Week Beginning 9Th November In and On - • In the back of your book write down one reason people believe in immortality. • How many challenges can you come up with against it? Inference grid • On the next slide you will be shown a famous painting by the Italian artist Michelangelo. The painting is called ‘The Last Judgement.’ • Examine the picture carefully, discuss the questions from your inference squares and complete Infer = them to reflect on your ideas. educated guesses/ concluding something from a source. This is a zoomed in look at Jesus in the top centre of the painting. The figure dominates the painting and Michelangelo is probably trying to capture the moment when the verdict of the Last Judgement is made. His calm gesture seems to both command attention yet reassure those around him. Next to Christ is the Virgin, who turns her head as if to say she can no longer intervene in the decision. The Saints and the Elect, arranged around Jesus the judge Christ and the Virgin, also anxiously await the verdict. Bartholomew with his own skin (he was martyred by being skinned alive). Some art commentators regard the face on the skin as a self- portrait of Michelangelo himself. Saints The angels of the Apocalypse awaken the dead to the sound of long trumpets. On the left the risen recover their bodies as they ascend towards heaven (Resurrection of the body), on the right angels and devils fight over the damned as they fall down towards Trumpeters hell. Notice the artist has used very dark and fiery colours to depict the place of the damned. Mouth of Hell Charon’s boat This image of Charon's boat on the river Styx should inspire fear and horror as the damned are driven off the boat into hell. Charon is a demon character from Greek mythology but has been used in this Christian painting. For some critics, this is one of the most powerful images of the painting. This man has just realized his fate. Could it be that he had fooled himself for years about how he was living? Notice the dread and despair. Notice to the demon that has him. The colour may imply that the demon is really evil (dark, almost an olive Doomed colour, like dead flesh). Linear views of immortality Linear view- the belief that our existence on earth has a Write beginning and an end. We have this down one chance at life on earth. Linear views from different religions • On a page in your exercise book- create your own ‘painting’ (drawing) showing linear views of immortality for each religion. Then explain your drawing in your own words in your book before gluing it in. • Try to include all the beliefs from that religion found on the following slides. Linear views from Christianity Resurrection and judgement Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead three days after he died. They call this the resurrection. They hope that if they follow Jesus and his teachings, then they will be resurrected too. Christians believe that God is fair, and that he will judge everyone in a fair way after death. Heaven, hell and purgatory Many Christians believe that those who have been good in their life on earth will go to heaven. Some believe that heaven is a physical place, where their body goes after death. Others believe that it is their soul that lives on, and that heaven is a state of being with God. Many Christians also believe that sinners (bad people) will go to hell, a place of suffering. Some Christians, including Roman Catholics, believe in purgatory. This is an in-between state for most people. This is where the soul waits and is cleansed from sin. Linear views from Islam The role of God in immortality • Islam teaches that Allah (God) has full control over all that happens. Nothing can happen unless permitted by Allah. • Allah has also given humans free will, however. People are able to choose between right and wrong, and are responsible for their actions. Our lives on earth are a preparation for the eternal life to come (Akhirah). The day of resurrection • Muslims believe that on a day decided by Allah, life on earth will come to an end and Allah will destroy everything. On this day all the people who have ever lived will be raised from the dead and will face judgement. Muslims believe that they will remain in their graves until this day. • On this day, Allah will balance the good deeds a person has done in their life against the bad deeds: - If the good deeds outweigh the bad, the person will go to paradise (Jannah), a place of joy and bliss. - If the bad things outweigh the good, then the person will be punished in hell (Jahannam). When Allah is making a judgement, even a person’s intentions (niyyah) are taken into account. Linear views from Judaism • Jews do not have any clear teaching about the relationship between the body and soul. It is not considered to be important. • Some rabbis teach that the soul leaves the body while a person is asleep and visits heaven. On the Sabbath, G-d gives everyone an extra soul. • In ancient times, when the Jewish scriptures were written, people believed that after death everyone went to Sheol, described as a dark place where people went after death and stayed for eternity. Many Jews believed that Adam and Eve would have lived forever in the Garden of Eden but, because they disobeyed G-d, they became mortal. • Another view is that good people will enter Gan Eden (paradise) and wicked people will go to Gehenna after the last judgment. (Gehenna is different from Sheol: Sheol is a place of waiting while Gehenna is hell.) • When people are judged by G-d their body and soul are reunited. Judgement will take place after the coming of the Messiah. • Jews believe that the importance of life is the way in which it is lived on earth. Whatever happens after death is in G-d’s hands. Extension task - comparing linear views • Use all of the information, create a venn diagram in your book. Īmān, Islām, taqwā, kufr, shirk, and nifāq are, the six significant terms, used in the Noble Qur‟an frequently. All of them represent the characteristics of human beings. The possessors of these characters will go to their eternal destination; the Jannah or Jahannam. The Jannah is the aftermath of īmān, Islam and taqwā. In effect, non-Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus.     Experiencing Jahannam Hell – the punishment of Allah – has been mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah many times. It is the eternal abode of those who commit shirk with Allah, and the temporary abode of the sinning Muslims whom Allah chose to purify through the fire of Hell. We all read about it from time to time, but how often do we say to ourselves: “What if I was in Jahannam?” Let's take a look at what experiencing jahannam would be like, may Allah protect us from ever experiencing it. is jeem haa meem, and its meaning is to frown, glower, scowl, to (جهنم) The root word for Jahannam regard with displeasure. The word Jahm (from the same root) means sullen, glum, morose, gloomy.1 From these meanings, we can see that Jahannam is an extremely depressing place, full of darkness. It just doesn't burn and torture, it frowns at its inhabitants while doing so! Entry into Jahannam We are told about the entry of the disbelievers into Jahannam in Surah Zumar: And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups, till, when they reach it, the gates thereof will be opened (suddenly like a prison at the arrival of the prisoners). And its keepers will say, "Did not the Messengers come to you from yourselves, reciting to you the Verses of your Lord, and warning you of the Meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say: "Yes, but the Word of torment has been justified against the disbelievers! It will be said (to them): "Enter you the gates of Hell, to abide therein.

With respect to the dead in the grave he is going to be questioned and the answer will determine whether his grave will be a window to Jannah (Paradise) ?or a window to Jahannam (Hell).

    CHAPTER � Introducing Hell in Islamic Studies Christian Lange In regard to the afterlife, scholars of Islam in the West have demonstrated a remarkably irenic temper, preferring to give far more attention to paradise than to hell. The Islamic hell, for the most part, has been viewed as no more than the mirror image of paradise, an ugly reflection of the beauties and the joys in heaven. Consequently, it has been considered a phenomenon of secondary logical and ontological order, as well as interest.
