ARAHMAIANI Born in Bandung, Indonesia, 1961 One of Indonesia’s most seminal and respected contemporary artists, Arahmaiani has long been internationally recognized for her powerful and provocative commentaries on social, political, and cultural issues. Born in 1961 in Bandung, Indonesia, she established herself in the 1980s as a pioneer in the field of performance art in Southeast Asia, although her practice also incorporates a wide variety of media. For the past six years, a particular focus of her work has been environmental issues in the Tibetan plateau region, where she has been actively collaborating on‐site with Buddhist monks and villagers to foster greater environmental consciousness through an array of ongoing community projects. Shadow of the Past (2016) at Tyler Rollins Fine Art marked the first solo exhibition devoted to her artworks inspired by her ongoing experiences in Tibet, and featured a new installation and video works alongside a series of paintings. The exhibition explored themes of spirituality (particularly informed by Tibetan Buddhism), cultural syncretism, humanity’s interconnectedness with nature, and the place of the feminine in religious traditions and in spiritual life in general. Arahmaiani is fascinated by the buried past of her native Java, its rich Hindu‐Buddhist cultural heritage – which is now often under‐recognized – and the monumental temples that were overgrown for centuries until their rediscovery in more recent times. Indonesia once had vital centers of Buddhist learning that were sought out by students from across Asia, including Atisha (982–1054), who became one of Tibet’s most revered lamas. Tibet has become an important part of Arahmaini’s own spiritual journey, both as a woman and a Javanese Muslim. -

2 ASIAN VISUAL CULTURES Dirgantoro Feminisms and Contemporary Art in Indonesia Wulan Dirgantoro Feminisms and Contemporary Art in Indonesia Defining Experiences Feminisms and Contemporary Art in Indonesia Asian Visual Cultures This series focuses on visual cultures that are produced, distributed and consumed in Asia and by Asian communities worldwide. Visual cultures have been implicated in creative policies of the state and in global cultural networks (such as the art world, film festivals and the Internet), particularly since the emergence of digital technologies. Asia is home to some of the major film, television and video industries in the world, while Asian contemporary artists are selling their works for record prices at the international art markets. Visual communication and innovation is also thriving in transnational networks and communities at the grass-roots level. Asian Visual Cultures seeks to explore how the texts and contexts of Asian visual cultures shape, express and negotiate new forms of creativity, subjectivity and cultural politics. It specifically aims to probe into the political, commercial and digital contexts in which visual cultures emerge and circulate, and to trace the potential of these cultures for political or social critique. EMBARGOED TILL MON, 21 MAY 2018 Finalists for the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize 2018 revealed The exhibition of finalist artworks for the 4th edition of the juried contemporary art award to open on 25 May 21 MAY 2017, Singapore – The Singapore Art Museum and Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation announced the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize 2018 finalist artworks today, which will be on view at an exhibition held from 25 May to 2 September 2018 at the National Museum of Singapore, the venue supporter for the Prize’s finalist exhibition. The triennial APB Foundation Signature Art Prize spotlights outstanding examples of contemporary art from emerging and established artists produced over the last three years, and for this fourth edition, has expanded in scope to include Central Asia in addition to the Asia Pacific region. The Prize is worth SGD 100,000, with SGD 60,000 awarded to the Grand Prize winner and SGD 15,000 each for two Jurors’ Choice Award winners. A People’s Choice Award of SGD 10,000 will also be offered to the artwork that receives the highest number of public votes on-site at the exhibition. The winners of APB Foundation Signature Art Prize 2018 will be announced after an awards ceremony on 29 June 2018. FINE ART ARAHMAIANI FERTILITY OF THE MIND The Flower, 1982, performance. Memory of Nature, 2013, performance. Arahmaiani is one of Indonesia’s most respected and iconic contemporary artists, and her work is internationally recognized for its powerful and provocative commentaries on social and cultural issues. In the 1980s and '90s, she established herself as a pioneer in the field of performance art in Southeast Asia, although her practice also incorporates a wide variety of media, including video, installation, painting, drawing, and sculpture. Since her first exhibition in 1980, her work has been included in over one hundred solo and group exhibitions around the world. Tyler Rollins Fine Art is pleased to present Arahmaiani’s first solo exhibition in the United States, taking place at our New York gallery from January 9 – February 22, 2014. The exhibition features the first survey of the artist’s 30 years of performance work, curated with Leeza Ahmady, independent curator and director of Asian Contemporary Art Week, New York. Also included are key installations from the 1990s, selected paintings, and her seminal 2004 video, I Don’t Want to Be Part of Your Legend. The exhibition maps the evolving meditations of an artist whose prolific life of activism and artistic practice has been steadfast in its relentless probing of social and political issues. Her works in essence foreground a long and enduring personal and spiritual journey, a process whereby nothing is spared, all is equally scrutinized. They constitute an ongoing exposé of mechanistic thought, beliefs, actions, and policies that plague humanity, manifested in her peaceful, beautiful, and symbolic protests, marches, ceremonies, and texts that instigate individual and collective vigilance against ignorance, injustice, and mental manipulation by agencies of power worldwide. -

Each individual form is painstakingly slipcast from a handcrafted plaster mould in one of five architectural shapes. Despite the humble nature of their material, the structures are elegantly proportioned and restrained in their simplicity. Arranged in a regular repeating pattern, their precise silhouettes create a variegated ‘skyline’ with rhythms of form and space. The configuration references the Diamond World or Kongokai mandala, a fundamental tool in Japanese esoteric Buddhist practice, which functions as an aid to meditation and a portal or medium for spiritual awareness and understanding. -

Gendering the Environmental Artivism: Ekofeminisme and Unjuk Rasa of Arahmaiani’s Art EDWIN JURRIËNS Abstract This article focuses on Indonesian contemporary art with an activist agenda, meant to create awareness about environmental issues and mobilise a critical or problem-solving response. I examine the work of Arahmaiani, which stands out for providing a gendered perspective on the socio-political dimensions of envi- ronmental problems and solutions. In examining Arahmaiani’s oeuvre, I use the concepts of unjuk rasa and ekofeminisme, which are derived from Indonesian academic and artistic debates around environmental art and activism. This approach extends the interconnections between creativity, gender and environ- mental activism beyond the field of contemporary art to include traditional and popular media and platforms of creativity. I argue that Arahmaiani’s personalised nomadism has facilitated reconnections with Indonesia’s past, alternative inter- pretations of the homeland and the nation-state, and visions of more just and inclusive forms of community. UBUNTU An evening in aid of Tana River Life Foundation Dear Friends, Thank you for your presence this evening at “Ubuntu: An Evening in aid of Tana River Life Foundation”. Ubuntu is an African Philosophy about humanity which Archbishop Desmond Tutu explained in this way: “Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you cannot exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu – you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.” This evening would not have been possible without the spirit of Ubuntu on the part of so many, not least the people at AEDAS Singapore, our co-hosts as well as pro bono architects of the Emmaus Centre Project (ECP) now under construction.
