Jacob Endris Poetry Praise for the Muses by Ben Randolph Praise for the waxing and waning of the melancholy music; The surfing and sinking of my mind with it; The beauty of sorrow and heartbreak, Expressed in song so eloquently and perfectly, So melodiously, So softly. Praise for the simple, folksy, happy music; The tapping of my toe, The snapping of my fingers, The clapping of my hands, The quick drum beat, The strumming of the guitar chords; The simple joy. Oh, you divine masters of my emotion! You muses, You throbbing hearts of the sublime life; Never cease your benevolent song! Delight in Humanity by Jared Allard The quiet, the stillness of morning after the rain, Magnificent dreams from the night before, a glance into the mind, Light-hearted sand blowing through the wind across a vast beach, The gaze of a full moon, myriad stars, Streams of water, metallic cool, snaking through spirit, preparing me for a new day, Intelligence from our forefather flowing from a fountain of knowledge, Sounds of life, reverberating in my ears, Comfort received from inspiration, Velvet clouds freeing the Sun from their silver lining, Soft memories remind of warm smiles past, The powerful heart pounds inside, continuing the spectacle of life with each beat-- Pricks of pain give us our humanity. Here at the Lake by Ben Koch A bell, the grill, an oak, and a snake, Against the shed lies a shoddy old rake, Under a sky so blue it must surely be fake, Harmony reigns, here at the lake. The chimes clash hard, a cold metallic sound, The tall trees sway but won’t submit to the ground, Lightning strikes but cannot be found, A storm at the lake, in the house we are bound. The heart of the fire, deep golden coals, Flames that have captivated countless souls, Stories are told of mountain trolls, At the lake by the fire, you need no goals. A bird on a branch, both a deep emerald green, A woodpecker knocks showing off his sheen, A snake slithers, harmless, but is scaly and mean, Tread softly at the lake, for their senses are keen. Perfect and balanced, everything in its place, Walking the woods to see a deer face-to-face, The peace of the lake makes a very strong case, To live at the lake, with tranquility and grace. Bad Rain by Rhett Wilson Dissension is depressing when it’s fallin’ from the clouds, You’re just so ostentatious, couldn’t help but use your style, Hip and comic thievery is rollin’ through our mind, Better learn to cut the slack before we’re stealin’ all their time, A bunch of sidewalk-salesmen, sellin’ when it’s hot, The heat is getting personal, too bad the cold is not. The early morning mobsters’ out lookin’ for a scare, But the banks are all empty; treat their customers with care, See the faces plastered on every TV screen, It’s a fiscal epidemic of the idol-worship scene. Don’t take me just for granted, take me on an eco-cruise, Float me down to my oblivion; make me a victim of your ruse, The rain is turnin’ green it seems we’ve lost our separate lives, Maybe you’ll get a paper-cut or maybe you’ll just die, But we keep on feedin’ leisure with whatever they say is right, An open-heart surgery full of seedy bloodlines. Paying your prescription for the latest names, Hopin’ someday you’ll get lucky with that fortune and pain, The rain is gettin’ heavy; you might fall into their moat, By the time you get that umbrella you’re gonna need a boat. Homage to Solitude by Sam Medley I’m welcomed to solitude by deep blue walls And distorted guitars over angry calls. Machine-gun drums echo to my ears; “Where’d you go?” he says, been gone for years. I crack open a book, the pages a pulpy grain, The decades-old words refreshing my brain: Poets in a civil war, an experience surreal. Orwell’s work floods
