ABSTRACT A theatrical portrait is an image of an actor or actors in character. This genre was widespread in eighteenth century London and was practised by a large number of painters and engravers of all levels of ability. The sources of the genre lay in a number of diverse styles of art, including the court portraits of Lely and Kneller and the fetes galantes of Watteau and Mercier. Three types of media for theatrical portraits were particularly prevalent in London, between ca745 and 1800 : painting, print and book illustration. -

The Eclectic Careers of Eva and Juliette Gauthier Anita Slominska
Interpreting success and failure: The eclectic careers of Eva and Juliette Gauthier Anita Slominska Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal April 2009 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ©2009 Anita Slominska Abstract My dissertation explores the eclectic singing careers of sisters Eva and Juliette Gauthier. Born in Ottawa, Eva and Juliettte were aided in their musical aspirations by the patronage of Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier and his wife Lady Zoë. They both received classical vocal training in Europe. Eva spent four years in Java. She studied the local music, which later became incorporated into her concert repertoire in North America. She went on to become a leading interpreter of modern art song. Juliette became a performer of Canadian folk music in Canada, the United States and Europe, aiming to reproduce folk music “realistically” in a concert setting. My dissertation is the result of examining archival materials pertaining to their careers, combined with research into the various social and cultural worlds they traversed. Eva and Juliette’s careers are revealing of a period of transition in the arts and in social experience more generally. These transitions are related to the exploitation of non-Western people, uses of the “folk,” and the emergence of a cultural marketplace that was defined by a mixture of highbrow institutions and mass culture industries. My methodology draws from the sociology of art and cultural history, transposing Eva and Juliette Gauthier against the backdrop of the social, cultural and economic conditions that shaped their career trajectories and made them possible. -

Oceanic Encounters
Chapter 4 A Reconsideration of the Role of Polynesian Women in Early Encounters with Europeans: Supplement to Marshall Sahlins’ Voyage around the Islands of History Serge Tcherkézoff Europeans have been losing their way in the Pacific from the beginning when early explorers made up for navigational errors by claiming inhabited islands as new discoveries. Never mind that the islanders had simultaneously discovered the explorers, no doubt with a fair bit of despair and surprise, but since it took years for islanders to learn the tiny scratches that the visitors called writing, the European claims had a head start in the history books. (Aiavao 1994) Je n'ai jamais pu concevoir comment et de quel droit une nation policée pouvait s'emparer d'une terre habitée sans consentement de ses habitants. (Marchand 1961, 253) Ethnohistorical work on first and subsequent early encounters between Polynesians and Europeans remained focused on particular archipelagoes, which has meant that comparative hypotheses spanning the entire Polynesian region have not emerged. Moreover, it has been conducted mainly in eastern Polynesia (including Aotearoa), thus leaving aside the western part of the region.1 In this chapter I examine early encounters in Samoa, from western Polynesia, and also reconsider the Tahitian case, from eastern Polynesia, thus building a comparison of the nature of these early encounters across the region. The focus of the chapter is the apparent sexual offers that women made to the newcomers. If we go back to a number of journals written during the early voyages which have still not been studied in as much detail as they deserve, namely La Pérouse's journal and, for Bougainville's expedition, those of Nassau and Fesche,2 we can see that a crucial aspect of these apparent sexual offers ± 113 Oceanic Encounters the ªgirls' very youngº age and their ªweepingº ± has been overlooked. -

(With these exceptions: the 1891 set Trois Poèmes de Verlaine could not be included for lack of space; the 1903 Cinq Poèmes de Charles Baudelaire Dans le jardin has been inserted in its place.) 5 Le balcon [7:41] the vocal writing in these songs varies, but in most of them there is the emphasis on the middle 6 harmonie du soir [4:23] and low range characteristic of much French vocal music. Therefore every downward transposition 7 Le jet d’eau [5:55] has the effect of thickening the texture and darkening the color Debussy had in mind. -

2016 – 2017 Season Marks Les Talens Lyriques' 25Th Anniversary
2016 – 2017 season marks Les Talens Lyriques’ 25th anniversary Operas by Purcell, Cavalli, Charpentier, Salieri, Mozart, Handel & Monteverdi Culminating in his debut at London’s Royal Opera House for Mozart’s Mitridate in June next year, Christophe Rousset embarks on a rich season of opera with Les Talens Lyriques - from Purcell, Cavalli, Handel, Monteverdi and Mozart to forgotten masterpieces by Charpentier, Salieri and Pergolesi, to mark their 25th anniversary. From Israel to Italy, Spain to Lithuania, Rousset’s infectious enthusiasm for the baroque is in high demand. With Les Talens Lyriques at the Theater an der Wien, Rousset presents the modern premiere of Salieri’s Les Horaces in concert in October (also Versailles) and a new production of Purcell’s Fairy Queen by Mariame Clément in January. Further new productions include Pergolesi’s San Guglielmo d’Aquitania by Francesco Nappa in Iesi, Italy, Mozart’s Magic Flute in Dijon in a direction by David Lescot and Cavalli’s Calisto in Strasburg directed by Mariame Clement, following their success in Rameau’s Platée and Castor & Pollux six years ago. The revival of Pierre Audi’s Monteverdi Madrigals in Amsterdam continues to Brighton Festival as part of Les Talens Lyriques’ multiple visits to the UK this season. The season opens with an Italian tour to Pergolesi’s birthplace in Jesi for a new production of his oratorio San Guglielmo, Duca d’Aquitania, a quasi-opera replete with comic monk to be staged by Francesco Nappa on 9 and 11 September. Rousset also conducts Pergolesi’s masterpiece Stabat Mater coupled with Leo’s Salve Regina on 10 September at the Pergolesi Spontini Festival in Jesi.
