President’s Message: Nov-Dec 2008 By Jim Brennan I just came from the polling place after casting my vote in this very important national election. I hope you have done the same. Now you need to cast your vote one more time – on the important issues facing the club. Debbie has already put together the draft ballot and as soon as it is approved she will be sending them out to everyone, and I encourage you to take the time to read the issues and vote on them. If you are undecided on any of the issues, then I would like to sway you toward a “Yes” vote because that is the opinion of the committee members and board offi cers who worked on these issues. If you have any questions on any of the issues on the ballot, be sure to contact a committee member or board member so they can help you with the information you need to make a decision. Bird hunting season is in full swing and my Jazzy and Presley pup are having a ball chasing after and retrieving those pheasants. We have had unusually nice weather here in the Seattle area this and it has made for some lovely sunny days and memorable pheasant hunts. But it will be turning cold soon and we’ll be changing over from the orange vests and hats to our camo clothes and waders as the ducks come down the Pacifi c fl yway. Th at, of course, is where the IWS really shines! Jazzy’s favorite pastime is retrieving ducks from our two duck ponds at our ranch in Eastern Washington – and this is the year she will be showing Presley how that skill is perfected! I was a little worried that I hadn’t taught Presley anything about swimming yet, but a couple of weekends ago we were out pheasant hunting and came to a wide irrigation canal with fl owing water. Presley just walked down the bank, entered the water and started swimming across the canal, then up the canal, then down the canal, obviously enjoying this new-found pastime! My worries disappeared – he will be ready to retrieve ducks from the ponds! I should have guessed that it wasn’t going to be a problem since after all, he is an Irish WATER Spaniel! One other great day in the fi eld needs to be mentioned – my friend Paul Price came down from Calgary with his IWS’s for a day of pheasant hunting with me over in eastern Washington. He brought Torin, Meara and Maggie-the-pup and I brought Jazzy and Presley-the-pup and we hunted them together. It was absolutely fantastic to walk behind the seasoned hunters Torin and Jazzy and see them work the cover and fl ush birds with the pups close on their heels. Torin fl ushed one bird right over the top of Paul’s head and I almost split my gut laughing while watching him try to get a shot off at that bird without falling over. We’ll laugh about that one for a long time to come. Th e day of hunting was very successful and we closed it with pictures of Jazzy and Torin holding pheasants and us holding our guns – See the picture of the proud and tired hunters on the side bar! Th e newsletter editor has established schedules now for the regular deadlines for input to the next copy of the newsletter and they are published in the newsletter for your benefi t. If you make your deadlines, she will get the newsletter out right on the published schedule. Also, if you really want to help get the newsletter out in a timely manner, please consider getting your newsletter in electronic format instead of paper. Th at will save all the printing, stuffi ng, labeling, stamping, and mailing the paper copies which is so time-consuming and expensive. I am still doing it all as free labor but I’m rapidly burning out and will need to hire it done soon, so the more people who opt for the electronic version, the longer I can go without Irish Water Spaniel Club of America 2 Nov. / Dec. 2008

burnout and it will cost less when we do have to hire it out. To change to electronic delivery, just send an email to Jeremy Kezer, our Membership Chairperson at: [email protected] and let him know you’d like to either have an electronic copy of the newsletter emailed to you or you will download it yourself from the fi les section of Rattails. But in any case, have your name removed from the hard copy mailing distribution list. And I will thank you from the bottom of my worn-out fi ngers and wrists! Th ere are a lot of other issues before the board to be dealt with such as the upcoming health survey, web site litter listings, a code of ethics, the AKC group realignment vote, the Westminster breed information request, the WebVet.com breed information request, the need for a PR/Communications offi cer, awards/trophies issues, and the HOF/ROM implementation – so you can see we have plenty on our plate to deal with at our monthly board meetings. As always, if you have questions or issues about the club operations, be sure to contact a committee or board member – we are here to serve you! Have a great and safe hunting season with your curly ones!

Secretary’s Report: October 2008 Board Minutes By Deborah Bilardi Th e newsletter is being proofread at this time. I am preparing a sample ballot for the Board’s approval and will send it out ASAP to the membership. Th e Board approved sponsoring a ribbon through http://bestjunior.com/. We are researching the facts now. It looks like it will be a $15.00 investment for the 2008 Best IWS Junior Handler. Th ere are 3 juniors in the running now and we hope to have more juniors join the fun. Susan Sarracino-Deihl was approved to replace Jennifer Weaver as Midwest Representative. Hannah Loonsk was approved to replace Stephanie O’Reilly as Mid-Atlantic Representative. Th e Health and Genetics Committee is working on a survey about IWS health concerns. Letters to the Editor Standard Committee I want to thank Colleen and her Standard Committee for a vastly improved, clearly organized and well-written revised proposal. Th is revision should stand us in good stead for decades to come. I will enthusiastically vote for approval and urge the membership to do the same. Well done, everyone--and thank you for your spirit of compromise and years of hard work. Lynn Musgrave IWSCA Member since 1985 Board Member 2001-2006

IWSCA Support of NAIA To the Editor: I would like to respond to the letter from Lynn Musgrave that was published in the last newsletter, regarding the IWSCA’s support of NAIA. Her lack of understanding of the diff erent groups who support NAIA, and what their goals are, is very evident in the letter that she wrote. It is this very prevalent misunderstanding that needs to be addressed. Her claim in the letter “Th eir primary fi nancial backing, though, comes from for-profi t commercial ranchers, furriers, along with hunting, fi shing, and trapping associations and commercial whalers and hunters of marine animals.” is completely and totally inaccurate. Th e reality is that roughly 90-95% of the funds that are donated to NAIA come from , cat, bird and horse people and veterinarians. And of that contribution approximately 90% is from the dog community. If you are going to write something that could potentially harm someone’s reputation, you have a responsibility to do your research fi rst to discover the truth. If you make statements that have not been researched, you need to qualify such statements as your opinion instead of stating them as a fact. Politics is a huge machine with so many pieces. As is evident in the current climate of political ads, many half-truths and even false information is propagated to make claims that are often unfounded. Th is is, and has been, the case in information put forth regarding the breeding of purebred and is especially prevalent in the area of animal rights versus animal welfare. Another truth is that it is much easier to divide and conquer than it is to take on the whole. If the purebred AKC breeder takes the stance that what happens to cat people or horse people has no impact on them, then they are allowing this division to take place. Currently AKC is in a battle for survival because there are at least 30 other registries now registering dogs in this country alone. So, even this division of the dog community into fractions contributes to the “divide and conquer” way of thinking. Yes, NAIA is affi liated with organizations that are outside of the dog community. Th ey are striving for the political clout necessary to fi ght the battles that need to be fought. Th is does Irish Water Spaniel Club of America 4 Nov. / Dec. 2008

not mean they give blanket support to many of the things that caring humans can agree are inhumane. Th ey are truly an “Animal Welfare” organization in the best sense of the term. Th ey are striving for “truth in advertising”. Th ey are just seeking open and honest discussion about many very important issues. Th ey are working to keep very complicated issues, often not well thought through, off the ballot and in the hands of people that will look at the total picture, not just an emotion-wrenching picture. I encourage all of you to go to the NAIA web page (www.naiaonline.org) and spend some time fi nding out more about the organization. I further encourage those of you that can, to come to the presentation being off ered at the 2009 National Specialty so you can hear Patti Strand speak, and ask all the questions you would like. Th en decide. But please do not make your decision based on false information. Respectfully submitted, Colleen McDaniel

Animal-Related Legislation and the NAIA To the IWSCA Editor, As the person in the IWSCA with possibly the broadest experience when it comes to the area of animal-related legislation, I must take exception to Ms. Musgrave’s letter. Please bear in mind that especially over the last few years, I have been working extremely closely with AKC’s Government Relations Department, several AKC Board members as well as with NAIA, CFA/Th e Cat Fanciers’ Association and various other groups who’ve all been fi ghting on the front lines to stem the tide of anti-breeder/anti-pet legislation. Over the course of my ten+ years actively involved in legislative matters, I’ve come to know and understand the diff erent “players” in this escalating war. What we must ALL clearly understand is that to even begin to fi ght the well-funded Animal Rights extremists, in Hillary Clinton’s words, “takes a village.” Th at village includes a coalition of purebred breeders and fanciers, as well as a myriad of others who share their lives with and/or depend upon animals, as it is not just dogs and dog people who are under assault. Also crucial to this eff ort, is the need to actively educate and engage pet owners and the general public about the power and importance of the human-animal bond. If we are to progress, we must set aside our biases against those from outside our insulated little world of the dog Fancy. If we don’t, then we can kiss our precious curly brown ones goodbye in very short order. Patti Strand is an AKC Board Member as well as the National Director and Chair of the National Animal Interest Alliance/NAIA. Along with her husband Rod, she is the author of Th e Hijacking of the Humane Movement: Animal Extremism. Patti has actively been involved in fi ghting animal extremists for almost twenty years. I personally have had many discussions with members of AKC’s Government Relations Department about their extremely new Political Action Committee/PAC. From what they’ve explained to me, donations to the PAC will generally go to buy “face time” with politicians, and NOT to directly helping the majority of pet owners faced with yet another draconian proposal in their back yard. Also explained to me by Department members and AKC Board members, is the criteria that AKC employs regarding which legislative battles they choose to participate in. AKC has some extremely bright and intelligent people in the Government Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 5

Relations Department, but their staff is very limited + they have the huge AKC corporate bureaucracy to contend with. Bottom line – if you live in a smaller town or county, AKC will probably NOT be there to help you, perhaps aside from some printed literature. NAIA, on the other hand, has been able to be nimble and has done its best to help wherever it’s been needed. It is my understanding that the lion’s share – something like 90-95% – of the funds donated to support NAIA come from canine, feline, avian & equine people as well as veterinarians, and of that, about 90% comes from dog owners. Again, this is about having an eff ective coalition that can stand together against the Wayne Pacelles and Ingrid Newkirks of the world, not to mention the Jerry Vlasaks, or even the Oprah-“lites” [if you don’t know who these people are or which organizations they represent, I urge you to do a bit of research]. NAIA’s offi cers and board members refl ect that necessarily diverse coalition. It includes scientists, researchers, educators, horse people, cattle people, wild life managers, animal welfare advocates, veterinarians, physicians, attorneys, law enforcement, pet therapy people, as well as AKC breeders, fanciers, and judges, among others. I encourage you to go to the NAIA web site -- http://www.naiaonline.org/ -- and to spend some time learning the truth, NOT conjecture, about this organization and about what an incredible resource they are and have been. I understand that Patti Strand will be making a presentation at IWSCA 2009. I’m sure that she’ll be delighted to candidly and truthfully answer any questions that you or Ms. Musgrave may have, provided that you make the time to attend. See you there! Sincerely, Florence Blecher IWSCA Member since 1987 Breeders’ Committee Member IWSCA Board Member from 1994-2000 (Past President 1998-2000 -- & President during whose term the Breeders’ Committee was formed) IWSCA Legislative Liaison Recognized by AKC for legislative work in California Northeast Regional Report By Tara Darling-Lyon Wine Country Results All had a great time, the weather was great up there for a change. We had a great turn out with folks from Canada and the USA. A lot of little pups were present and had great fun playing together. Folks swam the dogs in the cold lake, had group stay practices and lessons on retrieving were given. Mary Su and Rich Turner again played host to this wonderful gathering of IWS. Not only did they host the parties but they provided wonderful trophies. A special thanks to them from me for all the hard work they do. We had folks in all events, obedience, agility, rally and conformation. Irish Water Spaniel Club of America 6 Nov. / Dec. 2008

Mid-Atlantic Regional Report By Hannah Loonsk A Little About Me My name is Hannah Loonsk and I am your new Mid-Atlantic Representative. Like all of you, I have a curly brown friend, Marley (CH Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 9

Realta’s Irishtafarian CGC TDI). I have been showing Marley in juniors for almost fi ve years and have shown him at three Nationals. I am currently training him in Agility and Rally. You may also remember us in our freestyle début at the 2007 Minnesota National. Usually I would describe Marley’s personality, but well, he’s an Irish Water Spaniel and that pretty much sums it up.

Dock Diving Marilyn Cantrell and Mickey had great success at the National Dock Diving Competition in Chantilly, VA, the weekend of September 28th. During the competition Mickey received his Novice Title in Dock Diving. Janne and Dede also competed. Mickey was also part of a segment on the local Fox News Channel about the Chesapeake Dock Diving Club. He received several minutes of TV time because he insisted on swimming for over one hour! Southeast Regional Report By Deborah Hughes News from the South! Yes there are still IWS in the southeast we’ve just been very very quiet! Not a lot going on in the show area down here since the specialty. Gratton took Luna (D’Locks Lunar Eclipse) up to the Wine Country shows and pulled off RWB and a 1st from an extremely competitive Open Bitch class. I understand he and Luna are training in agility now while waiting on more show opportunities. I guess she plans to follow her uncle Skylyr’s pawprints. Skylyr (CH Ildanoch Reach For Th e Sky RE MX MXJ) recently earned his MXJ title. His housemate Sarah Jean (Poole’s Ide Skyrish D’Locks CD RN AX AXJ) earned her NA, OA, AX, AXJ all since the National and has legs toward her MX & MXJ. Go Sarah Jean & Kenny! Steve Riseman and Pat Kadlec have been representing the IWS in the fi eld with Tiki (Realta Tiki Torches at Midnight). Tiki earned his UKC Hunting Title on Saturday, October 18 at the Charleston Retriever Club hunt test. Tiki was the only participant that passed the Seasoned test that day. He followed that up with another pass on Sunday. He was handled on both days by trainer Pam Kadlec. Tiki’s housemate Copper (Ildanoch Pint O’Harp RE SH) has been putting his hunting nose to good work. He and Kathy Riseman have started Training and have been the stars of the class. In other exciting news, I was contacted by Jacob at the Jeff erson Parrish Animal Shelter in Marrero, Louisiana. He said he had two 6-year old IWS (male & female) who were an owner turn in. Unfortunately this shelter is one that has little funds, assistance, or space. Large dogs are generally euthanized right away. I asked him to hold off till Saturday and we would take care of them. I spread the word on the SE list and had instant response from people eager and willing to help out. Dede instantly recognized the boy Furby as being a littermate to her Flikka and knew that the girl Patty was from Bridget. Jacob held on to them (and even gave them a bath before I picked them up) and I drove them from New Orleans back to Atlanta where Steve and Kathy Riseman kindly got them and delivered them to Pam Kadlec. From Pam they will go back to Dede and if necessary Patty will go back to Bridget. I spent a little time with these guys and have to say that they are so sweet and loving and well socialized that they were clearly loved. It’s just sad that something went wrong in their previous home and that person did not contact the club directly (please please please...if you have to give up your IWS, contact your breeder. If you can’t do that, contact the club and let us help!!!!!) Th is is not a club rescue as Dede and Bridget have taken full responsibility for the dogs they bred. However, Jacob and the Jeff erson Parish Animal Hospital went above and beyond their requirements in tracking down the National Club and the SE Rescue person and making Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 11

sure these pups had a chance at a future. Th e dogs received medical care and a bath and some good pettings while they were there. I saw this facility fi rst hand and they could use some help. Please keep them in mind when planning donations: Jeff erson Parish Animal Shelter West Bank attn: Jacob Stroman 1869 Ames Blvd Marrero, La 70072

I spoke to Jacob the other day to let him know how Furby & Patty were doing and he was so appreciative of the donations they’ve already received from the SE and Dede and Bridget. He apparently is a new employee of the shelter and the fi rst mail that he received with his name on it was a letter of thanks from Dede. Oh, and if you know anyone looking for a sweet loving IWS (or 2) please send them in Dede or Bridget’s direction. Th e Combined Specialty Clubs of Atlanta held a dog event recently with an obedience match, agility trial, handling classes, freestyle demo, and a meet the breed section. Th e CSCA generously allowed the IWS to set up a booth in their meet the breed section. Unfortunately the event was not well advertised so we did not receive a huge crowd. But the park that it was held in is a very popular park for the area and they were holding a pumpkin festival so we got a lot of family traffi c. Helen and I brought 5 Irish Water to represent the breed. We had a 9 year old bitch in a “retired bitch trim” (short body, long topknot & ears), a couple of 5 year old males (1 cut totally down & 1 in show coat), a 4 year old female in show coat and a 3 year old female in “specials” coat. With diff erent sexes, ages, coat types, and trims we felt we were letting people see all the variances in our 1 color breed. Th e booth was extremely entertaining for everyone as occasionally one of the dogs would decide to jump over the xpen and leave with whatever family had just been visiting. I believe the CSCA is planning to hold these events frequently as it meets AKC requirements for public education. I’ve asked them to keep us informed so that we can be part of the meet the breed opportunities.

Mid-West Regional Report By Susan Sarracino Earlier this month Jen asked me if I would be the MidWest Representative. I decided to accept. It has been a long time since I have had the time to serve the IWSCA – 28 yrs to be exact when I resigned as Vice-President when I started med school. If anyone from the MidWest has news that they would like included in my report, please feel free to let me know. IWS activites in the Midwest have been slow, but signifi cant. Hunt Tests Most signifi cantly, in September two Irishers qualifi ed and ran in the Master National held in MN. Christine Robertson ran “Nike”, Ch Realta’s Just Do It CDX MH TD RA WCX while Rosemary Sexton ran “Nova”, Ch Realta’s Supernova CD MH RN. Rosemary should have a write-up in another section of the newsletter. Congratulations to both Christine and Rosemary on their accomplishments with their Irishers! In other hunt test news, Am/Can Ch Saracen Hard Scrabble, “Angus”, started his quest for his “All-Around” by earning his fi rst JH leg at the Winnebago Club Hunt test Aug. 16, 2008. And although not a MidWest person, we are proud of Jodi Goff and Possum [Saracen’s Stylish Irish Possum MH WCX] on Possum’s MH, the 7th MH in the breed.

Conformation Results Again, though conformation shows were not numerous the Irishers had a steady contingent showing.

Mason City Kennel Club, Oct. 11, 2008 Congratulations to Debbie Patterson and Dre (Poole’s Ide Corteo du Tidemark co-owned with Greg Siner) on Dre’s Group 2. It is nice to see Debbie continuing her winning ways! A steady core of Irisher showed at the Wisconsin cluster of shows the last weekend in July. Th e results were:

Agility I do believe that Liz and Jen have achieved another fi rst in the breed – they have three generations competing against each other in agility. Liz reports that Toro (Ch. Mole End Breaking Th e Waves OA,OAJ,NF) has joined her mother (Ch. Mole End Incandescent AX,AXJ,OF) and grandmother (Ch MACH Mole End Luminous Drina CD,RN,OF) in the 20” Excellent class. She reports “It’s probably a little unusual to have 3 generations competing against each other. It’s certainly fun!” Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 13

Milwaukee Irish Fest Th e Milwaukee Irish Fest was held Aug. 14 – 17. We were well represented by Ruth Bruskiewitz with Milo, Sophie and her adorable puppy Seidi and by Lisa Schaitburger and Beacon. Th ey answered tons of questions and did a breed informational presentation, and obedience and agility demos throughout the festival.

Twin Cities Irish Water Spaniel Club Liz has again come up with a stunning Christmas card fundraiser for the TCIWSC. Liz can be contacted at [email protected] or call 651-430-1613 for information.

Pacifi c Northwest Regional Report By Colleen McDaniel It is with a heavy heart I report the passing of one of our NW IWS folks. Larry Babbs passed away this past week. He is survived by his wife Dana and their two dogs, Dorey the and Bos’N the IWS. Larry and Dana owned and operated a training facility south of Seattle called Paws-Ability. Th e 1997 IWSCA National Specialty was held at their facility. It is impossible to put a number to the number of people and dogs that Larry has had in his classes over the years. I certainly know many, many IWS owe their obedience titles to work done with Larry. He will be truly missed. Dana is going to try to continue operating Paws-Ability and the IWS community here will do what we can to help her in that endeavor. Right now their daughter is home from Germany and is getting a speed course in what it means to belong to a dog community. Hunting season has started. It is an amazing thing that happens at the IWSCOPS monthly meetings once hunting season is under way. Th e meeting is held and adjourned. But then there is the lingering over that night’s refreshments as the hunting stories start. Th e old dogs that are seasoned hunters still astounding their owners with remarkable retrieves or fi nds. Th e promising new pups that the owner swears that the skies lit up as the light went on when the pup fi gured out what it was bred to do. And somehow there always seems to be the favorite stories from the past years that need retelling. Th is is not a time to brag about show wins. In some ways it would almost feel sacrilegious to do so. Th is is a time for anyone listening to have an opportunity to see into ancient history. Th is is what it must have felt like to have the passion that drives men to work hard to develop that perfect and complete partner. Th is is the very roots of our beloved breed. I would like to introduce the rest of the country to some of our NW members that you might not know. Th e fi rst person that comes to mind is Rebecca Brooks. I fi rst met Rebecca about 2 ½ years ago when she contacted me about getting an IWS pup. I asked her to come over so she could meet some of the dogs (and of course I could meet her). She and her husband, Donald, showed up with four boys all about 8-11 or so. Wow, that is a lot of “boy energy” to subject an IWS pup to!! But I was very pleased with how the whole family interacted with the dogs and with each other. So, they made the “short’ list for the litter I had. Th is Irish Water Spaniel Club of America 14 Nov. / Dec. 2008

was going to be a pet as they already had a very full life. So when it came time to place the puppies and we had our big puppy party, they were here. During the course of the conversations I discovered that Rebecca’s sons showed sheep in 4-H. Hummm…. So I made a passing comment that they might be interested in showing the pup. But this was to be a family pet. Long story short: Th at pet became the fi rst of now three champions that Rebecca has fi nished. Brody was fi rst, followed by Ora and this past week in Del Valle she fi nished her third IWS, Seamus. Seamus’s registered name is CH Poole’s Ide Who’d A Th ought It. Th e family came up with that name upon bringing home their third IWS! Her son, Carl, won Grand Champion in Fitting and Showing with Ora at this year’s county fair. It was his fi rst time ever doing this! Rebecca is now secretary of IWSCOPS and we have so enjoyed her always pleasant and thoughtful ways. It is exciting to see people join the IWS family and do so in such a contributing way. She has been a very good ambassador of our breed at shows when approached by the public. She has worked very hard learning the whole “grooming” thing. She did have a bit of an advantage as she is a hair dresser by profession. But besides knowing how to wield a pair of scissors, one must also have an eye for conformation to become a really good groomer. Her observation skills have made her a very quick study. I hope you all have a chance to meet and chat with her at the 2009 specialty. I need to make a correction to last month’s notice about Martha Jordon and her dog, Gromit. I mentioned that he had completed a carting title. I would like to say it is a Novice Draft Dog title and this would be a fi rst for an IWS. And the late breaking news is that Lorece’s boy, Kev’N, fi nished his championship this weekend. Th is is the same boy that I reported last month had gone two for two in his pursuit of a Junior Hunter title. In addition, Marion McLeod’s Bianca (Cat’s Standing Ovation) earned her RA Rally Advanced and her aunt Rose (Cat’s American Beauty) recently earned legs on her RA. Th e IWSCOPS Christmas party is scheduled for December 6 this year. Th e club members look forward to this party as one of their favorite club functions. Th is year we know there will be some members coming from afar. Mary and Ross Th ompson are coming in from Maine. Deb Nezgoda will be here from Chicago. Brenda Groeneboer is trying to work out “monkey care” so she can be here. And we have an open invitation to anyone that would like to join us.

Junior’s Column By Audrey Krouse For most of my life, I have grown up with a dog in the family; we currently own a Pug named Spike. But it wasn’t until I moved into a new neighborhood, 2 years ago, that I learned about Irish Water Spaniels and dog shows. I had just moved into the new neighborhood and heard that someone’s dog had puppies. Because I love dogs so much, I went to see the puppies and met the Deckards. I helped raise the puppies and asked if I could show one of them when they were old enough. Th e Deckards were kind enough to let me co-own one of the puppies – Brody (Ch. Kimswick’s Remember When). Mrs. Deckard took me along to her handling class. While I learned to show dogs, I taught Brody how to be a show dog. I have been showing Brody and helping Mrs. Deckard show the other dogs for 2 years. I love the way Brody is always so excited to see me, when I visit him. In October, I showed one of Brody’s litter sisters and she won Winners Bitch and got her fi rst championship point. Some of my other favorite things to do are cooking and baking. Mrs. Deckard gave me a dog treat cookbook and bone-shaped cookie cutter and I have used the recipes to make treats and dog cookies for Brody. I enjoy making the duck-shaped cookies, but I don’t think any of the Water Spaniels care what shape the cookies are in; they are just glad to get homemade treats. I sometimes roll the cookie dough into small balls to use as bait at dog shows. I thought other Water Spaniel owners might enjoy making Christmas cookies for their dogs, so I’m sharing, with all of you, Brody’s favorite recipe – the one I use for cut-out cookies. Irish Water Spaniel Club of America 18 Nov. / Dec. 2008

Oatmeal Cookies with Peanut Butter 3 cups whole-wheat fl our ½ cup uncooked, rolled oats 2 teaspoons baking powder 1½ cups milk, at room temperature 1 tablespoon molasses 1¼ cups creamy-style peanut butter ¼ cup low-sodium chicken broth, or amount suffi cient for processing • Position oven rack in the center of the oven; preheat oven to 375º. Lightly grease or use parchment paper to line a cookie sheet or baking tray. • In a large bowl, using a fork or wire whisk, combine the fl our, rolled oats and baking powder. • In a medium bowl, using a wire whisk or electric mixer on medium speed, beat the milk, molasses, and peanut butter together until smooth. Stir in the chicken broth. • Using a large spoon, a spatula or your hands, combine the 2 mixes, blending until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the bowl and forms a soft dough. If the mixture seems a bit dry, add more chicken broth, a tablespoon at a time. • Turn dough onto a lightly fl oured, fl at surface, and using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to ¼ inch thick. Use any shape cookie cutter to cut out as many cookies as you can, reworking the scraps as you go. Th e dough will become stiff , as it is reworked. • Place cookies side-by-side on the prepared cookie sheets or baking trays. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the cookies appear very dry and the edges are light golden brown. Remove the trays from the oven and cool cookies to room temperature. Turn oven off . • When the cookies have cooled completely, put all of them on a single baking train and return them to the cooling oven. Leave them undisturbed, without opening the oven door, for 8 to 16 hours. Th is will dry the cookies.

Notes: Th is recipe makes 2 pounds of cookies. Some dogs may not tolerate the milk. Th is dough can also be rolled into 1” balls to be used as bait in the ring. It tastes better than liver when put in the handler’s mouth and the dogs like it just as much as liver. If making small cookies or bait, baking time is reduced. Cookies can be decorated with melted carob, which is not harmful to dogs.

A Very Big Deal By Pamela O. Kadlec Th e historical 2008 event was held in Hibbing, MN September 19-28 where 424 dogs qualifi ed and 287 dogs entered. You and your dog (this is defi nitely a team sport) have to Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 19

pass fi ve Master hunting retriever tests in a calendar year to qualify. A Master test consists of a series of tests that includes blind retrieves, honors and triple marks on land and water all of which are up to 100 yards in distance. Th e diff erence between a Master test and the Master National is that the dog has to stay focused for four or fi ve days since they will be asked to run up to seven tests in a week. So, what makes this Master National historic? It was the fi rst time that any IWS qualifi ed and to make it doubly great, there were two Irish lasses running: Ch Realta’s Just Do It CDX TD RA MH and Ch Realta’s Supernova CD RN MH. As of this article there are only seven IWS with Master Hunter titles though probably close to 100 with Junior Hunter titles. As much as the judges try to make the tests fair to all it is impossible to do so. Factors that can change a test are wind, sunlight or lack of it, rain and changes in cover – crossing a road, standing corn rows with mowed fi eld between, up and down hills – all these will aff ect the line a dog takes to and from the birds.

To break each factor down: A mark is when the dog sees the bird fall and she ‘marks the fall’ and remembers where the bird landed. A triple means there are three stations in the fi eld and each bird is launched one at a time until all three birds are on the ground or in the water. Th e dog has to remember each bird and pick them up as cleanly as possible. Walk-up simulates a jump-shooting situation where you have your dog at heel and don’t have time to settle the dog down before the fi rst bird is launched. You may blow a sit whistle to stop your dog from going before sent. A blind retrieve is when the dog does not see the bird fall and the handler directs the dog to the bird. Ideally you want a dog that will take a good ‘line’, that is to go straight out in the direction the dog is pointed. Th is is fairly straight forward in itself but when the judges set up the blind they take in factors such as wind, suction to the marks, cover changes, and suction to points of land or brush that may draw the dog away from the direct line. If a dog forgets a ‘marked’ retrieve the handler will handle the dog to the fall. Th is counts as a deduction and too many handles will eliminate the dog from competition. Th e following are the descriptions of the tests from Christine and Rosemary. Even though they did not complete the tests, all four ‘ladies’ did us all proud. I hope their example will encourage others to aim high to compete beyond the Junior and Senior levels. Who knows, maybe one day there will be at least ten Irish running at the Master Nationals!

Christine Robertson and Nike After three days of “master national” with Tom and Katie Quarles, I took a red-eye fl ight to Minneapolis with Nike on September 13th; within four hours of my 6 am arrival, Rosemary, Nike, Nova and I were out training with Rosemary’s pro Tim Springer and members of her training group-in the pouring rain!! Rosemary and I trained daily for the next fi ve days in a diff erent location each day and with four diff erent pros; the others training with us changed a bit as well. I met some wonderful people and dogs and instantly had a new cheering section by the time we drove up to Virginia, MN where the MN was to begin on the 21st. We continued our training with Tim and his group once or twice a day in several new areas around the MN site. I consider this training to be one of the highlights of my trip. Irish Water Spaniel Club of America 20 Nov. / Dec. 2008

WE had a banquet Friday night and the starting number was drawn by having a Lab retrieve bumpers with numbers on them; the number was #48 (Elly Muth got a special MN cap that said “I ran fi rst at the MN 2008”). Nike, #135 would run fi rst of the two IWS. Our fi rst test was a pheasant hunt with a land triple and a blind; the wind had changed almost 180 degrees from where it was when the test was set up resulting in a very diffi cult middle mark. Th e mark was at about 130 yards and scent + feathers from the live fl yer station drifted across the line to the bird resulting in the dogs hunting short of the mark. Approximately 78% of the dogs were handled on this mark; some more successfully than others. With a stiff wind at about 20 mph, dogs which got deep downwind handled poorly into the wind to the bird. I stopped Nike as soon as she turned into the scented, feathered area and got her to the bird under good control. Once we picked up the blind, the announcer told the gallery that Nike was the fi rst IWS to run in a MN and I got congrats from both judges and a round of applause from the gallery. Nike and I were called back to the second series which was a land quad; Nike had run her fi rst quad earlier that week in one of our training sessions. With the wind in our faces, only one dog was dropped in this series. On to the land/water series which was a triple with a walk-up and an honor; the weather conditions had deteriorated and at one point the test had to be stopped due to thunderstorms. Th e other group ran this test as their fi rst series and we were told that up to 90% of the dogs needed to be handled on the middle water bird; we ran the test as a walk-up and Nike never saw this bird go down. I distracted her with my handling of the “gun” and she ended up having a big hunt on the fl yer on the right (I didn’t handle her as I knew I had to handle her on the unseen middle bird). I lined her up for the middle bird, sent her and handled her when she started to veer away from the water. Once again, I maintained control; Nike answered ever whistle and took every cast, but that big hunt on the fl yer did us in and we were not invited back to the fourth series. Before we left on Th ursday, Rosemary and I took a look at the two water series now being run; both were doubles with blinds and very “do-able”. Th e other land/water test was described as a double with a diversion bird which was also very “do-able”. While I’m disappointed that we didn’t fi nish this test, I am glad to have participated. I’m not sure I’m ready to go to Texas next year to run in another MN though. I thought all tests were quite fair and no more diffi cult than the tests we regularly see at weekend master tests.

Rosemary Sexton and Nova Qualifying for the Master National and Qualifying All Age have long been two of my goals. Having the right dog at the right time turned that dream into a reality. Watching Nova progress through her MH title with relative ease going 5/9 before the age of fi ve gave me the incentive that I needed. She was 5/7 by mid-May earning her a spot at the 2008 MN. To put the icing on the cake, Nova then went on to earn a fi rst in an Owner Handler Qualifying All Age stake to solidify those dreams (the second Q that we have ever run). As a friend so aptly termed it, the lab ceiling had been broken through. After qualifying for the MN I became very excited about the possibility of doing this with other IWS owners. Christine and Nike were, of course, fi rst on my list. Although it didn’t take much coaxing to get Christine on board, I was unsuccessful convincing the others (maybe Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 21

next year). Once Nike was qualifi ed it was set... for the fi rst time ever the Irish Water Spaniel would be represented at the Master National, not by one but, by two IWS, half sisters. As the breeder of both girls I was thrilled and also grateful to Christine for all of her hard work and enthusiasm throughout the years. Training three days a week for much of the summer prepared us for most scenarios. If I had to do anything diff erently it would simply be to continue testing. Nova is a very “high” dog and I was advised against putting her in test situations, though, in retrospect I feel that we would have both benefi ted. I know that I would have gained more experience in the type of situations that you rarely train for but that simply happen in test situations. In the week prior to the MN, training became a daily ritual. With Christine and Nike in tow we set out to further prepare ourselves by training in inclement weather and at diff erent sites and with diff erent pros almost daily. What fun to train and not feel guilty about it! Th e starting dog was determined at the welcome banquet by a clever method of elimination as described by Christine. With #48 starting, Nike would start the Irish off . Unfortunately, the test did not go as either of us had hoped. Nova was one of 24 dogs to go out in the fi rst series after diffi culty with the long middle memory bird. When the test was designed on Friday the winds were from the north. By Sunday, high winds were coming from the SE creating a very wide scent/feather cone across the path going out to the middle bird and continuing behind the second gunner’s station. It only worsened as the test proceeded and Nova was approximately the 100th dog to run. A “high” dog in this scenario was a detriment. Th e wind, factored in with the cover and terrain, made this a deceptively diffi cult test. Watching the second series was frustrating (what can I say) as only one of the dogs that ran it went out. Oh how I wanted to run my dog. Th e wind was in the dogs’ faces so the birds were hard to miss. Th e third series was a land/water series (another triple), similar in concept to the fi rst series. However, this was a walk up and the long middle bird (fi rst bird down) was thrown from a station that was completely hidden from view by a tall pine and out onto an island. Th e dogs had very little time to really focus on that bird as it was followed by an out of order fl ier. Th e test became progressively more diffi cult as the day wore on due to rain, wind changes and deteriorating lighting conditions. By the time it was Nike’s turn to run the lighting and wind had signifi cantly changed. Th is series was fi nally called and a bye dog was needed so that the last dog running could honor. Nova was that dog and I was thrilled to see her do a bang up job even under those adverse conditions. If only.... Watching both of the water scenarios prior to our departure, Christine and I were both confi dent that we could have done this test in its entirety. We never felt out of place and we both know that our dogs have what it takes. It was a great experience and I hope that there will be more IWS to represent us in the future. Just do it!

Blastomycosis By F.R. (Rick) Hayward Th is article fi rst appeared in Dogs In Canada. It is reprinted with permission from the author. You’ve no doubt heard of heartworm disease and likely have your dog on medication or regular testing. But have you ever heard of blastomycosis? In fact, if you live or travel in certain parts of Canada and the United States, the risk of your dog contracting blastomycosis is likely much greater than it is for contracting heartworm. More concerning, there isn’t a vaccine for blastomycosis and if the disease is not treated in its early stages, it can be fatal. “Blasto” is a fungal disease found in humans, dogs, oc casionally cats, and other mammals. It is often misdiagnosed as a viral infection or cancer. Your dog would most likely get it by inhaling spores from the Blasto myces dermatitidis fungus. Blastomycosis grows in the environment as a mould, in warm, acid sandy soils and rotted wood near water. It thrives in the body as a yeast. Blastomycosis is thought to be found mostly in North America. Th e most-frequent cases in Canada have been re ported in Kenora, Ont., and along the shores of Georgian Bay, especially around Point au Baril and Sans Souci. In the U.S., cases have been profi led in both humans and animals in northern Wisconsin, especially around the Eagle River, and in the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio River valleys, and Minnesota. An informative web site – blastomycosis.ca – started and administered by Lisa Schuyler and dedicated to the memory of her Golden Retriever ‘Surf,’ is a godsend for those of us who found it diffi cult to get straight an swers about the disease. Th e site indicates there were as many as 90 dog cases reported in previous years in Kenora, as well as 309 human cases found in Ontario between 1994 and 2003. In Wisconsin, blastomycosis is a reportable human disease. Th is is not to suggest a panic, but rather to point out that blastomycosis is prevalent in certain areas. Your pet – and you – could be at risk. Because there is no vaccine for blastomycosis, the best defenses are awareness and early treatment. Th is means recognizing the symptoms and taking im mediate action.

Symptoms and diagnosis After exposure to blastomycosis, it may be weeks or months before your dog shows symptoms. If a dog in hales only a few spores and is healthy, his immune system might be able to eliminate the spores. However, if the number is great, or if the dog is immune-suppressed or fi ghting another disease, the spores will have a greater chance of tak ing hold in the lungs. A diagnosis of blastomycosis requires a positive sample of the blasto yeast, taken from a lymph node, skin lesion, lung wash, or material coughed up by the dog. However, there are many false negatives and false positives when trying to diagnose blastomycosis. A chest X-ray will confi rm the symptoms, but not defi nitively diagnose the condition. About 65 per cent of dogs diagnosed with blastomycosis survive. Because the treatment is long, complicated and ex pensive with a potential for serious side eff ects, some own ers elect to euthanize aff ected pets. In treated dogs, sur vival rates are approximately 85 per cent, but up to 25 per cent suff er relapses. Dogs with brain or eye involvement have a worse prognosis. Bosun’s story My own experience with blastomycosis followed a glorious summer spent on my boat on Georgian Bay with my Irish Water Spaniel ‘Bosun.’ Bosun began coughing just after the Labour Day weekend. I initially thought it was kennel cough, and gave it a few days to see if it would clear up. When it did not, I took Bosun to my veterinarian, who also thought it was kennel cough; we agreed to give it a few more days. When the cough did not clear, I returned and the then-visiting locum veterinarian prescribed Baytril® for two weeks, assuming it to be either kennel cough or a viral infection. Both vets knew the dog had spent the sum mer at Georgian Bay and did not seem to have an ap petite. By then, he’d lost 10 per cent of his body weight and had a temperature of 103.8°F. I returned two weeks later and reported to another veterinarian in the practice that Bosun continued to cough, was now very depressed, lethargic, without ap petite and beginning to show signs of lameness, and he had swollen lymph glands. Bosun had by then lost an additional fi ve per cent of his original body weight. An X-ray was taken and based on a large consolidation in Bosun’s lung, the veterinarian diagnosed the condition as aspirational pneumonia. I had done some re search on my own and asked about blastomycosis, es pecially since we had been in what is reported to be one of the hot spots, but my veterinarian did not think that it was blasto because the X-rays usually appear to have a puff - or cloud-like image. A variety of antibiot ics were prescribed; however, three days later, Bosun was continuing to worsen. I decided to ring Sue West, D.V.M., at the Georgian Animal Hospital in Parry Sound, Ont., where blasto is seen more often than in Toronto. Dr. West advised me not to rule out blasto based on the X-ray because the disease shows up in many diff erent ways, and off ered to speak to my veterinarian about her experiences with dogs seen in Parry Sound. Rather, my vet suggested ad ditional tests. Two days later, I noticed lesions on Bosun’s feet – about the only classic symptom of blastomycosis he had not yet displayed. I returned Bosun to the vet and insisted that treatment for blasto begin immediately while samples of the fl uid from the sores were sent for testing. I had read in my research that time is critical, as the disease is aggressive and can spread to the eyes, the joints and the brain. I wasn’t about to wait an other three days for tests to return. Treatment began, using Sporonox®, one of three pos sible alternatives; however, the next morning, Bosun could not walk. I took him to the Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Toronto, where he was put on breathing support, and additional X-rays were taken of his lungs. Th e attending veterinarian did not think that Bosun had blasto either, based on the X-ray’s appearance, how ever she agreed to maintain his doses of Sporonox while we waited for the tests to be returned in two days. When the results arrived, I was not surprised to learn that Bosun had blastomycosis, and that the disease was in an advanced stage. Th e then-immediate action taken by VEC internist Dawn Martin, D.V.M., D.V.Sc., Dip. A.C.V.I.M., and the superb care under her supervision saved my dog’s life. Sadly however, fi ve days later, Bosun lost his sight. We saw a specialist in Toronto who confi rmed that he was clinically blind and suggested removal of his eyes; only 20 per cent of his retina was attached. In stead, I took him to the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, where Nick Whelan, B.V.Sc., M.V.Sc., M.A.C.V.Sc., Irish Water Spaniel Club of America Nov. / Dec. 2008 31

Dip.A.C.V.C.P., Dip.A.C.V.O., researched and performed an experimental procedure injecting a steroid and anti-fungal drug into the vitreous of Bosun’s eyes – the large gelatinous area that sits behind the lens and helps hold the retina in place. Th ree months later, Bosun’s eyesight has almost completely returned to normal, and under the continued care of Dr. Dawn Martin and the VEC, he has made an almost complete recovery. At the time of writing, Bosun was expected to be completely free of the disease within the next few months.

All proceeds generated from this raffl e will used to support the specialty, held in Auburn, Washington on May 3-8, 2009. Th e quilt is a warm and cozy depiction of Irish Water Spaniels in their various poses. (To see a picture of the quilt, keep an eye out on www.iwsca2009.com – a picture should be posted soon.) From the artist: “Many of the pictures of Irish Water Spaniels are based on the pictures in the 2006 calendar put out by the IWSCOPS. Other poses are based on observations of Irish Water Spaniels that I know personally, and one is taken from a tile in my brother’s kitchen. Th e brown color scheme was the biggest challenge. I had to choose fabric that would represent shadows, light, and shape on the fi gures of the dogs. If I’d chosen single-color fabrics in brown, the dogs would have come out looking like blobs.” Th e artist estimates the retail value of the approximately 85” square quilt to be about $1,500 to $2,000.
