1 Design Education in Asia 2000- 2010 Exploring the impact of institutional ‘twinning’ on graphic design education in Singapore Simon Richards Z3437992 2 3 Although Singapore recently celebrated 50 years of graphic design, relatively little documentation exists about the history of graphic design in the island state. This research explores Singaporean design education institutes that adopted ‘twinning’ strategies with international design schools over the last 20 years and compares them with institutions that have retained a more individual and local profile. Seeking to explore this little-studied field, the research contributes to an emergent conversation about Singapore’s design history and how it has influenced the current state of the design industry in Singapore. The research documents and describes the growth resulting from a decade of investment in the creative fields in Singapore. It also establishes a pattern articulated via interviews and applied research involving local designers and design educators who were invited to take part in the research. The content of the interviews demonstrates strong views that reflect the growing importance of creativity and design in the local society. In considering the deliberate practice of Singaporean graphic design schools adopting twinning strategies with western universities, the research posits questions about whether Singapore is now able to confirm that such relationships have been beneficial as viable long-term strategies for the future of the local design industry. If so, the ramifications may have a significant impact not only in Singapore but also in major new education markets throughout Asia, such as the well-supported creative sectors within China and India. -

Simelearn – Centre of Excellent Simulation and Elearning
Centre of Excellent Simulation and eLearning (SIMeLEARN) Importance Healthcare is in constant transition. As new technologies, medical diagnoses, and treatments surge ahead and multiply, so do patients knowledge of their medical history and healthcare developments. Today’s healthcare professionals need expertise about more than just diagnostics and treatment. Social skills to interact with diverse patient groups and their next of kin as well as healthcare professionals’ motivation to commit to life-long learning and teaching are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, healthcare education is moving from the conventional settings of lecture halls to very diverse learning locations and training methods, e.g. using e-learning programmes at home or in simulation centres. By including development and implementation of new and innovative forms of teaching and learning, SIMeLEARN will establish a culture for lifelong learning amongst both students and staff at the University of Stavanger (UiS). Students, teaching staff and healthcare professionals will all significantly expand their experience and increase their competence in the use of simulation and e-learning tools in higher education and clinical practice. SIMeLEARN will thereby provide a robust educational ecosystem for a new generation of healthcare professionals prepared and motivated to tackle the future challenges of a healthcare system in constant transition. Despite patient safety being high on the political agenda in Norway, the adverse event rate has remained at 13-16% for hospitalized patients for the last years 1. Early involvement of teaching staff, and delivery of multiprofessional simulation and e-learning will help us avoid certain pitfalls in the way of safe and effective care for patients, their next of kin, and for the healthcare workforce itself. -

My main research projects in this direction are on "Imperfect enforcement of financial contracts" (with Tore Ellingsen) and "Licensing and Innovation with Imperfect Enforcement" (with Richard Gilbert). Soon we have a first draft ready on "Institutional Change and International Reallocation" (with Tore Ellingsen). I plan to do a lot more. I also do research on labour markets and focus on turnover and wage policies for workers. In the paper "Management of Knowledge Workers" (with Hans Hvide) we discussed how firms’ intellectual Eirik Gaard Kristiansen 2 property rights and litigation of departing workers interacted with firms’ wage policies and workers effort to create new business opportunities for firms. -

The Story LOGLINE A little girl escapes deportation by becoming a mermaid SHORT SYNOPSIS After an immigration raid in their apartment building, a group of boys help an undocumented girl get to the beach to reunite with her family, unaware of that their new friend has a magical secret that will change their lives forever. LONG SYNOPSIS Día de las Carpas is a fantasy-adventure film told from the point of view of JONATHAN, a young boy who starts the day just wanting to go to see a giant carp that’s been caught at the pier. But after witnessing an immigration raid, Jonathan and his friends find their undocumented neighbor ESME hiding and decide to help her evade ICE agents to get to the beach where she’ll reunite with her family. However, Jonathan puts his fishing mentor, BIG SERG, who has promised to take the boys to the beach, in danger since Serg used to run the streets and doesn’t want to get in trouble with authorities again. They all race towards the pier where Esme hides again, but this time inside the giant carp itself, which magically comes alive and jumps into the ocean. In a final miracle, Esme transforms into a mermaid and meets the rest of her mermaid family who have been waiting for her. By going on this journey, Jonathan also transforms himself from a hesitant boy into a young man willing to take a stand.
