FACTSHEET NIGHT FESTIVAL 2012 Back for its fifth instalment since 2008, Night Festival 2012 returns with a bang promising a nocturnal extravaganza of spectacular aerial performances, music, and dance and artworks. Held over two weekends on 24th & 25th August and 31st August & 1st September, Night Festival 2012 showcases the buzz and vibrancy in the Bras Basah.Bugis Arts and Heritage Precinct. The entire area will be transformed into a carnival ground with main events taking place on the public green spaces of SMU, National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, The Peranakan Museum, The Substation, and more. Night Festival 2012 is bigger than ever as the entire Bras Basah.Bugis community comes together to make the festival a success. Stretching from Cathay building to Armenian Street, this year sees a record number of partners in the area actively involved in the Festival itself, such as The Cathay, Timbre, Switch, Vanguard Building, CHIJMES, LOOF, Select Books and SOTA. Providing a platform for the best of our local talents to perform and collaborate with foreign acts, Night Festival promises a lively exchange of skills, culture and talent for the performers as well as the audience. With the rich line-up of programmes, Singaporeans will be able to come together to celebrate and create new shared memories through meaningful and engaging experiences at the festival this year. As part of Night Festival, the National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, and The Peranakan Museum will also be open till 2.00am. THE PLACES WE LIVE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY FROM ROCHOR TO BRAS BASAH Fri 24 Aug – Mon 3 Sep І 10am National Museum of Singapore, Salon Foyer This exhibition specifically celebrates the perennial richness of the Bras Basah.Bugis Precinct, the bustle and charm of life within as well as the architectural heritage of the 95-ha precinct. Featuring works by SOTA students using Olympus cameras and showcasing a plethora of young perspectives – as a definition, record and enduring experience of place and culture. ONE FINE DAY BY PAPER MONKEY THEATRE (SINGAPORE) Fri 24 & Sat 25 Aug І 8pm, 9pm, 9.30pm, 10pm І Duration: 10mins per show National Museum of Singapore, Glass Atrium It is 6am in the morning. What is the old man living downstairs busy with? What would the lady living on the 12th storey be doing? Is the family living opposite unit still asleep? What is that wonderful aroma coming from the fourth floor? Join us as we take a peek into the homes of these families living in the same HDB block. With the play of lights and shadow, this 10-minute shadow puppetry performance by Paper Monkey Theatre will delight the young and old. Learn to make a simple shadow puppet and use it to create shadows in front of any light sources around the spaces in the museum. Circus Swingapore is Singapore‟s only School of Circus Arts with students ranging from 7 to 50 years old! Tarian Hati | 9pm A contemporary dance blending traditional dance drama, folk mask dance incorporated with a 100 year old gurindam (poetic verses by Raja Ali Haji). Bhangra Dance | 9.30pm Feel the beat as four Bhangara dancers and four drummers beat up a storm amongst the audience and dance their way right onto the stage where they will put up exciting Bhangara moves and stunts! LED Dragon Dance and shuffling LED Lion Dance | 9.45pm Tradition crosses path with the 21st century! A creative mix of unique dragon dance performance followed by high energy shuffling lions grooving to current dance moves. The Tabla Man and The Umbrella Man | 10pm Showcasing Singapore's own artists in a unique show. The awarded master of rhythms M S Maniam, The Tabla Man meets Nick, The Umbrella Man, in a unique performance combining different cultures and skills. This is Singapore's own. Eye-catching, quirky and befuddling, these policemen will mingle with you and amuse you by juxtaposing strange personalities with everyday normal situations. FLASH TALES IN A NIGHT BY SINGAPORE FOOTPRINTS (SINGAPORE) Fri 24 & Sat 25 Aug Fri 31 Aug & Sat 1 Sep І 8.30pm – 11pm Singapore Management University Lee Kong Chian School of Business, along Stamford Road and Roving A story‐teller busks on the streets, just like the good old days of entertainment before the television sets! Let his animated speech and variety of expressions captivate you all night, keep you wanting for more! Do bear in mind that each story lasts only as long as the joss stick burns… History comes alive with extravagantly dressed characters, who look like they walked right out of history books! Take photos with them and listen in on their animated conversations of stories told during the olden days in the Bras Basah district.
