Nationals Recall RHP Joe Ross Nationals recall RHP Joe Ross Posted by TBNDavid On 04/20/2017 The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher Joe Ross from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday and placed left-handed pitcher Sammy Solis on the 10-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Ross, who will start for Washington on Wednesday night vs. Atlanta at SunTrust Park, joins the Nationals for his first Major League assignment of the season. The right-hander has posted a 12-10 record and a 3.52 ERA over his first two seasons in the Major Leagues (35 games, 32 starts). The former first-round selection (2011, No. 25 overall) of the San Diego Padres’ has struck out 8.03 batters per nine innings in his MLB career, which began June 6, 2015 with Washington, and rarely let the ball leave the yard (0.79 career home runs allowed per nine innings). With Triple-A Syracuse this season, Ross went 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA in two starts. The 22-year-old joins Washington on the heels of a strong 7.0-inning performance at Pawtucket (Red Sox) in which he allowed just one earned run off six hits. He did not walk a batter and he struck out six. Solis, 28, has appeared in six games for Washington this season (4.1 IP). The left-hander threw a scoreless eighth inning for the Nationals in Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. With a 3.11 ERA in 61 Major League games, Solis posted a career-best 2.41 ERA in 2016 while pitching in a career-high 37 games (41.1 IP) for the Nationals. Copyright © 2021 thebaynet.com. • How Baseball's Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers
How Baseball’s Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers Ivan Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pittsburgh Pirates under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage. By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs. It makes me more happy than getting 10 strikeouts.” Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pirates, who, under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, have reached the playoffs in three of the past four years.

  • Applying Matching Equation to Pitch Selection in Major League Baseball
APPLYING MATCHING EQUATION TO PITCH SELECTION IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL __________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Masters of Education in Applied Behavior Analysis __________________________________________________________________ David Dragone August 2018 Examining Committee Members: Donald Hantula, Ph.D., Thesis Advisor, Department of Psychology Matt Tincani, Ph. D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. KEYWORDS: general matching theory, general matching equation, sports, baseball, reinforcement ii DEDICATION This study is dedicated to the countless number of people who have supported me throughout the years both in this degree and professionally. Thank you, to my wife, Jen, and Children, Aurora and Rose, who gave me the motivation to keep working through this process and seeing it through to the end. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2017 NATIONAL TREASURE With a victory on Sunday at San Diego, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez improved to 12-5 on the season with a 2.39 ERA. The 31-year-old left-hander has won each of his last four starts, permitting just one earned run over 27.2 innings pitched (0.33 ERA). According to Elias, the only other pitchers in Expos/Nationals history to post an ERA below 0.50 over four straight starts within one season (all wins), are Charlie Lea (0.28 in 1981), Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (0.30 in 1997) and Javier Vazquez (0.28 in 2001). With his next start, Gio will attempt to become the fourth pitcher in Montreal/Washington franchise history to pick up a victory while tossing at least 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run or less in fi ve consecutive starts, and just the second to do so in a single season. Jordan Zimmermann accomplished the feat in six consecutive starts in 2012, while Martinez did so in six straight starts across the 1996-97 seasons. Gonzalez’ teammate Joe Ross compiled a streak of fi ve such starts between 2015-16. The two-time All-Star has now pitched into the sixth inning in 19 consecutive starts, and he has lasted at least 5.0 innings in 25 straight outings. Steve Rogers holds the all-time franchise mark of 62 straight starts of at least 5.0 innings pitched from May 22, 1977 - April 15, 1979.
