CATALOGUE OF THE GRASSES OF CUBA By A. S. Hitchcock. INTRODUCTION. The following list of Cuban grasses is based primarily upon the collections at the Estaci6n Central Agron6mica de Cuba, situated at Santiago de las Vegas, a suburb of Habana. The herbarium includes the collections made by the members of the staff, particularly Mr. C. F. Baker, formerly head of the department of botany, and also the Sauvalle Herbarium deposited by the Habana Academy of Sciences, These specimens were examined by the writer during a short stay upon the island in the spring of 1906, and were later kindly loaned by the station authorities for a more critical study at Washington. The Sauvalle Herbarium contains a fairly complete set of the grasses col- lected by Charles Wright, the most important collection thus far obtained from Cuba. In addition to the collections at the Cuba Experiment Station, the National Herbarium furnished important material for study, including collections made by A. H. Curtiss, W. Palmer and J. H. Riley, A. Taylor (from the Isle of Pines), S. M. Tracy, Brother Leon (De la Salle College, Habana), and the writer. The earlier collections of Wright were sent to Grisebach for study. These were reported upon by Grisebach in his work entitled "Cata- logus Plant arum Cubensium," published in 1866, though preliminary reports appeared earlier in the two parts of Plantae Wrightianae. * During the spring of 1907 I had the opportunity of examining the grasses in the herbarium of Grisebach in Gottingen.6 In the present article I have, with few exceptions, accounted for the grasses listed by Grisebach in his catalogue of Cuban plants, and have appended a list of these with references to the pages in the body of this article upon which the species are considered. -

Panicum scabridum and species of Coleataenia are cespitose and perennial plants, with a lower glume (1–)3–5-nerved, 1/3 to 3/4 of the spikelet, upper glume and lower lemma 5–9-nerved, and upper anthecium smooth, shiny, and indurate. Within Coleataenia, P. scabridum appeared as the sister taxon of the species pair C. prionitis and C. petersonii; these three species are the only NADP-me taxa of tribe Paspaleae exhibiting two bundle sheaths around the vascular bundles, i.e., with an outer parenchymatous sheath and an inner mestome sheath with specialized chloroplasts. The new combination Coleataenia scabrida is proposed and a lectotype is designated. Hitchcock, Systematic Agros- tologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, and Agnes Chase, Assistant Agi'ostologist, brings together in a single convenient publication our knowledge of the grass flora of the West Indian Islands. Though some of the earliest collections of plants sent from America to Europe came from the West Indies, and though the flora of this region has since been studied by many botanists, no account of the grasses of the whole region has hitherto been published. The present paper is based upon large collections from practically all the islands of the group and upon field studies by both authors. It includes 110 genera and 455 species, of which one genus and 17 species are new. The new genus, Saugetia, is named in honor of Brother Leon, Joseph Sylvestre Sauget, of the Colegio de La Salle, Habana, on^ of the most active of Cuban botanists. The brief descriptions, giving the salient characteristics of the species and genera, are intended to supplement the keys and confirm identifications. -
Phylogenetics of Paniceae (Poaceae)1

MINN2 2Department of Biological Sciences, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois 60115-2861 USA; and 3Department of Botany, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011-1020 USA Paniceae demonstrate unique variability of photosynthetic physiology and anatomy, including both non-Kranz and Kranz species and all subtypes of the latter. This variability suggests hypotheses of independent origin or reversals (e.g., from C4 to C3). These hypotheses can be tested by phylogenetic analysis of independent molecular characters. The molecular phylogeny of 57 species of Paniceae was explored using sequences from the grass-speci®c insert found in the plastid locus rpoC2. Phylogenetic analyses con®rmed some long-recognized alliances in Paniceae, some recent molecular phylogenetic results, and suggested new relationships. Broadly, Paniceae were found to be paraphyletic with Andropogoneae, Panicum was found to be polyphyletic, and Oplismenus hirtellus was resolved as the sister group to the remaining ingroup species. A particularly well-supported clade in the rpoC2 tree included four genera with non-Kranz species and three with distinctively keeled paleas. As previously suggested, the PCK (phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase) C4 subtype arose once within Paniceae. All clades with non-Kranz species had Kranz ancestors or sister taxa suggesting repeated loss of the Kranz syndrome. Montiel* (Recibido para su publicación el 28 de mayo de 1971) ABSTRACT In the c1assification of Chaetillm bromoides (Presl) Benth., the species agrees ia most morphological and anatomical characters with the subfamily Panicoideae, tribe Paniceae, subtribe Panicinae. A small number of anatomical details point to connection with the Chloridoideae-Eragrostoideae 01' with the Festucoideae and Bambusoideae, while the chromosome :lUmber of n=13 provides a link with the genus NardllJ, itself hard to place within the accepted subdivisions of the family. El presente estudio es una pequeña contribución al conocimiento y de terminación taxonómica, desde el punto de vista anatómico y morfológico, de Chaetium bromoides (Presl) Benth., conocido en Costa Rica como setilla, especie herbácea distribuída en las zonas templadas de Costa Rica, el resto de Centro América y México. No existía anteriormente ningún trabajo sobre la anatomía de esta planta, razón por la cual se estudiará con base en los métodos modernos de anatomía y taxonomía en gramíneas, los cuales dan una visión amplia para poder determinar la posición taxonómica de la especie. La mayoría de los estudios efectuados con gramíneas han sido hechos con plantas de climas templados y algunas especies existentes tanto en éstos como en los trópicos ( en especial los africanos). En la actualidad, gracias a los estudios de caracteres no morfológicos, ta les como (a) anatomía del embrión y de la planta joven; (b) anatomía de la ho ja, culmo y raíz; (c) histología de epidermis y tejidos internos, ápices y zona pilífera; (d) citología de cromosomas, nucléolos, cloroplastos, gránulos de almi.
