Work By David Work Many Many Thanks to everyone who was able to Howdy Folks! It’s that time again! See the Calendar on page 8 for more details By midafternoon, when the meeting was supposed to take place, there weren’t enough folks there INSIDE THIS ISSUE really to have a meeting, so we just kept cooking, deciding to have the meeting after dinner. 1 Winter Mushrooms Sessions Dinner was delicious and varied. So the meeting just petered out. Sorry about that! I had a great time, though and I think everyone who came was glad they did! Woops! As I rushed to press on the last newsletter, I made a stupid mistake. I cut and pasted the membership form from a much older newsletter, totally forgetting that we changed the membership dues last Spring. Most field guides will list only a dozen or so Amanita species, very often the same dozen: The Destroying Angels (virosa/bisporigera ), The Fly Agaric ( muscaria and var formosa ), Caesar’s Mushroom (cesaria/hemibapha/jacksonii ). The Blusher ( rubescens ), The Grisette ( vaginata ), The Death Cap (actually Death Cup) phalloides – even though it is extremely rare, and perhaps brunescens, citrina, cecilia and an odd lepidella or two. These are easily recognized forms and authors would be remiss to not mention them. By the same token, however, it would be a mistake for mushroom collectors to be unaware of the rich diversity of Amanita that actually exists. What I hope to do here is to provide a way of making preliminary distinctions of most of the Amanita we are likely to encounter in the Northeast based upon a few macroscopic characteristics observed at the base of the stipe. The species are valuable in medicine and nutritious for human health. However, there are some species belonging to this genus are toxic, especially the species belonging to Amanita Dill. Ex Boehm. The investigation of the species was carried out in Chu Yang Sin national park. The results showed that 15 species of Amanita Dill. Ex Boehm were recorded: (1) Amanita abrupta; (2) Amanita amanitoides; (3) Amanita caesareoides; (4) Amanita caesarea; (5) Amanita cokeri ; (6) Amanita concentrica; (7) Amanita flavoconia; (8) Amanita levistriata; (9) Amanita multisquamosa; (10) Amanita pantherina; (11) Amanita phalloides; (12) Amanita pilosella, (13) Amanita solitaria; (14) Amanita subcokeri; (15) Amanit vaginata .Within 15 species were identified, eight species were newly added to the list of predominant fungi in the Central Highlands of Vietnam included: Amanita abrupta, Amanita amanitoides, Amanita concentrica, Amanita flavoconia, Amanita levistriata, Amanita multisquamosa, Amanita pilosella, Amanita solitaria. Most of the collected Amanita species showed bright colors with a base or fungal rings. They live in areas with high moisture (>85%), at altitude from 800 – 1200 m above sea level, annually occur from June to November and are saprotrophic on soil, under tree shades, especially coniferous, semi-evergreen trees and on greensward or shrubs.
