ABSTRACT A theatrical portrait is an image of an actor or actors in character. This genre was widespread in eighteenth century London and was practised by a large number of painters and engravers of all levels of ability. The sources of the genre lay in a number of diverse styles of art, including the court portraits of Lely and Kneller and the fetes galantes of Watteau and Mercier. Three types of media for theatrical portraits were particularly prevalent in London, between ca745 and 1800 : painting, print and book illustration. -

Lüdtke Leibniz University Hannover This book is inspired by many years of pedagogic and therapeutic work with children and adults in preschool, school and clinical settings. The miracle of language devel- opment and the joy of expressive language on the one hand and the vulnerability of language and the sorrow and grief caused by its distortion or even loss on the other opened my eyes to the inseparability of emotion and language. Even though I had just been part of the editing team for Moving Ourselves, Moving Others: Motion and Emotion in Intersubjectivity, Consciousness and Language (2012), I felt there was a strong need for an interdisciplinary volume focusing exclusively on the enormous importance of emotion in language. -

Chapter 4 A Reconsideration of the Role of Polynesian Women in Early Encounters with Europeans: Supplement to Marshall Sahlins’ Voyage around the Islands of History Serge Tcherkézoff Europeans have been losing their way in the Pacific from the beginning when early explorers made up for navigational errors by claiming inhabited islands as new discoveries. Never mind that the islanders had simultaneously discovered the explorers, no doubt with a fair bit of despair and surprise, but since it took years for islanders to learn the tiny scratches that the visitors called writing, the European claims had a head start in the history books. (Marchand 1961, 253) Ethnohistorical work on first and subsequent early encounters between Polynesians and Europeans remained focused on particular archipelagoes, which has meant that comparative hypotheses spanning the entire Polynesian region have not emerged. Moreover, it has been conducted mainly in eastern Polynesia (including Aotearoa), thus leaving aside the western part of the region.1 In this chapter I examine early encounters in Samoa, from western Polynesia, and also reconsider the Tahitian case, from eastern Polynesia, thus building a comparison of the nature of these early encounters across the region. The focus of the chapter is the apparent sexual offers that women made to the newcomers. If we go back to a number of journals written during the early voyages which have still not been studied in as much detail as they deserve, namely La Pérouse's journal and, for Bougainville's expedition, those of Nassau and Fesche,2 we can see that a crucial aspect of these apparent sexual offers ± 113 Oceanic Encounters the ªgirls' very youngº age and their ªweepingº ± has been overlooked. -

Russia’s Empress-Navigator: Transforming Modes of Monarchy During the Reign of Anna Ivanovna, 1730-1740 Jacob Bell University of Illinois 2019 Winner of the James Madison Award for Excellence in Historical Scholarship The eighteenth century was a markedly volatile period in the history of Russia, seeing its development and international emergence as a European-styled empire. In narratives of this time of change, historians tend to view the century in two parts: the reign of Peter I (r. 1682-1725), who purportedly spurred Russia into modernization, and Catherine II (r. 1762-96), the German princess-turned-empress who presided over the culmination of Russia’s transformation. Yet, dismissal of nearly forty years of Russia’s history does a severe disservice to the sovereigns and governments that formed the process of change. Recently, Catherine Evtuhov turned her attention to investigating Russia under the rule of Elizabeth Petrovna (r. 1741-62), bolstering the conversation with a greater perspective of one of these “forgotten reigns,” but Elizabeth owed much to her post-Petrine predecessors. Specifically, Empress Anna Ivanovna (r. 1730-40) remains one of the most overlooked and underappreciated sovereigns of the interim between the “Greats.”1 Anna Ivanovna was born on February 7, 1693, the daughter of Praskovia Saltykova and Ivan V Alekseyvich (r. 1682-96), the son of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich (r. 1645-1676). When Anna was 1 Anna’s patronymic is also transliterated as Anna Ioannovna. I elected to use “Ivanovna” to closer resemble modern Russian. Arkoun on Deconstruction Dr. Usman Khalil Ms Abida Khan Abstract Ideologies are directly albeit not always perceptibly related to methodological and epistemological themes. Social psychology also reveals that knowledge depends upon the policy of rejection or incorporation of various philosophies. In the journey of human thought dawned the age of reason with the Era of Enlightenment. Gradually, universal values and the scientific method gained supremacy. And then all the grand narratives stood redundant and rejected, giving rise to the need to re-search, re-analyze, and re-think every work done thus far with the aim to de-construct the now-discarded. This research studies the greatly admired post structural theory of deconstruction and its proponents in the Muslim civilizations to evaluate its impact on contemporary Muslim thought. The rationale of the study is a critical appraisal of the theoretical concepts in the Muslim world in response or reaction to the current epistemological influences from the West. This exploration led to the conclusion that the scholars of the Islamic world missed the point by going a bit too far as the Holy Quran and collections of authentic Ahadith explicitly state what Muslims should reject or incorporate. The remedy comprises in updating the conventional way of thinking and interpreting things, acquiring the ability to think the unthinkable and the previously unthought, honest hard word, incessant striving for excellence, as well as discarding getting overwhelmed by whatever gains ‘currency’ in the largely impulsive Western thought. 1 Is Language a Primary Modeling System?--On Jurj Lotman's Semiosphere Professor Han-liang Chang National Taiwan University Paper presented at the International Conference on Cultural Semiotics: Cultural Mechanisms, Boundaries, Identities, in observance of Jurj Lotman’s 80s Anniversary, University of Tartu Tartu, Estonia, 26 February - 2 March 2002 The well-known distinction of primary modeling system versus secondary modeling system suggested by Lotman and others (Lotman 1977) is a lasting legacy of the Ta rtu School's that has been adhered to, modified, and refuted by semioticians of culture and nature (Sebeok 1991, 1994, Sebeok and Danesi 2000).1 Adherence aside, modifications and refutations have focused on the issue whether or not language is a primary modeling system (hereinafter PMS) and, if not, what alternative can be made available to replace it. For both biosemiosis and anthroposemiosis, language can only be a secondary modeling system (hereinafter SMS) on top of the biological experience of Unwelt. As Sebeok and Danesi have recently observed: [L]anguage is, by definition, a secondary cohesive modeling system providing humans with the resources for extending primary forms ad infinitum. From a biosemiotic perspective, the language code can be defined as the cohesive system providing the modeling resources for converting what von Uexküll (1909) called 'concrete living existence' into 'active plans.' (2000: 108) Here our co-authors are reiterating Sebeok's entrenched position over the decades. He had observed in 1989, "Solely in the genus Homo have verbal signs emerged. To put it in another way, only hominids possess two mutually sustaining repertoires of signs, the zoosemiotic nonverbal, plus, superimposed, the anthroposemiotic verbal."(1991: 55). -

The study objective is the investigation of the innovative philosophic aspects of cyberspace through the lenses of the language development processes in the sphere of innovative computer technologies and digital communication. The study design is the disclosure of cyberspace as an ontology model and as a linguistic model in the template of a logosphere. The linguistic philosophy approach to the study of cyberspace allows to efficiently investigate the empirical manifestation of cyberspace ontology (space and time dimensions), the generic categories and dimensions of cyber-epistemology, to denote existential anthropocentric character of cyberspace. Philosophical foundations of the study of cyberspace as an integrated macro-and micro-entity are determined by the substantive features of inovative logosphere as a macrostructure and by the phenomenological characteristics and properties of substrate of linguistic units of innovative cyberspace logosphere. Romanov News Новости Романовых By Ludmila & Paul Kulikovsky №140 November 2019 The Order of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George - 250 years anniversary 250 years anniversary of the Imperial Military Order of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George The Order of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George, the most honourable military order in Russia, was established on December 7 (Old style November 26), 1769, by Empress Catherine the Great. Its motto was “For service and courage”. The Order of St. George was distinguished by its statute among other Russian orders as a reward for personal valour in battle, and the merits for which an officer could be awarded a prize were strictly regulated by the statute: "Neither the high breed, nor the wounds received before the enemy, give the right to be granted this order: but this is given to those who not only corrected their position in everything by oath, honour and duty, but also distinguished themselves by their special what a courageous act, or the wise, and for Our military service, gave useful advice ... This order should never be removed: for it is acquired through merit". The Order had four degrees: 1st degree. The order's badge is a white enamel cross with widening ends and a gold border along the edges. In the middle of the cross, on the medallion, there is the image of the Moscow coat of arms. On the reverse side of the medallion there is a monogram of the saint: "SG". It was weared on a ribbon from should to hip.
