1. Project Information

Project ID: NMHS/2017-18/MG26/10 Sanction Date: 28-02-18

Project Title: Assessment, Documentation and Validation of Sustainable Traditional Management Practices with Special Emphasis on Carbon Sequestration and Livelihood Improvement in Eastern Himalaya BTG:

PI and Affiliation Dr. Tuisem Shimrah (Institution): Assistant Professor, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Dwarka, Sector 16, New Delhi-110078 Name & Address Dr. Kiranmay Sarma of the Co-PI, if Assistant Professor, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Dwarka, Sector any: 16, New Delhi-110078

Structured Background: is one of the 29 states of which is an innate part of Abstract - North – East. The community is one of the major tribe detailing the occupying District, Manipur. covers a geographical area current year of 4,544 km2 of which 3,706 km2 are covered with forest which is 81.56% of the progress [Word total geographical area (India State of Forest Report, 2019). The Tangkhul Limit 250 farming community in Ukhrul district is very much dependent on the natural words]: resources for their food security and livelihood. Objectives/ Aim: To explore different traditional knowledge and characterize various traditional management practices in hill ecosystem; To assess carbon sequestration potentials of various traditionally managed land uses; To impart training and capacity building for traditional farming communities; To preserve and enhance traditional knowledge to contribute to sustainable local livelihoods and sustainable use of forest biodiversity. Methodology: Data were collected using both secondary and primary sources. Extensive field surveys were undertaken in the traditional villages. Approach: For calculating the biodiversity, quadrat systems were carried out. For finding out the SOC, Walkley and Black method were used. The training and workshops were mainly conducted for the farmers, SHGs and the youths of the villages. For the LULC of the study area, LANDSAT images were used and classified. Results: From the study area various types of garden crops, trees, shrubs, wild fruits and wild vegetables were identified and recorded. The area is blessed with rich variety of species, which is used by the local in various ways. The above ground biomass and below ground biomass, species diversity, important value index and Raunkiaer's Law of Frequency were also calculated for the study area. The SOC and SOM were also found to be very good. The interaction with the village people has been enlightening, their traditional method has been recorded throughout this research period, and inventory has been made for various species of the study area. Workshops and trainings were also carried out NMHS 2020 NMHS-Annual Progress Report (APR) Pro Forma Page 2 of 119

with the locl farmers, youths and SHGs. The LULC of Ukhrul and forest fragmentation of Senapati districts has been studied. The paper for has been published and for Ukhrul the manuscript is being readied for publication. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study showed that the local communities of the study area lets their lives revolve around the natural resources available to them for their food security and livelihood. They meet their needs through both forest derived and agricultural production. The area showed rich varieties for different species, home to various flora and fauna which can be well managed and conserved with proper plans by involving the people of the area. Recommendations: Although remote and still underdeveloped, the Tangkhuls lived with a strong social structure based on the principles of traditional and customary laws. If properly planned with due incentives to all sectors, viz. agriculture, forestry, NTFPs and livestock, through participatory approach by involving farmers, the rural susbsistence economy of the Tangkhul community could be converted to a substantially improved livelihood.
