    EDVARD GRIEG (1843 - 1907) When Edvard Grieg grew up, Bergen was a small and busy European town. All through its past as a Hanseatic city, Bergen had established a net of connections that made it the only continental Norwegian city. The main business was the trade with fish and other products typical for the coast. There was a close contact with the rest of Europe, a fact that is easily retraceable in the origin of the bergener. Most of the families within the city limits had ancestors in Denmark, Germany, Scotland, England, the Netherlands and other European nations. Bergen was also a meltingpot for the population along the Norwegian coast. Edvard Griegøs family was a typical Bergen- family: His great grandfather Alexander Greig (later changed to Grieg) came to the city from Cairnbulg close to Aberdeen in Scotland in the 1770s. He founded the family business, which was trade with dried fish and lobster across the North sea. The raising of a child in a bourgeois family in the 19th century Norway often included teaching of music or other forms of art. Edvard Grieg´s grandparents were active in the society of music "Musikkselskapet Harmonien", one of the worlds oldest orchestras, founded in 1765. Edvard Grieg was also so lucky to have the best piano teacher in Bergen as a mother. Gesine Hagerup had studied at the musicconservatory in Hamburg, Germany, an education that usually was offered only to men. She played with "Harmonien" and at chamber music concerts in Bergen. CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen 15th of June 1843, in the family´s house in Strandgaten 152.

Allegro assai Program Notes Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten Benjamin Britten, born 1913 and died 1976 in Suffolk, was an English composer, pianist, and conductor. Britten began studying music from a young age and at the age of twelve, he began to study with composer Frank Bridge. Britten later entered the Royal College of Music in London where he studied with John Ireland and Arthur Benjamin. Britten’s work began to earn international recognition in 1937 after the premiere of Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge for string orchestra. While in the United States from 1939 to 1942, Britten received commissions to write several operas, some of which are considered to be the best English operas since those of 17th century composer Henry Purcell. Britten was the conductor and artistic director of the English Opera Group which led to the creation of the Aldeburgh Festival in 1947— one of the most influential music festivals in England. Although Britten is most known for his compositions featuring vocalists, he has a few instrumental pieces which remain popular today. Some of these instrumental works include his three string quartets, The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Symphony in D Major for Cello and Orchestra, and one of his earlier works, Simple Symphony for strings, composed from 1933 to 1934.

    Sets versus Opuses: A Novel Approach to Programming Edvard Grieg's Piano Works Gloria Cook, DMA and Megan Mascarenhas, BA Rollins College, Department of Music Winter Park, Florida, USA Edvard Grieg, a composer best known for his incidental music the "Peer Gynt Suite" and the "Klaverkonsert i a-moll" ("Concerto in A minor"), composed over 300 works that are identified by 74 opuses and over 150 pieces of piano music that are without opus numbers. Of those with opus numbers, over 20 were written for the piano. When it comes to performing Grieg’s piano works on stage, there are no standard staples. Leif Ove Andsnes, one of the most recorded Grieg artists, has set a good example of how to present Grieg’s piano works by selecting individual piano pieces from "Lyriske stykker" ("Lyric Pieces") opuses 12, 38, 47, 54, 62, 65, 68 that represent 31 years of Grieg's compositional output. Grieg scholar and pianist, Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, recorded the complete piano works of Grieg by opuses, including pieces from his earliest to latest compositional periods. These two artists have certainly given us two very different approaches to performing Grieg’s piano pieces. As a concert pianist, Grieg toured Europe performing and promoting his own works. Historical documents from these concert tours reveal that he had a unique way of unraveling his piano opuses and regrouping the individual pieces, highlighting not only his favorite pieces but also his favorite sets of pieces that he performed as a group. His practice of grouping individual piano pieces into sets must have made it easier for him to showcase his keyboard works and communicate his musical language to his audience.
