I joined NHS Western Isles in March 2020 as Medical Director for a number of reasons; not just to gain an interesting and promoted post, but also for the lifestyle that the Western Isles has to offer, from its scenic beaches to its more peaceful, safe and tranquil way of life. My role as Medical Director has allowed me to continue to promote innovation and transformation within health and social care. The islands have an appetite for change, but also an enthusiasm to maintain their character while developing resilient health and social care services for their residents. Email [email protected] 2 Job Advert OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY Consultant Salary £84,984 – £112,925 per annum Plus Distant Island Allowance £1,074 per annum Permanent The Western Isles is located 30 miles off the North West coast of Scotland, and is 130 miles long from the Butt of Lewis in the North to the Isle of Barra in the South. The population of the Western Isles is approximately 26,500. The Health Board employs over 1,000 staff. There is easy access to the mainland, with regular flights between Stornoway and Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness and ferry services to Ullapool. Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register, with Licence to Practise, or be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the date of interview. Applicants would be fully supported whilst working toward this. The post is for 12 PAs (8 PAs, 2 SPAs plus 2 EPAs per week) subject to agreement of a satisfactory job plan, plus an 8% availability allowance. However, the successful candidate may decide to work 10 programmed activities a week on an annualised basis, and be granted an additional 8 weeks leave a year which will be recognised in his/her Job Plan. The Terms and Conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004. If you do not hold permanent residential status in the UK or an EU passport, you should be eligible to apply under the current immigration process for this post. It is your responsibility to ensure your eligibility and entitlement to work in the UK in line with UK Border Agency/Immigration rules and regulations. THE WESTERN ISLES The Western Isles lie approximately 30 miles off the West Coast of Scotland and consist of many small islands in the Outer Hebrides. The main ones being Lewis, Harris, the Uists and Barra, with a total population of 26,500. They are easily accessible by ferry from Ullapool, Skye and Oban and by air from Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is a bus service to Inverness from Ullapool which runs in conjunction with the ferry timetables and links with rail services from Inverness. Stornoway is the administrative “capital” of the Western Isles. It has a population of approximately 8,000 and has all the facilities one would expect to find in a town of this size. There are many primary schools on the islands as well as secondary schools. They are all well equipped and have a good reputation for academic achievement. Adult education is provided through the Lewis Castle Technical College which is part of the University of the Highlands & Islands. Degree courses are available at the College. 2. WESTERN ISLES HOSPITAL The Western Isles Hospital is a general rural hospital serving the Outer Hebrides area. The hospital was opened in 1992, is modern and well equipped. The main hub hospital is in Stornoway with 96 beds covering specialties in General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Psychiatry, Paediatrics and Radiology. The Hospital has an up-to-date laboratory service covering the main disciplines of haematology, microbiology and clinical chemistry with ready access to more specialised investigations at other specialised laboratories in Scotland. The Radiology Department is modern with fully digitized imaging, ultrasound, Doppler scanning and a 64-slice CT scanner. The department is fully integrated with PACS. The obstetric ultrasound scans are performed by trained sonographers with direct links with the Fetal Medicine Ultrasound Department in the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow. Locally based consultant services General Medicine General Surgery, Orthopaedics Anaesthesia Paediatrics Obstetrics and gynaecology Psychiatry Radiology Dental Services 2 Visiting Consultant Services Respiratory Medicine Rheumatology Dermatology Oncology Neurology Ophthalmology Renal Medicine Otolaryngology Urology Child & Adolescent Mental Health Tertiary referrals The main referral centres are in Inverness and Glasgow, but hospitals in Edinburgh and other hospitals in Scotland are used when necessary in accordance with established referral management system. Outpatient Facilities There are excellent outpatient facilities within the hospital. Visiting consultants from Inverness and Glasgow (see above) support various subspecialties. 3. DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY The current bed status for this Unit is: a) Labour Suite - 2 delivery rooms well equipped for instrumental deliveries and neonatal resuscitation. One of them contains the berthing pool b) 6 Combined antenatal and postnatal beds c) Early pregnancy assessment unit. d) In-patient gynaecological beds in a surgical ward e) Day Surgery Unit with 8 beds in a mixed specialty ward. f) Pre-operative assessment unit located in out patients’ department. Consultants: Dr Grazyna Stanczuk (long term locum); Dr Dapo Erenle (long term locum) Doctors in training: Foundation Year 2 x 1; GPST x 1 (in Mixed Specialties rotation) Undergraduate/Postgraduate Training The Western Isles Hospital has an active and enthusiastic undergraduate and postgraduate training programme. 3 Medical students from the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh and elective medical students from other Scottish Universities are regularly attached to the department throughout the year. The post holder will be expected to contribute in teaching medical students and in training junior staff, as a Clinical Supervisor and also as an Educational Supervisor should the need arise. Regular Monthly Combined Mortality and Morbidity meetings are well attended by staff. Monthly Combined Divisional Teaching meetings give each department an opportunity to present to the wider audience. The Consultant Committee meeting is convened on a quarterly basis. There is a weekly MDT cancer network meeting with the Western Infirmary in Glasgow via videolink. Research The Board encourages and where possible gives assistance to the pursuit of research by consultant staff. 4. THE POST The post-holder will be involved in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based care and treatment for the inpatients and outpatients at the Western Isles Hospital and Uist and Barra Hospital and other sites as required by the Board. The appointee will be expected to cross-cover for absent colleague. The post-holder will be expected to devote time to non-clinical service development for the Board, such as Audit Design, Clinical Education, Risk Assessment etc the particular area to be agreed on the basis of previous experience, aptitude and job planning requirements. The post-holder is expected to implement agreed national and local standards and guidelines in obstetrics and gynaecology practice. It is expected that the post-holder will deliver person centred high quality care, with particular emphasis on developing a special interest to complement the existing interests. The post-holder is required to effectively participate in and promote all appropriate Scottish Patient Safety Programme measures and other relevant quality and safety initiatives The post-holder will participate in the RCOG continuing medical education activities to obtain the required CME credits as part of their continuing professional development.
