The fauna of Acalyptrate families Trixoscelididae, Chyromyidae and Sphaeroceridae (Diptera) in the Gemer area (Central Slovakia): supplement 2. – Čas. Slez. Muz. Opava (A), 62: 155-172, 2013.

Abstract: In the second supplement to the fauna of the Diptera Acalyptrata of the Gemer area (Slovakia) new records from the Muránska planina National Park are given. Based on the material examined, records of 2 of Trixoscelididae, 1 species of Chyromyidae and 68 species of Sphaeroceridae are presented, with comments about their general distribution, biology, faunistic and/or nature conservation importance. Chyromya miladae Andersson, 1976 (Chyromyidae) and six species of Sphaeroceridae, viz. uncinatus (Duda, 1923), B. vitripennis (Meigen, 1830), Norrbomia hispanica (Duda, 1923), N. somogyii (Papp, 1973), oldenbergi (Duda, 1918) and (Svarciella) guestphalica (Duda, 1918), are new additions to the fauna of the Gemer area; 31 other species of Sphaeroceridae are added to the fauna of the Muránska planina NP. All these seven faunal additions belong to significant species in the area due to their association with threatened habitats, general rarity or because occurring on new limits of areas of their distribution.

Introduction

Of the three families treated in this further contribution to the dipterous fauna of the Gemer area only one, the Sphaeroceridae, has been dealt with recently by Roháček (2011), while the synopsis of the Trixoscelididae and Chyromyidae of this territory is presented here for the first time. Because the additional field research performed in the Muránska planina National Park in 2012-2013 revealed a number species formerly (for history of research of Sphaeroceridae in the region see Roháček 2011) unrecorded, not only in the latter national park but also the whole of the Gemer area, the faunal results are presented below to update the inventory of the biodiversity of these groups in the regions under study. While the species richness of Sphaeroceridae in the entire Gemer territory was already considered to be relatively high by Roháček (2011), the biodiversity of this in the Muránska planina NP has hitherto not been satisfactorily studied. The same is also true for Trixoscelididae and Chyromyidae which were, however, under investigated not only in the three national parks forming the Gemer area but also in the whole of Slovakia. Consequently, the results presented here form not only a supplement to the study by Roháček (2011) but also give information about two additional families previously not or only partly studied in this part of Slovakia. This additional study on the three Heleomyzoid families belongs to a series of papers devoted to Diptera of the Gemer area (cf. Ševčík & Kurina 2011a,b; Roháček & Ševčík 2011; Roháček 2011, 2012b,c, 2013; Černý 2012; Ševčík 2011, 2012; Rudzinski & Ševčík 2012).

Material and methods

The account of species of Trixoscelididae, Chyromyidae and Sphaeroceridae recorded below from the Gemer area is exclusively based on material obtained during fieldwork performed in the Muránska planina NP in 2012-2013 by J. Roháček, J. Ševčík, D. Kaspřák and M. Mantič. In 2012-2013 five Malaise traps and one emergence trap were used to collect apart from the general and individual collecting by means of sweeping and sifting methods. The precise situations of the traps in the Muránska planina NP are given below in „Study area“. All specimens were identified by the author and are deposited in SMOC = Slezské zemské muzeum, Opava, . The nomenclature used here follows the Checklist of Diptera of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, electronic version 2 (Jedlička et al. 2009), unless other sources are given. Species significant from the

155

biogeographical, ecological or nature conservation point of view are marked by “*”. Other abbreviations used in text: ET = emergence trap, MT = Malaise trap. The species from the families listed below were identified using the keys and other determination tools cited in the introductory texts to these families in the above checklist (Jedlička et al. 2009) unless mentioned otherwise. Each newly recorded species is provided with information about general distribution, biology, faunistic and/or nature conservation importance; in taxa already known from the study area these comments can be found in Roháček (2011).

Study area

The Gemer area is here understood as the territory of three national parks in central Slovakia – Muránska planina National Park (= NP), Slovenský raj NP and Slovenský kras NP. All these national parks represent well- preserved karst areas with a rich mosaic of ecosystems, where both montane and thermophilous species of and , including several endemics, occur. In the Muránska planina NP the following traps were operated: in 2012 two Malaise traps, one at the top plateau of Šiance res. (48°46'11''N, 20°04'14''E, 1000 m), the other near Muránska Lehota, in the Lehotský potok valley (48°42'58''N, 20°00'16''E, 455 m).In 2013 three Malaise traps and one emergence trap: a Malaise trap and an emergence trap in the Hrdzavá dolina res. (48°44'52''N, 20°01'04''E, 540 m), another Malaise trap on the top plateau of the Poľudnica res. (48°45'48''N, 20°01'55''E, 920 m), and the remaining Malaise trap in the upper part of the Čertova dolina res. (48°44'20''N, 19°51'27''E, 715 m).

Synopsis of species

TRIXOSCELIDIDAE

This small acalyptrate group is here treated as a family following the Fauna Europaea (Woźnica 2011a) although it has been often considered a mere tribe or of the . Altogether 26 species belonging to the sole European Trixoscelis Rondani, 1856 have been recorded in Europe and adjacent areas, as included in the Fauna Europaea (Woźnica 2011a) but only five of them are known from Slovakia (Roháček 2009a, Woźnica 2011b). Two species of Trixoscelis are known from the Gemer area, one from the Slovenský kras NP (Martinek 1986), the other from the Muránska planina NP (Woźnica 2011b). Trixoscelis species probably have saprophagous larvae; two species are known to develop in blackbird's nests. Most Trixoscelis species are distinctly thermophilous with adults occuring in warm insolated sites, particularly sandy, steppe or forest steppe habitats. The nomenclature used here follows that in the Fauna Europaea (Woźnica 2011a).

*Trixoscelis canescens (Loew, 1865) (Fig. 1) Literature: see Woźnica (2011b: Muránska planina NP: Voniaca). Material: Muránska planina NP, Poľudnica res., top plateau, MT, 9.viii.-18.ix.2013, 1♀, J. Ševčík et al. leg. Remarks: A generally rare European species, hitherto recorded from , , ?, , , , , , Czech Republic (Moravia), Slovakia, , Macedonia, , , and NW part of European species (Woźnica 2008, 2011a). The species has only recently been recorded from Slovakia (Wożnica 2011b), based on a single female swept in the Muránska planina NP. The second Slovak record (see above) also originates from this area. Based on records from the Italian Alps (Woźnica 2008) T. canescens seems to occur from submontane to subalpine situations and, consequently, the records from higher altitudes in the Muránska planina NP fall within this range. The species differs in this respect from most other members of the genus Trixoscelis (see above) which are markedly thermophilous.

Trixoscelis frontalis (Fallén, 1823) Literature: see Martinek (1986: Zádiel). Remarks: Although this widespread W. Palaearctic species is the most common representative of Trixoscelis in Central Europe and also Slovakia, there are only infrequent records from the latter country including the single one from the Gemer area originating from the Slovenský kras (Martinek 1986).

CHYROMYIDAE

This is another family related to Heleomyzidae. A total of 59 species have been recorded in Europe and adjacent island areas (Ebejer 2004), but some additional species have since been added from this region (Ebejer 2005; Gibbs 2007); only five species are known from Slovakia (Roháček 2009b). The species from the latter country have been treated faunistically by Ebejer & Roháček (1995) but no species have hitherto been recorded from the Gemer territory. The nomenclature adopted here follows that in the Fauna Europaea (Ebejer 2004). Chyromyidae have saprophagous larvae, which have been found in the nests of birds and bat guano; a few species have been reared from wood debris. The majority of species are thermophilous. Adults of many species (particularly representatives of the genera Aphaniosoma and ) inhabit semi-arid habitats and saltmarshes and occur on flowering vegetation. Some Chyromya and Gymnochiromyia species seem to be associated with warm deciduous forests.

* Chyromya miladae Andersson, 1976 (Fig. 2) Material: Muránska planina NP, Poľudnica res., top plateau, 48°45'50''N, 20°01'54''E, 960 m, sweeping undergrowth of mixed forest, 18.ix.2013, 1♀, J. Roháček leg.; same locality, MT, 9.viii.-18.ix.2013, 2♀, 18.ix.-4.x.2013, 1♀, J. Ševčík et al. leg. Remarks: A rare European species, described from southern Moravia (Czech Republic) and hitherto only reported from Great Britain, Italy: Sicily, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Slovakia (Ebejer 2004). The only Slovak record (Roháček 1987) originated from the vicinity of Bratislava (Častá-Lindavský les). The above records from Muránska planina NP represent a new easternmost distribution limit of the species. Ch. miladae is distinctly thermophilous and associated with warm (mainly oak) forests and forest-steppe habitats (Roháček 1987; Ebejer 2005); it is considered to be a vulnerable (VU) species in the Czech Republic (Roháček 2005a). It was found at a surprisingly high altitude (960 m) in the Muránska planina NP but note that the site on the Poľudnica Mt. lies on a warm south-oriented limestone outlier. All four captured females have a very distinct pattern on the apical tarsomeres (cf. Gibbs 2007: Fig. 3), which is also visible on photographed specimen (Fig. X).

SPHAEROCERIDAE

The family Sphaeroceridae belongs to the best studied families of Diptera in the Gemer area. The regional fauna of the group has recently been reviewed in detail by Roháček (2011) and, therefore, for the history of research and all related literature is to be referred to the latter paper. Sphaeroceridae are a relatively rich group of acalyptrate Diptera, comprising more than 1550 species in the World (Marshall et al. 2011) and about 260 species in Europe (Roháček 2004). In Slovakia 152 species of the family are known (Roháček 2009c) and from the Gemer area a total of 106 species have been recorded (Roháček 2011). Virtually all European species are saprophagous and their larvae develop in various decaying organic matter, viz. rotten vegetation, dung, carrion and fungal sporocarps. The adults preferentially occur in damp habitats with a supply of food-media for the larvae, often in numbers. There are also some synanthropic species living in or near human settlements and many symbovilous coprophagous species developing in dung heaps near stables or in pastures. The new material obtained in 2012-2013 in the Muránska planina NP included a number of new records for this national park and added 6 species to the Gemer fauna of Sphaeroceridae. The nomenclature used here follows that in Roháček et al. (2001) and Marshall et al. (2011)

Copromyzinae

Alloborborus pallifrons (Fallén, 1820) Literature: see Roháček (1986, 1992). Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 1♂; Muránska planina NP, Tisovec 1.8 km SW, Rejkovo, 48°40'08''N, 19°55'36''E, 400 m, sweeping over pasture meadow, 23.vi.2012, 1♂, J. Roháček leg.

158

Remarks: Although A. pallifrons was formerly recorded from the Muránska planina NP (Roháček 1992: Hrdzavá dolina) the above recent records confirmed it is the member of the local pasture fauna.

*Borborillus uncinatus (Duda, 1923) Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 4♂1♀; Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, on horse excrement in pasture meadow, 24.vi.2012, 1♂, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: A Palaearctic species restricted to the temperate and northern belt of the region. It is a very rare species in Slovakia: single specimens were recorded from only 3 localities (Kyslinky in Poľana BR, Bardejov, Ruské, see Roháček 2009d), thus hitherto unknown from the Gemer area. This also is a member of the community developing in horse and donkey dung on old pastures and is considered vulnerable (VU), both in Slovakia (Jedlička & Stloukalová 2001) and the Czech Republic (Roháček 2005b).

*Borborillus vitripennis (Meigen, 1830) Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 5♀; Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, on horse excrement in pasture meadow, 26.vii.2012, 1♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: A widespread Palaearctic species characteristic of old horse pastures. In the Czech Republic it is treated as a vulnerable (VU) species (Roháček 2005b) and, although it is more frequent in Slovakia (cf. Roháček 2009d), it seems to be also threatened in this country. First records from the Gemer area.

Copromyza equina Fallén, 1820 Literature: see Fritsch (1875), Thalhammer (1899), Roháček (1986, 1989). Material: Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, on horse excrement in pasture meadow, 24.vi.2012, 3♀, 26.vii.2012, 1♀, 4.ix.2012, 1♂, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: Although this is relatively common and subcosmopolitan coprophagous species, the above records are surprisingly the first from the Muránska planina NP (cf. Roháček 2011).

Copromyza stercoraria Fallén, 1820 Literature: see Roháček (2011). Material: Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, sweeping over pasture meadow, 24.vi.2012, 1♂; Muránska planina NP, Zlatno, Zlatnica res., 48°49'29''N, 20°05'22''E, 770 m, sweeping vegetation along brook, 26.vii.2012, 1♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: The first record of this Holarctic species from the Gemer area has been published only recently (Roháček 2011). Two additional localities from the Muránska planina NP are given above.

Lotophila atra (Meigen, 1830) Literature: see Roháček (1986, 1989, 2011). Material: Muránska planina NP, Nižná Kľaková saddle, 48°46'03''N, 19°57'46''E, 1200 m, sweeping over pasture meadow, 4.ix.2012, 2♂, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: A very common Holarctic coprophagous species, but formerly recorded from a single locality in the Muránska planina NP.

Norrbomia costalis (Zetterstedt, 1847) Literature: see Roháček (1986, 1994). Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 11♂5♀; Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, on horse excrement in pasture meadow, 24.vi.2012, 10♂4♀, 26.vii.2012, 16♂9♀, 4.ix.2012, 4♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: The species is associated with (preferably horse) dung in pastures. In the Gemer area it was formerly only known from Slovenský raj NP. First records from the Muránska planina NP.

*Norrbomia hispanica (Duda, 1923) Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 6♂5♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: This coprophagous species is restricted to the southern part of the West Palaearctic area. It is rare in Central Europe, occurring only in horse pastures in warm areas. There is only one recent record of a single male from Slovakia (Roháček 2009d: Poľana Mts-Kyslinky). The above finding (first from the Gemer area) of more specimens on donkey droppings again demonstrates the recent spreading of this thermophilous species from Hungary to the north.

*Norrbomia somogyii (Papp, 1973) Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 2♂, J. Roháček leg.

159

Remarks: A Southern Palaearctic-Oriental species rarely recorded from Central Europe. Similarly to the foregoing species it lives in horse dung in pastures and has been first recorded from Slovakia from the Poľana Biosphere Reserve (Roháček 2009d). The above record represents a new northernmost distribution limit of this thermophilous species, which may be expanding its distribution northwards due to warming of climate.

Norrbomia sordida (Zetterstedt, 1847) Literature: see Roháček (1986, 1994). Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 4♂2♀; Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, on horse excrement in pasture meadow, 24.vi.2012, 1♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: A widespread coprophagous species, known from the Holarctic but also (probably introduced) Neotropical, Oriental and Oceanian Regions. As other Norrbomia species it lives in pastures on droppings of hoofed animals (particularly horses). First records from the Muránska planina NP.

Sphaerocerinae

Ischiolepta micropyga (Duda, 1938) Literature: see Roháček (1986). Material: Muránska planina NP, Tisovec 2.8 km WSW, Hlboký jarok res., 48°40'17''N, 19°54'27''E, 500 m, sweeping undergrowth of beech forest, 23.vi.2012, 1♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: This Palaearctic species is restricted to northern and temperate belts of the region and seems to be associated with terricolous humid habitats. In the Gemer are it was formerly only recorded from the Slovenský kras NP (Roháček 1986). First record from the Muránska planina NP.

Ischiolepta nitida (Duda, 1920) Literature: see Roháček (1986). Material: Muránska planina NP, Poľudnica res., top plateau, 48°45'50''N, 20°01'54''E, 960 m, on horse excrement, 21.vi.2013, 1♂, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: Another Palaearctic, coprophagous species associated with pasture habitats. Like the foregoing species, it was previously unknown from the Muránska planina NP, being recorded from the Gemer area from a single locality in the Slovenský kras NP (Zádiel) by Roháček (1986).

Ischiolepta pusilla (Fallén, 1820) Literature: see Roháček (1986). Material: Muránska planina NP, Patina gamekeeper’s lodge, 48°47'10''N, 19°56'11''E, 800 m, on heap of cut grass, 26.vii.2012, 5♂3♀; Muránska planina NP, Zlatno E margin, 48°49'40''N, 20°05'17''E, 745 m, on heap of cut grass, 26.vii.2012, 1♂2♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: Additional localities of this common subcosmopolitan, mainly coprophagous, species.

Lotobia pallidiventris (Meigen, 1830) Literature: see Roháček (1986, 2011). Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 12♂7♀; same locality, on horse excrement, 20.vi.2013, 2♂2♀, J. Roháček leg. Remarks: The above findings confirm the occurrence of this thermophilous coprophagous species associated with pastures in the Muránska planina NP (for the only previous record see Roháček 2011).

Sphaerocera curvipes Latreille, 1805 Literature: see Roháček (1986, 2011). Material: Muránska planina NP, Pohronská Polhora 4.2 km E, Zbojská chalet, 48°44'39''N, 19°51'11''E, 735 m, on donkey dung, 5.ix.2012, 1♂; Muránska planina NP, Veľká lúka, 48°46'21''N, 20°03'41''E, 880 m, on horse excrement in pasture meadow, 24.vi.2012, 1♂, 4.ix.2012, 2♀; Muránska planina NP, Poľudnica res., top plateau, 48°45'50''N, 20°01'54''E, 960 m, on horse excrement, 21.vi.2013, 1♂, J. Roháček leg.; same locality, MT, 9.viii.-18.ix.2013, 1♂, J. Ševčík et al. leg. Remarks: Further records of this common, cosmopolitan and predominantly coprophagous species.

Discussion and conclusions

The families Trixoscelididae and Chyromyidae are represented by two and a single species respectively in the Gemer area. Of these Trixoscelis canescens and Chyromya miladae are considered important and probably threatened members of the regional dipterous communities because both are rare in Central Europe and these records from the Muránska planina NP are only the second in Slovakia. However, these two families remain under investigated in the Gemer territory; at least a few additional species of each are expected to be found there, particularly in warm forest-steppe habitats in the limestone karst of the Slovenský kras NP. On the other hand the recent review of Sphaeroceridae (Roháček 2011) included as many as 106 species in the Gemer area, which seems to demonstrate a very high diversity of Sphaeroceridae in the region. However, the above results from additional field research (2012-2013) in the Muránska planina NP clearly showed that this number is probably far from being definitive. Altogether 6 species are here added to the Sphaeroceridae fauna of the Gemer area, viz. Borborillus incinatus, B. vitripennis, Norrbomia hispanica, N. somogyii (all associated with old horse pastures), Leptocera oldenbergi and Minilimosina guestphalica (both members of communities in well-preserved submontane and montane forests), so that the current number of species of this family reached 112 in this territory. Because the majority of important species of Sphaeroceridae in the Gemer area were commented upon in the foregoing paper (Roháček 2011) it would be purposeless to repeat these facts here despite some of these species have now been recorded (for the first time) also from the Muránska planina NP. More importantly, the present study demonstrated that also in the latter national park the diversity of the local fauna is at least as rich as those in both neighbouring parks (Slovenský raj NP, Slovenský kras NP) and that it also includes rare, ecologically or biogeographically important or endangered species. A total of 37 species are added to the dipterous fauna of the Muránska planina NP which now comprises 87 species of Sphaeroceridae. Interestingly, of the six species encountered as new members of the Gemer fauna four belong to jeopardized species of the pasture communities (see above) and two (Norrbomia hispanica, N. somogyii) are thermophilous species that only recently penetrated to Slovakia (cf. Roháček 2009d), so expanding their distribution area northerly. The remaining two species, Leptocera oldenbergi and Minilimosina guestphalica, are characteristic members of undisturbed woodland communities, and L. oldenbergi also belongs to the threatened taxa in Central Europe (classified as vulnerable in the Czech Republic, see Roháček 2005b).
