INITIAL IMPRESSIONS...

JK When the project was introduced to the class it felt very sudden and daunting at first!

LT It was our first time orchestrating an event with minimal help and supervision from our lecturers. It was liberating to be given the honour of organising the opening of our new campus - allowing us to see how our arts management skills could finally be put to the test. OFFBEAT@WINSTEDT CHALLENGES

JK We had to work together to overcome many challenges, such as last-minute changes and decisions that affected planning and stretched our timeline.

LT Three months into the planning of the event,

OFFBEAT@WINSTEDT we had to re-think the concept, but in the end we came up with an idea which was better than the one before and it got us truly motivated.

WHAT WE LEARNED

LT Fast problem solving skills was a major takeaway!

JK As a leader, I learned that you have to be responsible not only for yourself but for the people around you as well.

LT Cross-collaborations with other faculties, connecting with other faculties and students to come up with a successful programme, made things really interesting. It gave us the opportunity to reach out and understand the work of our school mates throughout the College.

18 19 Designed as a comprehensive creative centre for students’ independent studio work and research, the Winstedt Campus provides a beautiful and inspiring natural environment for artistic creativity, complementing the core lectures and teaching programme of the College at the McNally Campus.

AWARDS OFFBEAT@WINSTEDT 2014 was a banner year for LASALLE, with students, staff and alumni making waves in Singapore as well as on the world stage.

Our main campus at McNally Street is an elegant and awesome set of interconnected, high-tech glass buildings. There’s a great sense of futuristic grandeur. This new campus is quite different. It has an old-fashioned, utilitarian charm - it has a certain grit and rawness. We like that. - Professor Steve Dixon, President of LASALLE

After that, it was getting the the Gong Creative Circle Awards 2014, Singapore’s most prestigious advertising awards. ad looking right, overseeing and art directing the print shoot/video, basically making the campaign look seamless across all channels.

What was the toughest challenge you faced? Learning the ropes on the job with two other very senior creative directors. I was their hands and feet, and I had to constantly pick their brains to find out what they really wanted the ad to look and feel like. As a junior art director that was the toughest thing for me to manage. But even though it was challenging at first, we managed to make it work and became a good team throughout the entire campaign. You can say it was really teamwork and a belief in the idea that pulled us through.

What about the high point? When the idea was realised in print and in video. It’s amazing when you finally get to see the work in totality after you’ve slaved over it for months on end. It was such a huge campaign and I worked on it for so long that I inevitably felt jaded and tired at times, because it was the only

thing I was doing for ages and working late nights over. AWARDS But after your project goes out and gets 13 million views, you look back and go, “Hey that was pretty brilliant! How did we think of that again?” It really puts things back in perspective and

AWARDS reminds you that nothing is impossible with hard work and dedication.

MY TIME AT LASALLE

The most important thing LASALLE taught you was... The value of teamwork. Though school can be a competitive environment (and soon enough, you realise that work is as well), you learn to work with your peers rather than against them. That’s important in building your career because with more people by your side, you’re able to push ideas further and generate better concepts.

Advice to students... Be hungry. Work for what you want, fight for your ideas if you really believe in them. Make things happen instead of waiting around for it to hit you because it will be too late by then. Understand yourself first, then play to your strengths and improve on your weaknesses.

MA Arts & Cultural Management alumna Yuni, who is Executive Director of the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), co-producer of Ilo Ilo and co-founder of Films, was feted for her accomplishments in the Arts and Media category. The SGIFF returned from a three-year hiatus to widespread acclaim in 2014 under Yuni’s leadership. Jying Tan, a MA Fine Arts alumna, won the award for the Design category. She has exhibited at galleries and installation sites in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Turkey. She was invited to be part of the influential OH! AWARDS HIGHLIGHTS

40 President’s Artistic Vision THE WASTE LAND HIGHLIGHTS

LASALLE President Professor Steve Dixon, an award-winning actor and director whose performances have toured internationally in Europe, Asia and North and South America, dazzled audiences with his first ever show in Singapore. In his 50 minute solo performance, T.S. Eliot’s poetic tour de force The Waste Land was dramatically brought to life through a fusion of live theatre, film projection, and a mesmeric original sound design by Singaporean composer and NAC Young Artist Award winner Joyce Koh.

“I have long wanted to present the poem in a theatrical form, and travelling in over the past two years finally provided the inspiration,” said Professor Dixon.

“The vivid landscapes, cultural traditions and images I’ve encountered have ignited surprising connections and counterpoints to the poem’s ideas.”

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS TO DEVELOP ARTS EDUCATION IN HIGHLIGHTS SINGAPORE LASALLE’s newest postgraduate programme, the MA Artist Educator, was launched in June 2014. It was created in response to the needs of practicing artists in Singapore who spend a portion of their creative time in the classroom. The programme is unique in Southeast Asia, and one of only a few in the world. Programme Leader, Dr Kie Watkins, said: “Artist Educators continually reinvent their connections to their students as well as to the community in which they work. The MA Artist Educator programme helps to strengthen these connections by creating a multidisciplinary space for members to learn and grow together while investigating their own practice as well as the practice of others through research and practical application of current pedagogical thought in the arts.” “The greatest difference in myself from the MA Artist Educator programme is a change in my thinking,” said student and independent drama artist Peggy Ferroa, President, Singapore Drama Educators Association. “On a professional level, learning LAUNCH OF NEW BOOK and co-creating with educators from different art forms makes me question how I can teach better, be more productive in ON CULTURAL POLICY administrative work, and how I can open up new dimensions in my own art practice. ARTS SINGAPOREARTS CONTEMPORARY OF INSTITUTE A YEAR OF NEW THINKING

2014 was a year of new thinking at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore. Under the directorship of Bala Starr, appointed at the end of 2013, the institute produced diverse events, five publications and 36 exhibitions, culminating in the LASALLE 30th anniversary exhibition Modern Love, opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in November. Behind the scenes, resources were directed towards increasing curatorial capabilities, improving technical skill levels, and building industry networks. We achieved a major redesign of the basement galleries, and renovated the gallery architecture across all seven discrete exhibition spaces. New curatorial appointments were set in motion, and important new exhibition partnerships established with the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, key international relationships that add dimension to the ICA Singapore. In August, the institute presented sculpture, drawings, film and performance by Zai Kuning at the annual Asian Arts Space

Network (AASN) exhibition, this year held in Gwangju, South Korea. INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS SINGAPORE

In 2014 the ICA Singapore developed the means to target the broadest capacity of international contemporary art and curatorial practice along with high standards of exhibition presentation. The three upgraded basement galleries functioned from mid-year as a single large impressive space, offering flexibility and higher spaces, exchanging know-how and information, and observing varied visibility. From August 2014, the programme was separated into two installation methods and processes. strategic strands: major contemporary exhibitions in the lower- level galleries, and curriculum-related, individual and collaborative Among several strategic exhibitions in the year’s programme, projects developed with LASALLE faculty staff and students on level SOUND: Latitudes and Attitudes presented a critical overview of one.
