Printed in the U.S.A. letter from the chairman s Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Palace A Theater, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this organization, and enthusiastic about its future. Committed to fostering the Palace’s success, the Board of Directors is currently working on a new three-year Strategic Business Plan, which will chart out the artistic, organizational, and financial goals for the theater. Focusing on expanded arts and educational programming, marketing, capital projects, and financial development, the objective of the plan is to continue expanding our current entertainment initiatives and ensure financial sustainability and growth for the Palace for years to come. Artistic success and economic stability help us provide a welcoming stage for both local and national arts groups. While we consistently seek out top-tier productions and popular artists, we also look to foster the next generation of talent, through our partnership with the Waterbury Arts Magnet Schools and our own educational programs. As the arts grow, so do the surrounding communities. The Palace Theater is proud to serve the geographical communities of not only Greater Waterbury, but also much of New Haven, Litchfield and Fairfield Counties. In addition, we serve the statewide artistic community, with our dedication to providing the highest quality entertainment on our Main Stage and in our Poli Club. Thank you for supporting the Palace, attending productions, and providing financial support as well. Without you, our mission of serving as a performing arts center and community gathering place could not be achieved. I am happy to help steward the organization for your enjoyment, and I am delighted to welcome you here. Sincerely, Peter J. Jacoby, MD, FACEP Chairman of the Board palace theater 9 10 palace theater letter from the ceo Welcome to the Palace Theater! While we are still enjoying this season’s presentations on our beautiful stage, it is my great pleasure to announce the 2019-2020 Webster Broadway Series! This upcoming season’s shows inspire us to dream, imagine and laugh, and we hope that you will be as excited about seeing these shows as we are to bring them here. With a glorious new production and thrilling musical score, the world’s most popular musical, Les Misérables, will be coming to the Palace for eight performances in December! From “I Dreamed a Dream” to “One Day More,” the show tells an enthralling story of love, loss, forgiveness and redemption. The 2019-2010 season begins in October with A Bronx Tale, Chazz Palminteri’s autobiographical streetwise musical. This unforgettable story of family and loyalty shows a young man’s search for his own American dream in the Bronx of the 1960s. In a Palace Theater first, we are including a non-musical offering in our season this November, the award-winning smash comedy The Play That Goes Wrong. Part murder mystery, part backstage farce, this play shows us the hilarious (and sometimes nightmarish!) behind-the-scenes happenings of the theater world. Finding Neverland will whisk away the winter blues in March, as we follow J.M. Barrie to the make-believe world of Peter Pan, Wendy and Captain Hook. Based on the film of the same name, this show explores one writer’s dreams and the people who inspired him to create his most beloved work. Our May show will immerse you in post-war Paris, where romance and youthful optimism reign. An American in Paris, inspired by the Academy Award-winning film, features George Gershwin’s soaring melodies matched with spectacular dance sequences in a tale of friendship, art, and love. With more offerings to be added to our season in the coming weeks, we hope that the 2019-2020 Webster Broadway Series will see you back at the Palace, sharing a laugh (and perhaps a tear) with us as we Dream a Dream together. • Religion As a Role: Decoding Performances of Mormonism in the Contemporary United States
RELIGION AS A ROLE: DECODING PERFORMANCES OF MORMONISM IN THE CONTEMPORARY UNITED STATES Lauren Zawistowski McCool A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Dr. Scott Magelssen, Advisor Dr. Jonathan Chambers Dr. Lesa Lockford © 2012 Lauren Zawistowski McCool All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Scott Magelssen, Advisor Although Mormons have been featured as characters in American media since the nineteenth century, the study of the performance of the Mormon religion has received limited attention. As Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) continues to appear as an ever-growing topic of interest in American media, there is a gap in discourse that addresses the implications of performances of Mormon beliefs and lifestyles as performed by both members of the Church and non-believers. In this thesis, I closely examine HBO’s Big Love television series, the LDS Church’s “I Am a Mormon” media campaign, Mormon “Mommy Blogs” and the personal performance of Mormons in everyday life. By analyzing these performances through the lenses of Stuart Hall’s theories of encoding/decoding, Benedict Anderson’s writings on imagined communities, and H. L. Goodall’s methodology for the new ethnography the aim of this thesis is to fill in some small way this discursive and scholarly gap. The analysis of performances of the Mormon belief system through these lenses provides an insight into how the media teaches and shapes its audience’s ideologies through performance. iv For Caity and Emily.

THESIS A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS Submitted by Sky L. Anderson Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee Advisor: Carl Burgchardt Eric Aoki Kathleen Kiefer ABSTRACT A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS In this analysis, I examine Mormon cinema and how it functions on a rhetorical level. I specifically focus on missionary films, or movies that are framed by LDS missionary narratives. Through an analysis of two LDS missionary films, namely Richard Dutcher’s God’s Army (2000) and Mitch Davis’ The Other Side of Heaven (2001), I uncover two rhetorical approaches to fostering spirituality. In my first analysis, I argue that God’s Army presents two pathways to spirituality: one which produces positive consequences for the characters, and the other which produces negative consequences. I call these pathways, respectively, ascending and descending spirituality, and I explore the rhetorical implications of this framing. In my second analysis, I contend that The Other Side of Heaven creates a rhetorical space wherein the audience may transform. Specifically, the film constructs a “Zion,” or a heaven on earth, with three necessary components, which coincide perfectly with established LDS teachings: God, people, and place. These three elements invite the audience to accept that they are imperfect, yet they can improve if they so desire. Ultimately, by comparing my findings from both films, I argue that the films’ rhetorical strategies are well constructed to potentially reinforce beliefs for Mormon audiences, and they also may invite non-Mormons to think more positively about LDS teachings.
