was on the brink of collapse. It also addressed the Koch’s attempts at re-segregating schools in North Carolina; their efforts at voter suppression by supporting misleading voter ID laws; and the disastrous impact of their environmental policies on oil and gas projects and on industrial toxic waste.

From Tupelo to Memphis to New York, Las Vegas, and countless points between, the journey explores the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. What emerges is a visionary portrait of the state of the American dream and a penetrating look at how the hell we got here. The King premieres on Independent Lens Monday, January 28, 2019, 9:00-10:30PM ET (check local listings) on PBS. Far more than a musical biopic, The King is a snapshot of Credit: David Kuhn America at a critical time in the nation’s history. Tracing Elvis’ life and career from his birth and meteoric rise in the deep south to his tragic and untimely end in Hollywood and Las Vegas, The King covers a vast distance across contemporary America, painting a parallel portrait of the nation’s own heights and depths, from its inspired origins to its perennial struggles with race, class, power, and money.

The thesis explores 'myth-revision' in selected works of Fantasy fiction. Myth- revision is defined as the retelling of traditional legends, folk-tales and other familiar stories in such as way as to change the story's implied ideology. (For example, Angela Carter's 'The Company of Wolves' revises 'Red Riding Hood' into a feminist tale of female sexuality and empowerment.) Myth-revision, the thesis argues, has become a significant trend in Fantasy fiction in the last three decades, and is notable in the works of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman.

  • August 30, 2011 President Barack Obama the White House
August 30, 2011 President Barack Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, The announcement that you will be presenting a jobs plan for the country could not have come at a more crucial moment. The number one problem America faces today is the jobs crisis. A problem this serious needs a plan to match it in scope. Tax cuts and incentives for corporations have repeatedly failed to put Americans back to work. It is time to move beyond these half- measures designed to appeal to a narrow ideological minority who have repeatedly shown their unwillingness to negotiate and their disinterest in real solutions. History—and proven economics—tells us that any plan to solve our job crisis needs to be big, bold, and create jobs directly. With 25 million Americans out of work, or only able to find part-time work when they want and need full time jobs, aggressive action is needed. Representative Jan Schakowsky’s "Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act" is an example of the kind of bold step that we need to take as a country and that you should include as part of your broader jobs agenda. It would decrease unemployment 1.3 percent by directly creating more than 2 million jobs, including jobs for construction workers to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, and for educators, health care workers, firefighters, and police, to strengthen our communities. Across the political spectrum, Americans are united in calling for the government to create jobs and on how we can pay for this investment in our economic recovery: Raise taxes on the wealthy, so that they pay their fair share again.

For the past forty years, the war on drugs has resulted in more than 45 million arrests, one trillion dollars in government spending, and America’s role as the world’s largest jailer. Yet for all that, drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available than ever. Filmed in more than twenty states, The House I Live In captures heart-wrenching stories from those on the front lines — from the dealer to the grieving mother, the narcotics officer to the senator, the inmate to the federal judge — and offers a penetrating look at the profound human rights implications of America’s longest war. The House I Live In premieres on Independent Lens, hosted by Stanley Tucci, on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 10 PM on PBS (check local listings). The film recognizes drug abuse as a matter of public health, and investigates the tragic errors and shortcomings that have resulted from framing it as an issue for law enforcement.
