NEWS RELEASE FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6 ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY NAMES SEAN DANIELS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Sean Daniels, who in his youth was inspired toward a career in theatre after attending Arizona Theatre Company productions with his Mesa-based family, has come full circle by being named ATC’s new Artistic Director. Daniels spent the last five years as Artistic Director at Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, MA. Previously, he served as Associate Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville, home of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Both theatres are members of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). “One of the first shows I ever saw, Our Town, was at Arizona Theatre Company. I remember it like it was yesterday. It changed me forever, and decades later I’m making theatre around the world because of it,” Daniels said. “It’s an honor to give back to a place that has given me so much, and for every kid who walks into this building to know that they can someday be the Artistic Director.” Daniels’ family tree includes the Udall family, who have long been part of Arizona’s history “and I’m excited to add to that,” he said. “My Great Grandfather, Jesse Udall, was Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, my Great Uncle, John, and his son, Nick, were Phoenix mayors. The pilot and 13 episodes are true to the comic books (down to the World War II setting) and Lynda Carter was perfect casting - she's wholesome and sexy at the same time. Extras include Carter's commentary and a documentary. Cold Mountain / NAMBLA. The minimal extras The English Patient include brief comments from creators Trey Parker and Matt **Miramax,/*** $29.99 each Stone. Both of these sweeping epic Blazing Saddles: films use war as a setting for romantic tales ("Cold 30th Anniversary Mountain" takes place during the Civil War, "English" during ***Warner Bros., $19.97 World War I1). And the best element of both is their music. Both this Western spoof and the Gabriel Yared composed both brilliant "Young Frankenstein" scores, with a delicate but came out in 1974, making this stirring approach for "English the peak year for Mel Brooks. It received 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, and 16 Tony nominations, the most nominations in Broadway history. It won the Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. In his review, Ben Brantley writes: “Yes, it really is that good.” It’s one of the most talked about Broadway shows since “The Book of Mormon” in 2011. Why? It’s a theatrical rarity: a critically acclaimed work, written by a young composer, that’s making a cultural impact far beyond Broadway’s 40 theaters. That it’s told through the language and rhythms of hip-hop and R&B — genres that remain mostly foreign to the musical theater tradition — has put it in contention to redefine what an American musical can look and sound like. The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards, is making its second appearance in Fresno. I’m Mike Gibson of Fresno Lexus and as the title sponsor of the Broadway Series, I want to extend my personal warm welcome to subscribers and patrons to these performances. Whether you are a subscriber, returning patron, or at our beloved Saroyan Theatre for the first time, thank you for coming! While we are on the cusp of beginning our programming for the 18-19 season, I did want to pass along some exciting news. At the time of my writing this letter, our subscription base for the upcoming season is at an all-time high. I personally am so grateful of Fresno’s response to Lexus Broadway in Fresno. And our 18-19 season is spectacular. Our first show, Disney’s The Lion King, is playing in late November and early December. Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this show is one of the most beloved, and celebrated, musicals. Directed by Julie Taymor, with music and lyrics by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice, this show is one everyone should see and we are excited to be part of its first Fresno engagement. Missionary Position: Mormon Hits the Spot at PPAC Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi Storming into Providence to baptize the unbelievers is the return of The Book of Mormon, the insanely irreverent Trey Parker/Matt Stone/Robert Lopez concoction that upends the classic buddy quest (and, yes, Lord of the Rings is certainly referenced) and manages to skewer both America and religion in one fell swoop. Two young Mormons are sent out to carry the message of the Latter-Day Saints in an impoverished Ugandan village and the resulting two hours are not only hilarious, but great musical theater to boot. As Parker and Stone told Limelight in 2017, “You have to start with songs. And if the songs start really speaking to you and telling a story then you know you’ve got something.” And that’s the crux of Mormon’s success – these songs are polished, sophisticated, hummable musical theater delivered by a seasoned cast of touring pros, some of whom have been on this tour for years. Some touring productions feature not much more than polished glassy-eyed road warriors with rictus grins that barely hide their lack of enthusiasm at having to do a matinee in Tulsa. Mormon’s cast is clearly engaged and having the time of their lives, making the sweet, over the top sacrilege even more desirable. The three expository opening numbers, “Hello”, “Two by Two” and “You and Me (But Mostly Me)” are crisp (aided by exemplary sound engineering, at least on the Wednesday performance, which is no small feat given the size of the Mormon cast) and filled with precision choreography and performance.
