LASALLE PROGRAMME GUIDE • POSTGRADUATE MASTER OF ARTS FINE ARTS 39 NEW ART HISTORY PROGRAMME, 2010 INTAKE

Master of Arts Art History* The programme will be the first of its kind to focus entirely on modern as well as contemporary Asian art. With the rise of Asia as an economic powerhouse in the past decade and the current dominance of Asian art in the contemporary art market, this programme will offer potential candidates the opportunity to study and contribute to a rapidly growing and important subject area. The MA Art History is a three-semester or forty-two weeks programme that will be taught by experts in the field, both local and international. Taking as its starting point the mid 1850s, the programme will examine emergence of modernism in Asian art, the impact of colonialism and nationalism as well as the role of society and politics in Asian art. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art, this programme will also have a seminar module where a range of topics and disciplines spanning architecture, photography, design, curation and art collecting will be discussed. In the final semester, students are required to write a dissertation on a chosen topic within the context of modern and contemporary Asian art.
