$30 Lottery Ticket Policy Announced
PRESS RELEASE 4 March 2020 $30 LOTTERY TICKET POLICY ANNOUNCED The Book of Mormon today announced a ticket lottery, in which a limited number of $30 tickets will be sold by ballot before each performance at The Civic, Auckland. The lottery will commence from the preview on Friday 6 March at 7:30pm. Entries will only be accepted in person, on the form provided, at the box office beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance. Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $30 each. Only one entry is allowed per person for a maximum of two tickets. Entries are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the ballot and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Tickets are subject to availability. The Book of Mormon, Broadway’s smash hit musical written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, has now been seen by more than 17 million people worldwide and played more than 1100 performances across Australia. Since opening at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in January 2017, the Tony®, Olivier®, Grammy® and Helpmann® award-winning show has broken box office records throughout its incredible tour across the country. Following the one year run at the Princess Theatre, The Book of Mormon transferred to the Sydney Lyric Theatre in February 2018 where it played for a further year. As Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) continues to appear as an ever-growing topic of interest in American media, there is a gap in discourse that addresses the implications of performances of Mormon beliefs and lifestyles as performed by both members of the Church and non-believers. In this thesis, I closely examine HBO’s Big Love television series, the LDS Church’s “I Am a Mormon” media campaign, Mormon “Mommy Blogs” and the personal performance of Mormons in everyday life. By analyzing these performances through the lenses of Stuart Hall’s theories of encoding/decoding, Benedict Anderson’s writings on imagined communities, and H. L. Goodall’s methodology for the new ethnography the aim of this thesis is to fill in some small way this discursive and scholarly gap. The analysis of performances of the Mormon belief system through these lenses provides an insight into how the media teaches and shapes its audience’s ideologies through performance. iv For Caity and Emily. -

Satire, Race, and Modern Cartoons: Boondocks vs. South Park Stanford University Communication Department June 4, 2011 Melanie J Murphy Satire is primarily seen in literary form where irony, sarcasm and ridicule are used in order to expose, or denounce vice or folly with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement. In addition to satire as a literary genre, we have seen an increase in the use of satire in American television as well. Popular cartoons such as the Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, and the Boondocks are known to have created controversy through episodes that feature satire on political, social, and racial issues. While all four of these cartoons have satirical content, the Boondocks and South Park dedicate the majority of their satire each episode toward one main issue. It would be interesting to see if (1) there are racial differences between how whites and blacks view both shows and (2) if the satire featured in these two shows actually exposes society’s foolishness, possibly leading to improvement. It is our hypothesis that through social identification theory, groups will be made through the similarity of race (Tajfel, 1982). This will allow for those who identify with either race, to feel more positively toward the show of their own race. Comedy Central’s South Park is a satirical, animated show, made for mature audiences created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Although the show is thought by some to be incredibly offensive, the creators explain that there is an underlying moral lesson. The show follows four characters that live in the fictional predominantly white town of South Park, Colorado. -

Anderson Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee Advisor: Carl Burgchardt Eric Aoki Kathleen Kiefer ABSTRACT A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS In this analysis, I examine Mormon cinema and how it functions on a rhetorical level. I specifically focus on missionary films, or movies that are framed by LDS missionary narratives. Through an analysis of two LDS missionary films, namely Richard Dutcher’s God’s Army (2000) and Mitch Davis’ The Other Side of Heaven (2001), I uncover two rhetorical approaches to fostering spirituality. In my first analysis, I argue that God’s Army presents two pathways to spirituality: one which produces positive consequences for the characters, and the other which produces negative consequences. I call these pathways, respectively, ascending and descending spirituality, and I explore the rhetorical implications of this framing. In my second analysis, I contend that The Other Side of Heaven creates a rhetorical space wherein the audience may transform. Specifically, the film constructs a “Zion,” or a heaven on earth, with three necessary components, which coincide perfectly with established LDS teachings: God, people, and place. These three elements invite the audience to accept that they are imperfect, yet they can improve if they so desire. Ultimately, by comparing my findings from both films, I argue that the films’ rhetorical strategies are well constructed to potentially reinforce beliefs for Mormon audiences, and they also may invite non-Mormons to think more positively about LDS teachings. -

NEWS RELEASE FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6 ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY NAMES SEAN DANIELS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Sean Daniels, who in his youth was inspired toward a career in theatre after attending Arizona Theatre Company productions with his Mesa-based family, has come full circle by being named ATC’s new Artistic Director. Daniels spent the last five years as Artistic Director at Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, MA. Previously, he served as Associate Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville, home of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Both theatres are members of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). “One of the first shows I ever saw, Our Town, was at Arizona Theatre Company. I remember it like it was yesterday. It changed me forever, and decades later I’m making theatre around the world because of it,” Daniels said. “It’s an honor to give back to a place that has given me so much, and for every kid who walks into this building to know that they can someday be the Artistic Director.” Daniels’ family tree includes the Udall family, who have long been part of Arizona’s history “and I’m excited to add to that,” he said. “My Great Grandfather, Jesse Udall, was Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, my Great Uncle, John, and his son, Nick, were Phoenix mayors. I want to continue my family’s dedication to making Arizona a leader in our country. And, I’m excited to get back to owning a house with a pool!” Daniels also is related to Mo Udall, a popular Arizona Congressman who ran for president and was known for his wry humor.
