  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 78. Hey
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 78. Hey, guess what? We just passed the midway point of the novel, and guess what? We still don’t have three kingdoms in this Romance of the THREE Kingdoms. But stay with me, because we’re about to take a big step toward that this week. So last time, we left Liu Bei in a bit of a dicey situation. His plot with Zhang Song to take over the Riverlands leaked out, and Zhang Song lost his head because of it. Not only that, Liu Zhang was at long last on to his dear kinsman’s true intentions and ordered his men to strengthen defenses at all the key points. While this was going on, Liu Bei was putting into action his own plan, which called for pretending that he was leaving the Riverlands. His first stop was going to be Fucheng (2,2), and he sent word on ahead to the two generals defending Fu (2) River Pass that he would like to bid them goodbye before he left. The two officers, Yang (2) Huai (2) and Gao (1) Pei (4), had long been suspicious of Liu Bei, and they decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to assassinate him. So they each stashed a dagger under their clothes and took 200 men with them to go see Liu Bei. Meanwhile, as Liu Bei was approaching the Fu (2) River, his military strategist Pang Tong advised him, “If Yang Huai and Gao Pei come to meet us without hesitation, we must be on guard.

Raiding the Garden and Rejecting the Family A Narratology of Scene in The Dream of the Red Chamber Zhonghong Chen Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages UNIVERSITETET I OSLO Autumn 2014 II Raiding the Garden and Rejecting the Family: A Narratology of Scene in the Dream of Red Chamber A Master Thesis III © Zhonghong Chen 2014 Raiding the Garden and Rejecting the Family: A Narratology of Scene in the Dream of Red Chamber Zhonghong Chen http://www.duo.uio.no/ Printed by Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo IV Summary By conducting a close reading and a structural analysis, this thesis explores a narratology of “scene” in the novel Dream of the Red Chamber(Honglou meng《红楼梦》). The terminology of “scene” in the Western literary criticism usually refers to “a structual unit in drama” and “a mode of presentation in narrative”. Some literature criticists also claim that “scene” refers to “a structural unit in narrative”, though without further explanation. One of the main contributions of this theis is to define the term of “scene”, apply it stringently to the novel, Honglou meng, and thus make a narratology of “scene” in this novel. This thesis finds that “scene” as a structural unit in drama is characterized by a unity of continuity of characters, time, space and actions that are unified based on the same topic. “Topic” plays a decisive role in distinguishing “scenes”. On the basis of the definition of the term of “scene”, this theis also reveals how “scenes” transfer from each other by analyzing “scene transitions”. This thesis also finds that the characteristic of the narration in Honglou meng is “character-centered” ranther than “plot-centered”, by conducting research on the relationship between “scene”, “chapter” and “chapter title”.

  • XUN XU's FIRST POSTS, CA. 248–265 We Know Next to Nothing
CHAPTER TWO XUN XU’S FIRST POSTS, CA. 248–265 Shang 商: The Harmonious Step Moving away from gong is made comfortable by the harmonious and harmonic shang note. In modes and melodies, shang forms unoffending chords; it cooperates with other notes, like zhi and yu. Harmonics masters knew that the circle-of-fifths derivation, based on gong as “9,” resulted in the pleasing whole number “8” for shang. Xun Xu began his career under the Jin by fitting in with the new regime and cooperat- ing in court projects. We know next to nothing about Xun Xu’s childhood and youth. But from the previous chapter we do know that his family was used to power—power that had first been local, then on the move defensively, next serving Cao Cao’s court at Xu, and finally the Simas in Luoyang. The Xuns offered important political service to the Cao-Wei dynasty, even if the fate of Xun Yu at the hands of Cao Cao had weakened Xun loyalties to that family. Cao Cao’s heirs began to rebuild Luoyang pal- aces and state offices in the 220s, so by the mid-230s such Xun men as Xun Can and Xun Yi began residing there, and the young orphan Xun Xu relied on them, as well as on in-laws, for political grooming and entree. His biography states: Xun Xu was styled Gongceng 公曾. He was a Yingchuan 穎川, Yingyin 穎陰, man, and the great-grandson of Xun Shuang 爽, an [Eastern Han- dynasty] Minister of Works. His grandfather was Xun Fei 棐, who was a Colonel of Archers Who Shoot by Sound.

PHYS. LETT. Vol. 31, No. 7 (2014) 074210 Novel Dynamics of a Vortex in Three-Dimensional Dissipative Media with an Umbrella-Shaped Potential * LIU Yun-Feng(4云Â), LIU Bin(4Q)**, HE Xing-Dao(何,道), LI Shu-Jing(o淑·) Key Laboratory of Nondestructive Test (Ministry of Education), Nanchang Hangkong University, Nanchang 330063 (Received 21 March 2014) We report the novel dynamic of 3D dissipative vortices supported by an umbrella-shaped potential (USP) in the 3D complex Ginzburg–Landau (CGL) equation with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The stable solution of vortices with intrinsic vorticity S=1 and 2 are obtained in the 3D CGL equation. An appropriate USP forces the vortices continuously to throw out fundamental 3D solitons (light bullets) along the folding umbrella. The dynamic regions of the strength of the potential with the changing number of folding umbrella are analyzed, and the rate of throwing increases with the strength of the potential. A weak potential cannot provide vortices with enough force. Then, the vortices will be stretched into polygons. However, a strong potential will destroy the vortices. PACS: 42.65.Tg, 05.45.−a DOI: 10.1088/0256-307X/31/7/074210 Solitons in optical media have attracted much In this Letter, we introduce a 3D CGL model with attention.[1−14] A spatiotemporal soliton is referred to an external umbrella-shaped potential.
