COLORADO ROCKIES Postgame Notes COLORADO ROCKIES Postgame Notes Washington Nationals (81-79) at Colorado Rockies (90-70) Friday, September 28, 2018 ∙ Coors Field 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E Washington 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 2 12 0 Colorado 0 0 1 0 3 1 0 0 x 5 8 0 W: Freeland (17-7) L: Ross (0-2) S: Davis (43) Rockies Notes The Colorado Rockies have clinched a postseason berth for the second consecutive season for the first time in franchise history … as of the end of the Rockies’ game this evening, have a magic number of two to clinch their first-ever National League West Division title … have won a season-high eight consecutive games, their longest winning streak since also winning eight-straight games, April 12-20, 2013. Ian Desmond and Chris Iannetta hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning, the fifth time that the Rockies have gone back- to-back this season (last: June 19, three consecutive home runs by Arenado, Story, Desmond). Kyle Freeland pitched six innings and allowed two runs on a career-high 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts … finishes the regular season with a 2.85 ERA (202.1 IP, 64 ER), the lowest full-season ERA for a starting pitcher in Rockies history … his 2.40 ERA (93.2 IP, 25 ER) at home is also the lowest for a starter in franchise history … he is the first Rockies pitcher to reach 200.0 innings pitched in a season since Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010 (221.2 IP) … made his 11th consecutive quality start, the third-longest quality start streak for a single season in franchise history … recorded his 17th win, tied for the second-most in franchise history and the most since Ubaldo Jimenez recorded a franchise-record 19 wins in 2010. David Dahl hit his 15th home run of the season, and has now recorded a home run in five consecutive games … he is the fourth player in Rockies history to record a home run streak of five or more games, joining Dante Bichette (Aug. 1-5, 1995), Larry Walker (June 18-23, 1999), and Nolan Arenado, who holds the franchise record with a six-game home run streak, Sept. 1-5, 2015. Ian Desmond went 1-for-3 with his second home run in three games … on the homestand, is batting .333 (5-for-15) with one double, two home runs and four RBI. Nationals Notes The Washington Nationals snapped a three-game winning streak at Coors Field in which they scored 11 or more runs (April 25- 27, 2017). Joe Ross made his third start of the season and allowed four runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts … allowed a career-high three home runs. Spencer Kieboom went 2-for-3 and has now recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Adrian Sanchez went 2-for-3 and has now recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games for the first time this season. MATH WORKSHEETS 4th Grade: Read and answer questions 1. If a starting pitcher throws about 90 pitches per game, and pitches in about 32 games per season, about how many pitches per year will the pitcher throw? How many pitches did our starting pitcher throw in the game today? If this is his average pitch count in 29 total games, how many will he throw? 2. Before 2019, Charlie Blackmon had played 920 games for the Rockies in 8 seasons. Todd Helton played 2247 games in 17 seasons, the most in Rockies history. If Charlie plays for the Rockies as long as Todd, how many games per season does he need to play to break Todd’s record? 3. In a recent game, Trevor Story got 2 hits in 4 at-bats and Ian Desmond got 1 hit in 2 at-bats. Write Story’s hits per at-bats and Desmond’s hits per at-bats as fractions and compare them using a <, =, or > sign. Draw a model of the fractions to justify your choice. 2020 MATH DAY MATH WORKSHEETS 4. If German Marquez pitches 2/3 of a 9-inning game and Scott Oberg pitches the rest, how many innings does Scott Oberg pitch? How would you write that as a fraction of a 9-inning game? Each team gets 27 outs in a 9-inning game. Can you see how many outs our starting pitcher got? 5. If Nolan Arenado gets 34 hits in his first 100 at-bats of the season, what would his batting average be? How many hits does Nolan have in the season so far? Can you show how to get his average? 2020 MATH DAY MATH WORKSHEETS 6.

  • Clips for 7-12-10
MEDIA CLIPS – Nov. 28, 2018 Desmond eyes more production in 2019 Thomas Harding | MLB.com | Nov. 27th, 2018 DENVER -- Ian Desmond spent the 2018 season hanging onto the number that mattered -- the one in the Rockies' win column. Many of the other numbers weren't kind to him. After a difficult and injury-filled 2017 season, which began his five-year contract worth $70 million, Desmond was healthy enough for 160 games in '18. But he batted .236 and wasn't treated kindly by the Wins Above Replacement stat -- minus- 0.7, per FanGraphs, and minus-0.6, per Baseball-Reference. As a comparison, Desmond averaged 2.2 and 2.1 WAR, respectively, over his seven full seasons before signing with Colorado. But with consistent production absent, Desmond at times fulfilled the Rockies' contention that he is a winning player. His 22 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 82 runs and 88 RBIs in 2018 are stats many players would love, and the Rockies will tell you he had a knack for the right, heady play during the team's second-half run. Hey, it all made him one of baseball's most interesting figures on Twitter; many games began with vitriolic reaction to him being in the lineup, and more than a handful ended with an apology after a late home run. Often fans familiar with his community involvement and interaction jumped to his defense. "The one thing I can say, I feel like no matter what the situation was, no matter what the numbers said, I feel like I came out and tried to do something to help the team win," Desmond said while clearing out of Coors Field after the Rockies were eliminated from the National League Division Series by the Brewers.

  • How Baseball's Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers
How Baseball’s Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers Ivan Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pittsburgh Pirates under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage. By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs. It makes me more happy than getting 10 strikeouts.” Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pirates, who, under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, have reached the playoffs in three of the past four years.
